Wedding Woes

Work from home Wednesday

It’s Wednesday and I’m still working from home. It’s not bad, I could probably get used to this. The dog is snuggled up next to me while I write a guide on best practices. Way better than if I was at the office writing these.

I’m supposed to go to a networking event tonight but I think I’m going to skip. I’ve slept really poorly the last three nights and it’s getting to me.

Hows everyone else doing today?

Re: Work from home Wednesday

  • I'm at work but our institution has said no large group meetings/trainings are to be held in person.  So I'm currently on a video conference from my desk.  Also cancelled all work travel so I'm glad all my travel happened earlier in the year.

    Otherwise, SSDD.

  • Did anyone watch The Bachelor finale?? Holy hell. It really was the most dramatic.

I'm frustrated and angry and tired and cranky today. It's not a fun time to head a purchasing department when  your company sells gloves, and soap, and sanitizer and masks. Everyone is demanding things and it's extremely stressful. Also, all of our container loads of products are delayed, so 80% of our products are going to be affected too. It's just super stressful and it's going to go on for a long time.

My MIL is flying in this weekend is already driving me nuts, saying that she's so scared of the virus. Um, stay home then? GAH.
  • I'm here and looking forward to yoga class tonight.  Even though I stretched and used biofreeze after working at my mom's house over the weekend, I could use the deeper stretches my teacher puts us in!

I paid the remaining balance on our airfare to Ireland this morning and I also booked our Galway hotel yesterday.  I'm kicking myself because the Galway hotel was now more expensive than when I first looked.  One more hotel to be booked, in Belfast, and then we will be set on that front too.  I may switch around some reservations, to do a pre-paid one, so that we don't end up paying for all hotel stays while on our trip.  I'm spreading out the cost of this trip, since we don't usually have to pay for accommodations!  Our timeshare usually takes care of that!

Damn, all the wine for you this week.

I heard an NPR interview with the head of a company that makes masks talking about just how hard it is to ramp up production. That the machines can cost half a million dollars and take weeks/months to order, deliver, & train folks on them. And how they ramped up during SARS and almost went out of business because the demand evaporated almost overnight.

When is your trip? Sounds lovely!
  • Nothing eventful happening on my end today.  Work is quiet, life is quiet.  Picking up a prescription tonight, and that's my plans for the evening.

@OliveOilsMom I'm waiting to book one of the hotels for my trip, and I'm slightly worried that it will go up in price by the time I'm ready to book.  It sucks when that happens!  But, I'm not quiet ready to book - we are still debating how long we are staying in the one city, so that might change the dates I need.

It’s possible my old company is your manufacturer. I called my old boss a few weeks back on the off chance she might have some stock left. Our clinic is all out of masks. There aren’t any masks to be had. Our factories are under armed guards and all masks manufactured overseas are staying there.

  • Not too much happening over here. Debating whether or not to gym or take a rest day. I’m sore but I think I’d rather rest tomorrow when it’s raining out. We’ll see. I’m a little over my lunches for the week. Three more days and then I can switch it up.

  • Weinstein got 23 years.  And CA hasn't even gotten to him yet.

It WFH every day for me. Hee.   I'd definitely skip your event if you're not feeling great.  I hope you get some rest!

We've had our Scouts events canceled for this week because the town next to us that closed schools also closed all the parks.  We were supposed to go on a hike. I'd rather stay home and watch Masked Singer.

With all these universities going to online classes, I wonder if they're encouraging students to leave the dorms or not come back from break?  I haven't seen that explicitly stated, but you'd think so?  My brain is fried from pandemic news.

It's possible! Actually the masks and other things like lab coats are manufactured in the town in China where this supposedly all started. I just found that out Monday.
  • Yep!  I'm also on the "waiting to book my hotel" bandwagon for my cruise in May.  Though, I suppose as long as it has a cancellation policy, there wouldn't be any harm in doing it now.  I guess I just feel like there is such a good chance I'm going to have to postpone it or totally change it up to be a land vacation (if Delta won't do anything about my flight), so I don't even want to bother at this point.

I did find out from Norwegian that, because my trip was through Harrah's (so to speak), the "future credit" does work differently for me than their typical customer.  A typical customer can cancel their cruise and have the credit sitting there to use at an undetermined later date.  However, I would need to re-book the cruise within 24 hours of cancelling it...I'd just do it all at the same time...and it also needs to be a cruise for the same itinerary.  Not as convenient, but it was definitely a sigh of relief to know I won't miss out on my major gift!

Delta's current policy is "screw you and your non-refundable flight" lol, unless you are flying before April 30th.  Which was previously March 31st and recently pushed out further to April 30th.  My flight is May 7th.  So there is probably a good chance it will be pushed out again, if things remain the same or worsen.

I know I need to just stop worrying about it!  There's nothing to decide right now and won't be until I get more toward the end of April.  But argh!  I hate the uncertainty!

Back to day-to-day life, lol.  I hate where my work moved me.  It's SO cold and uncomfortable where I sit and today is even chillier than normal.  It's a beautiful, perfect temperature day outside.  Didn't need to wear a jacket.  Until I got to my desk.  And then I put a jacket and my fingerless gloves on.  Pretty sad!

There's a big 2-hour "all hands" meeting about a fairly new, huge project going on.  It starts at lunch time, so at least they are feeding us.  After work, I'm going to an industry dinner.  Fed again, lol!  This will be my first meeting.  I'm thinking about becoming a member (supply chain management).  Not so much related to the industry I work in, but related to my job.

  • Lol, I just realized the irony.  Some of you all are being encouraged to WFH with your jobs.

But my job?  Let's cram over 100+ people into one room for a 2-hour meeting.  To be fair, it's not mandatory.  However, I don't want miss out on info.

  • In re: Ireland - We fly out on May 19th and return on June 2nd!  I've already got plans to see my three friends and their families - so that is an extra bonus for me!

Kerbohl - If you can book it as a refundable rate, I would do that.  You can always cancel later on and rebook.  I am going to try and get the cheaper prepaid rate on two of the hotels I booked already, once our credit card closes for the month.

MrsConn - I'm so glad that he got the max, though sad that the jury did not believe Annabella Sciorra's testimony to give him a guilty verdict on the most serious charge.  I hope his appeals fizzle out quickly and he rots in jail.
  • Confirmed case in my city as of today.
The guy is 40 and recently traveled to Austria, mild symptoms and he's self-quarantined

M and I are still in process of decluttering, but I have dumped a bag of papers for shredding at work, bag 3 for donation is full and bag 4 is in process. There's quite a few things M will have to sort, but it's a small bag right now. I wish I could just toss it all ...
I'm also hoping M will go thru his books and be critical about them. I'm hoping to donate a bunch of books but only when I can buy them on kobo.

BabyKitten has been in a real toddler phase of eating. Couple days of minimal eating, then M and I decide "okay if she's not hungry, we'll supplement with some yogurt." That night, she eats a lot.
    WTF CHILD!

Anyways, I think we're going to introduce a blanket to BabyKitten. She has 2 stuffies she likes but is in love with soft blankets. She made me wrap her in one while getting bottle for bed.
    {yes she's almost 2 and still has bed/nap bottle. My plan is when she's off daycare we'll be doing nap/bed without. We need to do it when she's home}
  • Ireland was an amazing trip.  I think I went around that time too @OliveOilsMom, it was the perfect time to do that.

just got done with a busy work project and my eyes are cross eyed. I can’t believe it’s ONLY Wednesday.

  • I've been a day ahead all week. I really thought today was Thursday. Nothing much here. Had brunch with friends then came home to organized our new shelves. Tonight I'm taking dinner to a friend. Her dad is dying and I need to go say goodbye. They are really close family friends. It has been a rough road for her.

We are waiting to see if our trip to Switzerland/Italy is canceled this summer. H said he thinks there is a good chance it will be canceled. That would be a huge bummer. We are going to SC in a few weeks but are driving. I don't know if DD and family will come since they are flying. I will be disappointed but certainly would understand if they make that decision. I signed up for the CDC newsletter yesterday because I'm sick and tired of the panic on the media and conflicting opinions from experts. I have a science background as does H. I understand the need to contain the virus but really think this is an uncalled for panic. Most people recover from this virus so it isn't like we are all going to die if we get it. Yes the elderly and immunosuppressed are at risk. That is why we all need to be careful about touching, covering our mouths when coughing, noses when sneezing and washing hands religiously. OK I'm off my soap box.

My alma mater canceled class for the rest of the semester. Students are to return to their homes and will complete classes on line.
  • @ILoveBeachMusic, University of New Orleans (UNO) just announced the same thing.  Classes will be online only for the rest of the semester.

I also don't get the advice to have two weeks worth of "shelf stable" products in your house.  I'm not laughing at the advice for people to be prepared if they get sick and to have food supplies ready, if they want to/need to self-quarantine.  But does the coronavirus attack electrical grids also, lol?  I'll still have electricity for my freezer, right?  Right.  So, shouldn't people stock their freezer/fridge also?

Because, let me tell ya.  I have on two different occasions needed to live off of shelf-stable, packaged crap food for almost an entire week because storms knocked the electricity out.  Eating the same few things gets really old.  Really fast.   I can't even look at you anymore, Starfish tuna, lol.

  • I probably had enough food for potential quarantine before I stocked up, but I still went and got stuff.  But I don't get the hoarding toilet paper.  this coming from someone who had a year supply of toilet paper at one time!  But that wasn't me, that was hubby who bought it.  Goodness, I remember it being at least a year after we married before I had to buy toilet paper and canned beans.
Though i have to admit, when I first lived on my own I was a bit of a food hoarder too, so maybe it wasn't just my hubby.  I always had so much stuff in the freezer ... I remember having to move back to Canada in four days and having about two weeks worth of chicken that I had to get rid of.  I was so sick of chicken after that.

I agree that most people won’t die from it, but you can still be a carrier to folks who may get very sick from the virus. One of the few things that’s been shown to reduce spread (and flatten the curve) is by limiting contact with large groups of people.

I’m not someone who is regularly immunocompromised, but both my primary care physician and my OB/GYN have both told me in the last week that since we don’t know how this will impact pregnant people, but assuming it’s similar to SARS/the flu it’s likely to have a more significant impact I need to be even more careful than the general public. I’ll take all the help from businesses/campuses trying to reduce the spread if it helps me stay safe.

Right! I agree we need to be careful and considerate so the people who will suffer the most hopefully won't have to, but to think this virus is going to kill so many more people than other viruses is not supported. That's the kind of thinking I'm seeing on FB and some news outlets. Follow recommended guidelines, don't hoard and/or take advantage of short supplies (i.e. reselling items at inflated prices), and I truly think we will be fine.

Great. *Eye roll* now everyone will just fly to Dubai and then fly from here.

I was thinking that, or fly from Europe to Canada and then Canada to the US. Still ways around it for sure.

That actually sounds like a better plan, lol.
  • I also read that US Citizens can still fly from those countries, so it is just closed for non citizens? I thought it was all flights but then I saw clarification this morning though I didn't read it all

My ILs are planning to go to Ireland at the beginning of May! They're really excited. FIL is very Irish and MIL has "adopted" the enthusiasm for her last name. However, FIL is a CPA - so if tax deadline gets pushed, that will absolutely affect the trip.

I'm personally very concerned about spreading the virus myself. I'm not super concerned for my health, but I am worried for said ILs and DH's grandfather. So that's where my quarantine preparations come in. I'm also - thinking worst case scenario in the short term here - buying formula. DS is breastfed, and is supposed to be on that exclusively for at least another month (and will still need a lot after that, of course). So I'm buying some formula in case someone asks me to isolate myself from him. Which would suck, and I don't expect it to happen. But I see it as a possible worst case.

"Work from home Wednesday" is just my normal Wednesday, though. :)

Yes, from what I saw DHS clarified that US citizens and residents can still fly from to the US Europe but not non-citizens.

I read an interesting article that talked about the psychology behind that.  When people are worried about something that is out of their control, they are more likely to do things that are in their control.  Toilet paper fulfills a basic need and often comes in a large package.  So it subconsciously feels like doing something major to take back control.

Plus, we as human beings are hardwired to copy other people.  Which, from a survival standpoint, is one of the keys to our success as a species.  But, like anything else, sometimes that compulsion doesn't make sense when the "crowd" is being illogical.  So, when the media keeps showing us pictures of empty store shelves and people buying up toilet paper, it plants the seed that we should also be buying up toilet paper because that's what everyone else is doing.

  • S+S I agree on the copying. Like I had some hand sanitzer wipes I always have in my purse but then it's like crap they're out everywhere so I went to 3 stores to find any packs just so I can have some and then bought more than I otherwise would have bc I figure next time I need them again I might not find them for a while
