Marriage license?

Can I get married without a marriage license? All of the courthouses marriage license departments are closed.

I would say no.  There was a question on the news the other day asking about people going through a divorce during these times.  The expert said that forms could be filled online to get the process going and on the books despite the courts being closed.  I would assume marriages are the same?  Online?

come back Monday, people working with the law can probably help you better.

  • Your marriage won't be legal without a license. It is literally the signing of the license with witnesses, and not the actual ceremony, that makes the marriage legal.

Is there a way to get your license online?

    Nope.
  • No, you can't get married without a license.

Check your local county clerk's website. In my state, all the courts are closed to the public for the majority of things, but there is online filing and filings accepted by mail for things that normally have to be done in person. I saw specifically that marriage licenses are available by mail. The clerks are primarily WFH, but there is a skeleton staff in the courthouse for the things that can't be cancelled and for processing mail. You may also try calling. Staff is stretched and may not be answering all the calls, but it's worth a shot.
  • Thanks so much. I did reach out to the clerk via email since their office is closed. She said they are not providing licenses at this time.
