Wedding Woes

Fri-yay

I'm saying Fri-yay...weekends still feel like a nice reprieve from weekdays.  Does anyone have any nice(ish) weekend plans?  I'm trying some new recipes tomorrow (a chickpea stew and a coconut pecan cake).  It's supposed to get out of the 50s on Sunday and be sunny, so I think I'm going to have a big gardening/planting day.
I'm stressed about Trump allowing governors to call their own shots...May 1st is too soon.  I also had a panic nightmare that if/when this pandemic passes Trump convinces his sheep that it's thanks to him and he gets re-elected in November.

Re: Fri-yay

  • I'm annoyed at myself, I had a Walmart grocery pickup slot for Saturday but decided to wait since I didn't think we needed a ton. Now we're out of everything and i have one for Monday but I don't think we will make it until then with a lot of what we need.

I think H was going to go to Sam's club today for some stuff anyway so hopefully he can grab some basics to make it to Monday. I'm liking grocery pickup although it is a gamble since you don't know for sure if something will be available so if you see it somewhere else you need to grab just in case. We normally get ground beef at Sam'sbut they've been out (and so has WM pickup) but I snagged some in my grocery order for Monday but no guarantee it won't cancel so he's going to look at Sam's too. Might end up with 10 lbs but that's ok haha
  • @charlotte989875 and @ei34 CT is still closed until May 20th.   If our governors are coordinating then I have to believe the very earliest NY would reopen is the 20th.

We are in NL County and are not hit nearly as bad as the rest of the state but the incidents are increasing.  I'm nervous that people like my FIL will read "it's hit peak in NYC" to mean that it's time to get out.   He can't sit still.   It's psychologically problematic for him and I get it - but I think he wants to find any source that says it's OK to open and right now, those are going to be people who make this political and who make it about the economy because they're going to speculate on economic loss and suicides vs. the actual projections of who can be infected, hospitalized and killed.

We're really low on produce and sugar.  I think DH is going to do a Costco run on Monday and we need to prioritize what to get.   I may actually recipe plan so I can format what I can use with the ground beef and chicken that we have while he gets other items that won't use our occupied freezer space.

Note: I HIGHLY recommend the America's Test Kitchen recipe for pasta e ceci.   A double batch lasts days, uses 4 cans of chick peas, one can of whole tomatoes, and additional aromatics including 2 anchovy filets.  It's a good pantry recipe.

This is what I’m afraid of, too with my Mom in particular (but also just people in general). Just because it has hit peak downstate doesn’t mean it’s safe here!
  • Definitely a Fri-yay here, as BabyKitten returns to daycare next week. Meaning I can get work done and stop watching Wiggles lmao

Next Friday is going to be hard. It's the anniversary of my dad's passing and I cannot spend it with my mum :( I can feel that chest/stomach clench even typing that.
My current plan is to really clean the house. Keep myself busy but also active.

This is really gonna suck :(

I think stress is affecting my body. I've definitely got break outs because of it, but also my back is hurting. Kind of the same area as when pregnant, but at least now I can kinda stretch it out easier. I'm gonna get M to try and relieve some pressure and see if maybe there's a knot?
I know when this is eased up a bit I'm getting a haircut and massage lol
  • Ugh.  My stress levels are so high.  I know it's bad because I've got canker sores and my jaw hurts because I'm sure I'm clenching/grinding at night.

My hair is really starting to show a lack of upkeep.  I need a cut and color so badly.  It's growing like crazy, so my roots are the worst they've ever been.

My sisters and I are dividing an conquering helping dad with mom this weekend.  My aunt is going home for the weekend and coming back on Monday.  We're trying to find a nurse service that will be there more often to help dad.  My grandpa (mom's dad) is coming soon.  If mom's not fully in hospice in the next week or so, I'll be surprised.  It sounds like supportive measures aren't doing anything for her any longer.

I'm dreading the weekend, mainly on an emotional level.  I'm going over tomorrow between when my younger sister leaves and older sis comes to stay.  I'm staying there overnight on Sunday.  I took Monday off work.  I also need to squeeze in grocery shopping and making a menu for the next week or so.

The cloudy, rainy day is matching my mood.
  • I'm looking forward to the weekend. I've had a little zoom fatigue, so I skipped out on our regular and recurring meetings this weekend. I'm looking forward to getting off work tonight and doing what we want on our schedule instead of rushing to be ready for something by a certain time.

It's warming up a little today, but it's supposed to rain most of the weekend. The grass really needs to be cut again; I'm hoping the rain holds off long enough for me to get it done tomorrow.

I ordered some wine racks so that I can make a wine cellar in a closet in the basement. It came in yesterday, so I'm excited to assemble and get it anchored to the wall tomorrow. I've been keeping an eye out for deals on some of our favorite wines, so now I'll be able to buy a case instead of 3-4 bottles when I find deals. Oh, and I'm making french toast tomorrow. I'm pretty excited about that.
  • Nothing going on here. I received 95% of the fabric I ordered so now I am eager to finish my current one and start the new one. I almost like this quarantine time because it gives me so much time dedicated to sewing, lol.

Hugs @MissKittyDanger, make sure to do something in remembrance when we’re able to get together again.  Did he have a favorite drink?  Toast to that!
@mrsconn23, hugs to you too.  I can’t even imagine :(
@banana468, if I didn’t need fresh produce myself, I’d be ok - but I need fresh fruits and veggies!  And I killed my carb smart ice cream yesterday so probably that too. I think I’m going Sunday for another run.

Snowing here too, and it should stop around noon.  I hope it melts before I go out for a grocery run.  Tonight is game night on zoom.  I only know one person but his friends seem cool.  I feel kinda awkward not knowing anyone though.  Guess that’s how you make friends?
and then Saturday for sure I’ll try my hand at another painting.  I signed up for a virtual yaymaker but ended quitting 1/2 way through because my picture sucked (and I was on round 2 lol). I’m a quitter.

  • *hugs* @mrsconn23 and @MissKittyDanger

TGIF. The weekends are at least a time where I can try and pretend like nothing is going on. I do have to actually clean this weekend. Last weekend I put everything off in the name of self care. No regrets on that. But some stuff does need attention. I’m trying to decide between wine and margaritas for my weekend libations. Lol.

  • @CharmedPam I think my mum and I will facetime at some point during the day. Depending on if we have to go out this weekend, I may get one of his fave snacks - lemon tarts.
  • All right, now that I got my Trump rant out, lol.

I'm also really looking forward to the weekend.  Like a lot of you have talked about, my stress levels are so high all the time.  I don't mean that to be an equal comparison.  I know some of you have especially serious and weighty things going on.  But, for me, the weekend is at least a time when I don't have to worry about work, so I can mentally relax a little more.

Unfortunately, I do need to go out in the world a bit today.  I need to pick up my paycheck and then go to the bank.

Some good news, relatively speaking.  My H found a clearance washing machine at Home Depot.  It was 50% off and only $374.  He bought it and we need to go pick it up.  The only problem is, it's a top load.  Our current washer/dryer set is front load.

He told me they had a front load washer...although in red (our set is black)...also on clearance for $500.  I might want that one instead, so at least the "look" matches, even if the colors don't, lol.  I have no idea why he didn't tell me about that one in the first place (shrug).  But, whatever.  If the red front load is still there, I assume I can "return" the other one without even taking it and get the front load instead.

Or we might keep the top load one anyway and get them both.  We need appliances for our latest rehabbed unit.  I usually buy used washer/dryer sets for $300-$350.  But getting a brand new washer for only $374, with a warranty and (hopefully) will work for years to come, might be an even better idea.

  • Any reason you don’t want a top-load @short+sassy? I actually prefer my top load with an agitator to the front load ones we looked at and had better longevity reviews.
  • I found that this article was a quick read and informative.   The graph is also a decent illustration for anyone who wants to compare deaths and the death rate.   It's not about annual deaths only when you also see the spike and how it came on so quickly:

  • MrsConn - Continued hugs and prayers for your mom, you and your family.

MKD - I agree with Charmed - to do something that day, that your dad always loved.  Also, see if you can get some BioFreeze.  It can work wonders on back pain!  I just started using it, when I started at the Chiropractor a year and a half ago.

S+S - That idiot bankrupted a casino - multiple times.  I still don't know how people believe that he is a smart business person because of that.  And he has no clue what he is doing, so I'm glad he is leaving it up to the governors to reopen.  I hope your governor is taking this as seriously as mine and the other states around me are.  Those idiots up in Michigan protesting have me shaking my damn head yesterday.  Their traffic jam even prevented medical professional from getting to the hospital to work and prevented an ambulance from arriving for more than 10 minutes.

Just another day here.  I've got some billable work to do, so that's a plus.  We have a few things to do around the house this weekend, but not sure exactly what H wants to do.  I hope to be able to get my mulch today, so I can put it around this weekend.  Sunday is supposed to be beautiful!
  • I'm going to make homemade biscuits tomorrow and also a chicken pot pie type creation with the random veggies we have left, maybe some banana dessert to use the brown bananas in the fruit bowl. Trying to stretch the groceries as far as I can before we make another run.  Supposed to get a grocery order next week but they're currently out of stock on almost everything so fingers crossed.

The babe had his monthly appointment this morning and is growing and healthy!  Super tired and cranky after the shots though so lots of snuggle coming his way this afternoon.

Only because my dryer is also a front load.  Not a huge deal, but it would visually annoy me to have a dryer and washing machine that are such different styles.  It will be bad enough they're different colors, no matter which clearance washer I go with lol.

My dryer is black.  The clearance top load is white.  The clearance front load is red.

Overall, though.  I don't especially have a preference between top or front loads.  I like the front loads a little better because, especially being short, it's easier for me to "see" and reach everything.  But I'm way too cheap to ever buy new front loads, because they're typically more expensive.  And, you're right, they tend to have more problems.

We bought our current set used for $600, including both pedestals, when I bought my house 8 years ago.  I don't know how old they were when we bought them, but 8 years is pretty great for that price!  Plus, they are LGs.  At the time, the same model washers/ dryers were crazy expensive new.  I think it was something like $3K for a set, which didn't include the pedestals.  Each pedestal was another $800!  Yeesh.  I have especially never understood why pedestals are so expensive.  Sure, they're heavy duty steel (I think).  But no mechanics.  Simple design.  Not much to 'em.  I don't get it, lol.

A couple years after Hurricane Katrina, Trump had put together an investors group to turn one of the abandoned office buildings into a hotel.  He bilked tens of millions from those investors, some of them local.  Almost nothing was done and then Trump pulled out of the project.  That same building is still sitting there abandoned.  But a lot of that seed money somehow disappeared.

I feel like our governor and, specifically the NOLA mayor (who I normally don't like, lol), have been doing a pretty good job and taken things seriously, starting in about mid-March.  TBH, I thought they were being too careful, at first.  But now seeing how things have developed here locally and around the country, They weren't too cautious at all.  They made the tough calls and are still making the tough calls.

Earlier this week, our mayor extended the Stay at Home order until May 16th.  She hasn't mandated it yet, but has strongly encouraged that all festivals in 2020 be cancelled.  That's really harsh and it's heartbreaking, but probably a good call :(.

It would mean no Jazz Fest or Essence Fest this year.  Which are huge events that the city and its businesses need.   But those two festivals draw people from all over the country and the world.  We can't control how other states and countries have handled things and it could potentially cause a second wave of the virus.

    ---------------------------------

I was surprised by Michigan also.  I feel like Louisiana has been pretty mirrored with Michigan for shutdown timings taken.  But people down here have, overall, agreed with the safety measures being taken.

Ugh, here's an anecdotal example.  We have a set of tenants that we are more social/friendly with, because we've often used the H to help with the rehab we're doing.  His wife is originally from Michigan.  AFTER both these states had Stay At Home orders, her family decided this was a good time to take a vacation and visit her.

So, here they come.  From many states away.  When that's exactly what people SHOULDN'T be doing, smh!  One of their excuses was that Michigan is being too onerous and expecting people to Stay at Home.  (Gasp) And even have the audacity to ticket and fine people if they are not complying.

We mentioned to our tenant, "Uhhhh...are they aware that Louisiana, especially New Orleans, is doing exactly the same thing?" (eyeroll)

  • @OliveOilsMom I think we may have a minimal amount of BioFreeze left. Do you know if it expires? {we've had it a few years lol} I may see if M can put some on after he tries to massage my back.

From what I've seen Michigan is even marking off areas in stores so 'non essential' items cannot be purchased and there's rules about not going to your own vacation home.   On one hand it seems harsh and on the other I think she's seen what's happened in plenty of places such as out here with NYC and then NYC residents heading to LI and CT homes.  So she's in a rough situation where she has to put those measures in place and people who cannot understand them are going to fight them.

I don't like my governor but I think he's doing a good job in this situation.  No one WANTS to be quarantined but the reality is that if we're feeling good and restless it means that the measures are working.   And I do not want to belittle those who are affected.   It's awful economically.   But the answer isn't to reopen the country for economic prosperity.   The answer is to figure out how to get relief to those who need it or you'll see a constant taxing of our healthcare system AND a forced quarantine again.
  • @MissKittyDanger - Not sure if it expires!  I had my first bottle for almost a year.  But the top crimp of the bottle, should have an expiration date.
  • The first lay-off (at our location) just happened =(
