Short Week Monday

Another night of no sleep. On top of not being able to sleep to begin with - I finally JUST got to sleep and a loud popping noise came from my furnace room. This happened twice! It’s the norm for my furnace to make some tinkering and light pops but these were loud, It made me jump awake, my heart race and of course I couldn’t get back to sleep.

Friday was zoom trivia.  I brought a friend in to team up and she basically got all the answers right. I’m not saying she googled all the categories but when we got to the superbowl round she got the last ten winners in order, and I was like “did you google?” She said she knew nothing about football! She said of course!” So now I’m wondering of she googled the answers the entire time...

Saturday I did something that made me feel normal again.  A ghost investigation I bought tickets for in January that was rescheduled from May was still a go. It felt good to ghost hunt again, after really being home for so long. We did social distance as much as possible and everyone wore a mask.

Our long weekend was great.  Tiring, but we had a good time.

Friday, we went boating.  We rented a pontoon and anchored it about a half mile from the marina. We had our boat, which DH and FIL took turns taking the kids out on the tube.

Saturday, it poured on and off all day.  We had some people over for dinner.  We met our friend's new GF and really liked her.

Sunday, SIL left to go to BIL's in OH for the day.  She's now at her IL's for a couple days. We did some clean-up and then I chilled on the couch for a good part of the day.  I did more stitching while I watched "Athlete A" and started the series "Spinning Out" on Netflix.

Athlete A is really, really well done. The women who they interviewed extensively are badass heroes.  Fuck USA Gymnastics and especially Nassar.  But it ends on a hopeful note. It was also personally thrilling to see Indy featured as a backdrop for most of the film.

I also like Spinning Out. It's a drama, and pretty dark.  It's about ice skaters trying to make it to elite level and the backdrop is Sun Valley, ID.

This week is a super short week.  I'm off Weds afternoon through the weekend.  We're going camping at the family farm.

Oh and a weekend side-note, I watched DH call his family out a few different times on BLM and other social issues.  It was nice to see our private conversations play out and DH doing the work he said he planned to.

I also watched Athlete A this weekend. I thought it was really well done and I had followed the stories in the Indy Star from the beginning (I’m a huge gymnastics fan) so it was really interesting to have the journalists talk about how their coverage unfolded. But yah eff USAG for how they handled everything. They knew what was happening and did nothing to protect these young women and girls. It’s just so wrong.

OMG @charlotte989875!  Your poor SIL!   I'm so sorry for her.  That's awful.

How's your pupper?  Clearly you had a premonition about the weekend and also, pregnancy is an emotional mindfuck.

I love gymnastics too.  I did low-level competitive gymnastics as a kid and I look back at some shit that happened at that level that was kind of messed up.  I love Rachel Denhollander.  She's such a badass.  She was so direct and just like, "Nope, fuck y'all. I'm burning it down."

Thank you, it’s terrible. He was pretty young (68-69) and in really good health. Just out of nowhere.

Puppy is doing okay. He was really out of it from the sedation Saturday and pretty sleepy yesterday but today he seems back to normal.

Rachel Denhollander is amazing. I loved that she was the last person to give the impact statement at the sentencing hearing and for her to basically be like give him the Max, he deserves nothing and USAG is complicit. She was such a badass.

I also did competitive as a kid (until puberty) and seeing some of what went one; kids competing on town ligaments or stress fractures, the focus on weight at such a young age, it’s no wonder so many dangerous behaviors were allowed to persist for so long. And a lot of that was at club levels where no one was close to making an Olympic team. It sucks because it’s such a fun sport, and so much research says that the more young women do sports the higher confidence they have, the better they do in school, etc but not when shit like this happens.

Oh @charlotte989875, you'll appreciate this.  My forearms are KILLING ME because we did drunk cartwheels and round-offs Saturday night.  30+ years later, I still got it.  DH was all, "OH god, don't hurt yourself."  LMAO
    I love this so much!!

Weekend wasn’t super great. H went to camp with the dog Friday night and for some reason (pregnancy) I was super upset that he was going. I’m totally fine, there was no reason for him to stay but I was really upset.

Well he calls me Saturday mid-day (he never calls when he’s there) and says he’ll be home in 5 minutes because the dog was at the emergency vet because he bit a porcupine and needed to be sedated to have the quills removed.

Then I get a text from SIL and find out her FIL has a massive heart attack and died. There was nothing that the EMTs or hospital could do for him. It’s awful. Just a nightmare for their family.

So all in all the weekend pretty much sucked.
I'm so sorry Charlotte, thinking of you and your family.

Very slow 3 days work week for me and I am so excited.  My boss in on vacation all week so there will be very little new work coming in too.  I had thought my company was giving us this Friday for the 4th, but actually it's Monday.  I was going to take Thursday off anyway bc it's my birthday, so decided to just take Friday too and give myself a 5 day weekend since I already thought I'd be off then.

We're seeing my in-laws on Saturday for the first time not socially distanced.  Overall i genuinely enjoy spending time with them, but when we only have the annoying and negative interactions that have happened over the last few months without any of the fun stuff, it's hard to have a good attitude.

Ugh that's a lot @charlotte989875 , I'm sorry.  Hope the dog is starting to feel like itself again
@mrsconn23 I used to be a cartwheel/roundoff queen too.  Two summers ago I was thrilled to discover I "still had it".  The next morning when I woke up and EVERYthing hurt i was like "No.  No I don't" :D

EDIT  okay saw the reply Varuna...perfectly said, I hope she'll back away from her idea

Just one more thing I thought about with Athlete A, it can be very triggering.  They show videos Nassar produced about his 'methods' and also his police interview is pretty graphic with his descriptions of things he did.  The women also talked about it, but I felt thoroughly creeped out by the videos and the interview.  Thankfully, they used them sparingly.  It was still very upsetting and unsettling and I'm someone who has never experienced sexual violence in my past.

@charlotte989875 I'm sorry for an awful weekend! Sorry for your loss and I hope the pup is feeling better.

It was pretty chill here. We did go tubing on Saturday, but 30 minutes in there was a pop up thunderstorm. We didn't mind getting drenched, but when we saw a tree come down, we all flew out of the river. We had to drag all the stuff out and wait while one friend ran back and got the car. Then H and I came home and finished the contents of the cooler on the deck in the rain.

It will be a short week for me too. I decided to go to that funeral, so I'm taking half day Weds and all of Thurs bereavement. Honestly, I think I'd rather stay home and work. But I'd feel bad not going. Cousin didn't have a lot of friends and most of that side of the family is broken. I need to go for her.

@CharmedPam, I'm glad you got to go on a ghost investigation.  It's nice to do something fun and "normal" again.  My H and I dined in at a restaurant for the first time since March, on Sat.

@charlotte989875, I'm glad your all's dog is doing well.  Poor puppers, ouch!  I'm sorry to hear about your SIL's, FIL.

@Casadena, happy early birthday and a 5-day weekend sounds AWESOME!

Friday went well.  I got my slew of mystery shops completed.  Though I couldn't help but laugh at one of them.  It was an example of New Orleans logic, though I'm sure not just NOLA.  It was a fast-food place.  Big sign on the door that instructed people they needed to wear masks and have them put on before they enter.  There was one cashier and she politely called out to two different people at different times that they needed to leave and then put a mask on.  But, when I placed my order, her mask was pulled down to her chin, smh!

On Saturday, we went to a "scratch and dent" furniture/appliance store.  It is new appliances with typical warranties.  We bought two stoves for two of the rental units we have on the rehabbing duplexes.  One of the units is ready for showings and another one is almost ready.  It wasn't "insane" deals, unfortunately.  They were a little cheaper than what a basic stove would be at Home Depot, but much nicer.  One of them even has a glass top.  Totally struck out on fridges, though.  Argh!!!  However, Lowe's is having a 4th of July sale on fridges.  Their basic 18 cu. ft. one is on sale for $529.  Even a decent used fridge is typically $300, so we feel it is a good value to spend about 50% more and get something new with a warranty.  It's still just so HARSH on the wallet!  Then we did a major Costco trip.  Also harsh on the wallet, lol.

Sat. night, we went to one of our favorite restaurants for our first dine-in experience together since restaurants were shut down in mid-March.  My H had shrimp on top of grit cakes for an app and a Wagyu burger for his entrée.  I got their special $55 prix fixe lobster meal.  The three courses were a lobster/watermelon salad, mini lobster roll, and Lobster Thermidor with a strip steak.  OMG, everything was delicious!

My only complaint was the mini lobster roll was good, but not great.  The lobster in it was excellent and fresh, so that's the main part.  But it didn't have any extra "oomph" of flavor with the sauce used.  And it was too "bread heavy" because they were chintzy with the lobster meat.

Sunday was a relaxation day at home.

Ugh, I am so tired today!  I love that it is a short week.  I'm off at noon on Thurs.  But that seems so far away right now, lol.

    Happy birthday @Casadena

Weekend was okay. I spent a lot of yesterday stressed and annoyed. The house wasn’t moving along enough, I only got a walk in on Sunday and it wasn’t even a full hour, and I was just feeling generally blah. Today is going to be a rough day at work. I’m hoping this week goes by quickly. We have Friday off and I am all about a 3 day weekend.

ROBERTS BLOCKED THE LOUISIANA ABORTION LAW!  Fuck yes.
I can even give you all some background on that.

It was one of those laws that required abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a hospital.  Which is problematic because, for a doctor to have admitting privileges, they need to have so many patients per year at a hospital.  Except abortions are very low risk when done in a medical setting.  It is rare for a woman to need to be hospitalized after an abortion.  So, doctors who primarily perform abortions, aren't eligible to get admitting privileges.  Plus, hospitals are reticent to give privileges because of the social controversy.

And here is how that law would have specifically played out in Louisiana.  Every, single abortion provider in the state would have had to shut down.  Except one.  One doctor in Shreveport, in addition to providing abortion services, was also a specialist in high risk pregnancies.  So he had hospital admitting privileges because of his specialty.  Except he had gone on record to say that, if he was the only clinic left who could perform abortions, he would no longer do them for the safety of his family, his staff, and his patients.

Not to mention, Shreveport is on the far northwestern corner of the state.  A good 6-hour drive from the NOLA area, which is where something like 70% of the state's population lives.

Ugh at the bolded, but I don't blame him.  Yeah, I knew it was that ridiculous.  Also this was an already settled matter by the court (I think a similar AL or TX law was struck down a few years ago).   The fact that they allowed this case to come forward after most people assumed it was settled is annoying.  I'm glad Roberts is showing that he truly is becoming more centrist, or at least that the right has become utterly ridic on top of being incompetent in their arguments.  Also, I truly believe the justices are aware of the attacks and desired machinations of the administration vs. the desires of the people, as much as they try to act like they remain above or unaware of it in in their decision making.

My county is at 99% ICU capacity. The nurses at one of the main hospitals for my patients’ community and the general area are on strike. Which I completely agree with given how dangerous conditions have been for patients and staff (even pre-COVID they threatened to strike several times), but it’s just all awful timing. I’m ready for 2020 to stop being a gigantic dumpster fire.

We are still doing OK here in CT and I have to remind myself that we are now in a vacation town and that means we cannot be overconfident in our local travels.   Mask are a must if we're not on the boat or in the pool.

It is POURING right now.   The storms are CRAZY!

I have made it no secret that I'm pro-life and feel that many current pro-live measures are simply pro-birth.  I am not looking for a debate on abortion and do understand some of the major concerns that are posed with legislation that also does not even consult with a doctor (like the idea of trying to get a woman to keep an ectopic pregnancy or not allowing a D&C when the baby in the mother is not alive).   And now, I'm really hoping that there's a greater movement to discredit Abby Johnson who is a huge voice in the pro-life movement.   Because you cannot be a Christian and pro life and be racist.   And somehow Abby Johnson is vocally thinking she can be all 3.

Catholic Twitter has been super interesting here, and it sounds like most people with a platform who are actually Catholic (i.e. consistent pro-life ethic, you have to take care of babies, and mothers, and immigrants, and refugees, and the homeless, and the incarcerated, and not have the state kill people, etc.) are actively working to petition the bishops to stop promoting her work, and I've been supporting those efforts. Of course, she's been racist for a while, and called out on it before - it's just been made especially clear this week that she has no interest in listening and instead in doubling down.

Yes, she did this months before and it's coming up AGAIN.

And while she may have done SOME good things for the movement she cannot and should not be viewed as someone to respect when her racist statements continue to come out.

I'm not sure if you follow Catholic writer Simcha Fisher but she also detailed some of Abby's racism recently and also wrote about Abby's comments last week.  Until other organizations speak out against Abby, she's going to continue to be viewed as a good voice and it's sickening.

Yes, I really appreciate Simcha. Especially that she was clearly against the original video, but fully gave Abby a chance to defend herself, and Abby just doubled down again in the interview.

I'm not remotely into canceling people. But you HAVE to be willing to genuinely apologize and change when you do something that is publicly against Church teaching, which racism absolutely is. And until you do repent and you make it clear your views have changed (which you've been given several chances to do), you show you have a consistent ethic, and that your voice can be trusted - no matter how much good work you do, we can't give you a platform from which to shout your racism. Nope. (In short, I guess, we're out here saying the same thing.)

I hate that it's apparently not enough for other Catholic speakers, podcasters, and authors to call her out. I've seen plenty of that. The bishops have to be the ones to do it, or EWTN, or the K of C, etc. in order for it to be taken seriously. So that's why I've been putting pressure on those groups. And I'm not terribly optimistic (at least on the latter two) and it makes me angry.

    Agreed.

I remember years ago when our pastor said, "You cannot be a Christian and be a racist."  And I hope that the comments did not fall on deaf ears.  That said, I think there are too many people who bristle and fail to understand that they may actually be racist and do not want to consider it.

Yeah, so this just broke is all over my newsfeed.

There have been a few instances in small group conversations with people I know where I start out with "I'm not offended to be called a racist. I am one. I wouldn't be offended to be called a sinner, either. I am one. I just can't be complacent about it. Even if it's in small ways, those are worth dealing with." Another tack I have taken is that I would consider being called a racist, even if unjustified... small potatoes?... in terms of an injustice toward myself I'd need to be indignant over, especially vs. the injustice that is probably being faced by anyone who would call me racist.

I'm hoping that will open those folks up to the concept. Because in most of the discussions, I think they'd tend towards the "bristly" types. But I think I've also established myself as a consistent and respected voice with a lot of them, so hopefully they won't just dismiss what I say.
