Re: dj vs the ipod

  • For my brother's wedding (very small and low budget wedding) we used an ipod.  They had playlists "pre ceremony music", "ceremony music", "dinner music", then the dances.  We had a printed list of what song belonged to what and had our cousin run it, worked out pretty well (there was a cable that linked the stereo/speakers and ipod together).

  • If music and a good party are important to you, then you want a DJ who can read the crowd and adjust the music on a moment's notice.  If  music is just going to be background, then an ipod will do.
  • I think that using an Ipod is very impersonal and a DJ can read your guests expressions to see if they are bored, getting sleepy or really just hate the song that is playing - people remember the party and need a mistro to make it work.
  • Good DJs aren't sleazy or cheesy, though I've certainly seen ones who were!

If budget is a major concern, go with an iPod, but I think you're far more likely to have awkward pauses or issues with sound and flow without one. You will need some sort of MC no matter what. You'll also, unless they have a system there, have to rent speakers, which will cut into the cost savings somewhat.

  • Oooh, I like the playlists idea.  I was wondering how I was going to work out the music on the ipod for mine!
  • We have hired a dj for the reception but will be using ipod for the ceremony and cocktail hour!!! It saves us a bit of money and ceremony music is easy to put on an ipod. We are getting the day of coordinator to make sure it all goes smoothly (and that people can hear the music)

</div><div>I agree with this.  The last wedding I went to had a TERRIBLE DJ, and it definitely affected the wedding.  However, I've been to a wedding that our DJ did and they were amazing - nothing cheesy, nothing sleazy, very dignified and professional.  They kept the dance floor PACKED for 4 hours.  </div><div>
</div><div>I think an iPod would be okay, but I think there is something to be said for a professional who has experience with reading a crowd and knowing where to take the next song.  Not to mention that I'd feel bad asking a guest who would otherwise be enjoying my wedding instead to spend their time being responsible for the iPod music because I didn't want to pay someone to do it.  I don't think it's an awful idea, but if it was reasonably in the budget I'd hire a DJ.  The music a DJ plays makes or breaks the party, IMO, so if it were me I'd skip on centerpieces, flowers, favors, etc. if that is what it took to hire a good DJ.</div><div>
