First Dress Appt.

So I scheduled my first dress appt. What should I wear and should I know or bring anything before I go?  I kinda know what type of dress I want, but I am going with an open mind and willing to try on anything.

wear a strapless bra, and if you see any dresses you like in a magazine or online, it helps to take those too.

Pantyhose?  The place I went had full-length bras in many sizes to use for trying on dresses.  Since they were helping me, I felt more comfy in pantyhose.

if you are on a budget, stick to the budget and ask the salesperson to do so as well.  Nothing so heartbreaking as to find a great dress then be told it is WAY over your budget!

Wear shoes that you believe will be the same height of the ones that you will wear with your dress on your wedding day. Exact height isn't a big deal until you get to fittings, but it helps in case you are tall (like me) and need to order extra inches of length.

Take print outs with you of dresses you like (if you're doing David's Bridal they can pull the specific gowns from their inventory).  If you are thinking of wearing shapewear like Spanx on your wedding day, wear it to your appointment as well.  Try to get as close to wearing what you think you'll be wearing underneath on your wedding day, shoes included.  I'm going barefoot for the ceremony and wearing flip flops for the reception.  No it's not a beach wedding, I'm just tall and a lot more relaxed personality.  I want my feet comfy while I'm walking around to our guests.

PJS001 speaking of extra fabric, I had to laugh at all of the dresses that were waaaay to short on me while trying on barefoot (and I'm only 5'10").  Brides always complain about dresses being too long, but somehow I knew that wouldn't be a problem!  Luckily the one I bought fits perfectly and needs no alterations!

Keep an open mind.  The dress that I was in love with looked horrible on me.  The silhoutte that I liked was not a good fit for my body type.  I ended up with the complete opposite of my "dream" dress.  If I didn't keep an open mind, I'm pretty sure I would have looked super ridiculous on my wedding day.

Also, I am a huge advocate of Spanx.  It kept things where they were supposed to be.

jmkes - I am 5'11" and my friend and the bridal consultant laughed a little when I came out in my first dress and you could see my ankles. You are super lucky for not needing alterations. I don't think I have tried on a single dress that was long enough for me, lol. But it is okay, at this point in life you realize that being tall means harder to find stuff that fits!

same thing happened to me. The best dress was something I never thought I would like, but ended up loving it!
