Hotel Viking vs. Atlantic Beach Club?

I know, I know...  two totally different feels and types of venues but we can't decide between them for our wedding reception.  I've heard and read good things about both but need some help!  There are things we love about both sites - it's so hard to make a choice so any help would be greatly appreciated!! The wedding would be in early May 2011 so we like that ABC has direct ocean views but the Viking seems more elegant for an evening wedding.  We'd use the Kay Chapel for the ceremony for either reception site.

Also - how's the weather in Newport in early May???

THANK YOU!!!

I only lived in RI for the three years of my lawschool but early May was cold each year. Now, I lived in Vegas for 7 years before RI so I find most of the weather in RI to be chilly. The internet says that the average high in May in Newport is 64 but if you are getting married those first couple of weeks be prepared that it could be cooler than that especially on the water.

That being said I think the fact that the wedding is in early May would make ABC a nice spot for the wedding. The beach won't be crowded yet so you will get to take advantage of their awesome ocean view without the typical beach crowds that appear later in the summer. Assuming that the reception will start when it is still light outside,  I would probably vote for the ABC over the Hotel Viking (even though Viking is like you said very elegant). In my mind if you are having your wedding in RI you should take advantage of a venue on the water. Afterall, the ocean views are one of the most special features of the state.

I think the Hotel Viking is the most beautiful place and I'm not a big ABC fan.  So...you can guess what my vote is.   It depends how much the water views mean to you.  GL

The ABC was one of my choices.  I'm getting maried in July so the turnoff for me was lack of parking and noisy beach crowd.  I think it would be a beautiful spot for a May wedding!

I got married at the Kay Chapel and Hotel Viking 2 months ago.
I have never visited the ABC, but I can say that our wedding at the Viking was AMAZING. We had many OOT guests, and that is a main reason we chose a venue like the Viking. No, you will not have a RI water view, but that area of Newport is very beautiful and quaint and old.

I don't know if you have decided yet but my vote is with The Viking. I just got married at Kay Chapel at The Viking in October and it was amazing!!! Really far beyond our expectations!! Linda Ferguson the evert coordinator was amazing so on top of everything! We had cocktails with our whole partyin the hotel bar before our rehearsal the night before and it was so beautiful. Some of our guests stayed there including my parents. My reception was at the ABC and to sum it up it was a HUGE let down. If you want more details on that portion just let me know. Good Luck with the planning!!
