Probably stupid, usher question

I haven't been to a ton of weddings before, and I cannot remember how exactly the ushering works.  We are having about 150 people at our wedding and would like to reserve the first 2 or 3 rows for close family, but other than that we didn't want to designate where people sit (no "bride side" and "groom side").  How would the ushering work in this case?  If we have our ushers just escort people to the next available row, will that result in the first 2 or 3 seats of each row being occupied, but nothing else?  Will people scoot down the row they are seated to in order to make room for more people?  Sorry for the stupid question, I'm just trying to picture how this will work!

You are overthinking this....it happens with wedding planning ;)  So many details to worry about.

Your ushers will seat people in the rows you have designated for guests until all of the seats in that row are full.  That way, you don't have a cluster of people here and a cluster of people there.  Since they are ushering them to their seats, they are basically guiding them as to where they should be sitting.  Once the seats are full, move to the next row.

  • I am not having ushers... but I didn't think about reserving the front row for like my grandmother or Fi's parents, etc.  I guess wedding guests would know not to sit in the front row right? LOL

  • I've seen where the family is ushered, but everyone else just seats themselves. And I would suggest rope or ribbon for the reserved seating. Some people just don't get it, and it's just easier to avoid the issue from the start.

  • My son was married last year and I was ushered to my seat. But it was only the moms and grandmothers of the bride/groom that were ushered. Everyone else sat where they wanted.

I am getting marriend and having a very small wedding in October. Other than making sure the front row is reserved for our close family, I plan to let the rest of the people sit where they want.
