Weaving of the Cloth - alternative to Unity Candle

I'm searching for an alternative to the unity candle/sand idea.  We're having an outside wedding and I'm kinda over the unity candle, and I'm not crazy about the sand idea either.
I went to a wedding a couple years ago, and they did a "weaving of the cloth" ceremony.  The basics of this ceremony are 3 cords or pieces of fabric the couple braids together.  One represents God, another represents the groom, and the last one represents the bride.  I've tried looking it up online, but can't find much information about it.  
Has anyone else seen this or know anything about it?  I know the fabric representing God should be gold, but can the other two coordinate with my wedding colors?  I have an idea of how I want this to work, but I don't know enough about the tradition of this ceremony and I don't want to offend anyone by changing it.
