This seems like a situation where you can absolutely have your cake and eat it too.  Make the ceremony as romantic as you want, and you can keep the romantic garden-y feeling all through dinner with roses, candles, whatever.  When you start dancing, you could do something like red or pink toned uplighting.  If your serving alcohol, you could have a few signature cocktails with a romantic theme.

if you and your fiance aren't high enrgy people, don't have a high energy wedding!  we are pretty low key and mellow, therefore, our wedding is too.  i figure that guests who know us well should expect the kidn of reception we are having.

Personally, I'd rather go to a romatic wedding that has me reaching for tissues the whole time (from the moment i sit at the ceremony until the bride and groom leave at the end of the night!!).   And since you've always wanted a certain kind of wedding, you should do it!

This is the situation I was in, and I am totally having my cake and eating it too! ^_^  Romantic formal outdoor ceremony, then on to the party!!
