Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Stumped with wording

A few days back I posted this in the DIY forum and got amazing feedback. But now I am stuck with trying to figure out how to word this into the ceremony (like a poem or something) any ideas? Here was my old post.

I was in the car yesterday listening to the radio and the talk show host said that he went to a wedding this weekend and saw something rather unique.

Instead of the unity candle/ sand ceremony the couple each wrote each other a letter (before the wedding) and placed it is an old wine crate and each took turns hammering it shut. The crate was not to be opened until their 10 year anniversary.

I thought this sounded so different and special so I went to JoAnnes yesterday and started digging around to find the tools that I would need for this project. Then, I realized that I was getting married on a cruise and in no way could i bring a hammer and nail onto the ship.

So, I started thinking of other ideas and I think I came up with a great one. I went over to their glass bottle section and purchased 2 oil and vinegar glass bottles, a set of corks (to replace the oil and vinegar ones) 2 pieces scrapbooking paper that looks like old wood (we would write our letters on this), mother of pearl filler shells for inside the bottle as decoration, some raffia to tie around the top and 2 seashell charms (to hang from the raffia), A rubber stamp that says from this day forward, and some gold paint (to use for the stamping- this was suggested from a lady who works there because she said stamp ink would not work on glass).

What do you think?
No pictures yet, I just wanted to get some imput before I start because if it seems weird I will return everything.

Stupid knot is eating my posts.  Hopefully it'll show up again but I'll sum it up with an 'amazing idea!'

  • I love it!  Creative and personalized!  I think you and the hubby will love this idea 5-10 years down the road when you open the letters up and remember the day you wrote the letters!  Go for it!

  • Our officiant company has a similar offering in their ceremonial elements section.. you can use it as a base and then customize it (change words, take out or add sentences, etc.):

    Prior to their wedding day,
Bride and Groom wrote a love letter to one another
expressing their most intimate feelings towards each other.

In the letter they have explained what it is about the other person
    that first attracted them,
the reason why they fell in love,
their dreams for their future together, a
nd some special moments that they have shared.

These unread letters will be sealed inside a box
which will be displayed in their home
as a reminder of their love for each other.

    This romantic "Time Capsule,"
will be opened when facing a challenge within their marriage
    or on a special occasion,
and will be a lasting memory
of your commitment and love for one another.

Bride and Groom now exchange letters and place them into the box.

  • @jenn- do you know the wording you will be using? Not for the letters themselves but for the words that the officiate will use?
  • I love the idea...it perfect. As far as wording goes, tell the officant why you liked this idea so much and what it means to the both of you as a couple. Usually they can come up with the perfect wording to explain what the two of you are doing. Its there job!! Good luck.
Go to this link someone else asked the same exact question on another blog site and other put exactly what they were saying on the comments take a look...hope the link works:)

  • @Dayna... I am in tears. I can not express how grateful I am of your help. Thank you so, so much!
  • I love this idea! I just talked to my FI about it and I'm almost positive we're going to incorporate it into the ceremony. Thank you so much for posting about this on TK, I'd never heard of it before!
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • I had even seen a long time ago, on a wedding website, where the couple writes out all the things they love about each other, things they love when they are together, things they have enjoyed together. And then when/if you ever question your relationship or begin to think about quitting, that you pull out the pages, book, whatever and read it, thought it was cute. I love the idea of this. Though hopefully there is never a time you question your love.
