NWR My car

My FI got his TSGLI check and was able to help me with a down payment for a car. I'm so excited it worked out!
Here it is Volkswagen Jetta

Surprised you didn't get a Lexus.  Let me guess - it's brand new?  Lease?  Most fiscally irresponsible decision you could make on a car purchase.

Sarah, you missed the post a few weeks ago on a different board where she told everyone that any car made in the US was crap by definition, and that Lexus were the absolute supreme car and that she'd never drive anything else.

I just think Katelyn is really brand-conscious, and I don't think she's had to make many adult decisions yet on managing her finances.  Sure, she says she has jobs and what not, but she buys Coach purses and such.  If she can afford all that, great, that's her choice.  But it doesn't sound like she can, as she needed help with the downpayment.  And I think it's a bad fiscal decision to have her FI help pay a downpayment for a car that she cannot afford otherwise.  Especially as that money is coming from a bonus.

I also drive a VW, and love my car and do think they're great vehicles.  And her new car is beautiful for sure.  But the worst 'investment' is a new car - it loses so much value as soon as you drive it off the lot.  Buying pre-owned - even if it's dealership 'certified pre-owned' is a much better value.  And buying a car that you can reasonably afford without outside help is a much better fiscal decision.

And leasing is throwing away money.  It's like renting - you don't have to be responsible for upkeep and whatnot, so that's good, but you get none of your money back ever.  Personally, I will always buy cars that I can afford outright or with a very reasonable car loan.

Calindi it is used. It's a 2006. I can afford the payments each month. I cannot afford a Lexus right now but when I can I will get one because they are great cars.

Okay, then in that case, I apologize and take it back.  Your whole post about Lexus really rubbed me the wrong way - I do think you have a lot to learn, but I'm glad you're at least buying a car that's more reasonable.  A new Jetta is really expensive.

Yeah. We looked into leasing since my sister got a good deal but it wouldn't work for us. We got a good deal on this one and the down payment wasn't bad. My fiance paid it because I'm going back to work next week. I'll start getting my 3 paychecks a month again. My Arbonne stuff alone is my car payment. Trust me we sat down and talked it out and made sure it was do-able

I hate Lexus... I love Vw/Audi.
I drive an 07 Passat we bought in Germany so it's all Audi engine :)

I will warn you that it's probably your first and last vw though... They are sooo high maintenance and the moment the warentee is up, it's known as the Christmas tree (ie, all the lights go off.. check engine, gas cap, etc) for no reason. and it costs about 70-90 bucks to get an oil change haha... have fun!! :P

I agree with msjenna... I don't think I could buy used.. To me the car is just one of those things I need new. I definitely get why one would buy used, but I just couldn't. Clothes are also things that lose value big time once you wear them, but I wouldn't buy from the thrift store. I'm not a snob, I just know when to spend and when to save for ME... everyone is different though. We only pay cash for vehicles as well so that makes it a little different for our case.

yeah that is good.. but definitely a heads up... My family as follows:
Uncle:vw
Uncle:audi
Aunt:vw
Mom:audi (getting a subaru now :P)
Me: vw
We all have the same complaints.
I just spent 5g last year on an engine because of a little "oops" on the vw side. -_- BUT my car is such a smooth drive, has so much space, has been in an accident with me going less than 10 mph and the other person going 60 and side swiping and handled so incredibly well.. I feel safe in it and that's what's important.

msjenna- yeah I definitely understand the credit situation. financing through usaa is even better! Although we didn't use it (like I had mentioned before we just paid cash) .
In Response to Re: NWR My car : A brand new car isn't always the worst investment. I bought my 2011 Jetta and it came with a 7 year warranty, it covers everything. Plus a 3 year routine maintenance warranty with oil changes. I wouldn't have received the same warranties if I went with a use vehicle. My insurance was also slighty lower on the 2011 vs 2010.
Posted by msjenna519
Do you think 3 years worth of oil changes are going to cost $10-15k because that is how much you loose in a vehicle AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE OFF THE LOT. I have only had 2 vehicles my entire life, my first was used but was the same year I bought it and it only had 5k miles on it but was almost 10k cheaper than the brand new model. I still got a 5 yr warranty and the 30,000 mile warranty that comes from the manufacturer. So I got the cheaper price and guess what I never had to cash in the warrany.

What happens with someone door dings your brand new baby? H's parent's bought him a brand new ford fusion made to him, < a month someone bent in his entire door panel while trying to park. Guess what not covered under warrenty.

Last year I just a used Hyundai that is known for having the best warrant. Now I get up to 60,000 mile warranty.

No matter the deal .... its proven that buying a brand new vehicle is a poor financal decision. Its better to look for a 1 to 2 yr old car with around 10k miles.

IMO there is absolutely no reason to buy a brand new vehicle

First of all, I don't doubt that buying a brand new car is not the best financial decision due to how much they depreciate. I bought my first 2 cars (1 I still own) used. I have had so many problems with them its ridiculous. With the help of my parents and mechanic grandfather, I did my research before ever purchasing both cars, each with less than 10,000 miles at the time. I got a lot of disappointment and I probably could have spent as much money as they both cost together on a new car and still have that one today. Because of the bad experiences I have had, I'm done with used cars. I will keep the my current car until the day it dies (like the last one) or I have the financial stability to buy a new car.

Awesome car! And if you're happy then that's even better!!  My mom bought a Jetta new 2 years ago, but she said that this will be her last car so she wanted to customize everything!  She loves it!  I have an Aunt that has one and she's had it for years! like 7 or 8 I think and hasn't had any problems with it.
My mom even got a vanity plate that says "sxyjet.."  (there are some numbers but I don't remember) but I'm like really mom?! hahaha!! Such a nerd! lol jk! Love my mom!!!

As for me I have a little used taurus I paid cash for a few years ago! Haha!  It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but I love it and I've never had problems!

Anyways, congrats on the purchase and hope it's a good car to you! :

Everything Shan said. I have never and will never buy a used car, but I'm a big fan of "certified pre-owned" because it comes with all the warranties as a new car and is guaranteed by the dealership. Plus it looks new. They're usually returned leases, so someone paid the dealership through the nose for two years, was only allowed to put on 15k miles, and then I save nearly half the cost. I also buy my cars in cash whenever possible. FI likes new cars, but we've finally convinced him. My Dad and Mom are really well off, and they will never buy a brand new car. It is definitely a personal choice, and someone has to buy them new, but it won't ever be me. For what it's worth, I've had my 2005 VW Golf for four years now and the only thing that happened so far is a few lights burned out, and my horn stopped working a few weeks ago. Very reasonable for that much time, and only cost a few bucks each light and $150 for the horn. I can fix some of the lights myself - the break lights are hard to get to so it's better to pay someone. Like any brand, the dealerships will be really expensive. Try to find a good mechanic and you'll be fine.

ditto msjenna... I feel like that comment was a little irrelevant... When you get a ding in the door, you call the insurance, whether new, owned, or "certified preowned" (<-- doesn't that still mean used? just.. nicer used? and apparently with warrenty? )
Fi and I will only ever by new, but we all spend our money differently, just as we save it differently.  :o)

To be completely honest, I hate the argument about how financially dumb it is to buy new.  I LOVE my Jeep, which I bought brand new, and I don't regret the decision for a second.  It's mine and H's money and our financial choices to make, and we are perfectly happy with them.  I know there are many people out there who think buying new is a horrible decision, and that is fine.  I also think there are many ways other people spend their money that is foolish.  Regardless, it's our money and our choice, and if we want to spend foolishley in the eyes of others, then I guess just be happy you're not us.

Totally random FTL, but is your Jetta a bright blue color?  And were you at Seabolt's by Deception Pass yesterday?
