Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

which do you prefer?

I'm wondering which you would think would be better.  I'm having an old vintage hollywood (1940s) theme for our wedding.  We found this beautiful historic building that is full of great lighting, chandeliers, stain glass windows, paintings, and beautifule architecture.  My fiance' however feels its too close to budget and we would have to cut cost else where.  But I also think it would be the same because we would not have to do as much decorating and lighting differences because of how beautiful the place is.  So I 'm wondering: do you prefer a place like this where you don't have to rent as many decorations or do you prefer more blank where you have more control over decorations?

Re: which do you prefer?

  • I think the venue is one of the most important things for a wedding b/c it really sets the tone for your reception.  I chose to go with a more expensive venue for the reception and cut costs elsewhere.  It's a give and take sort of situation and comes down to what you really really want for your overall "wedding vision"

  • Go with the building. It sounds beautiful!
  • I also vote for the venue your interested in.

  • I definitely prefer a venue that doesn't require much decorating.

  • I don't care about decorations or the built-in look of reception venues, not as a guest, not as a bride. My future husband really cared about the built-in look, though.
  • First off the venue sounds gorgeous and I agree that the venue sets the entire feel of the wedding. Plus the fact that you wouldn't have to do as much decorating is just an added bonus in my opinion. Why would you want to spend all the extra time and money organizing decoration set-up, take down, etc when you can have a beautiful place like you are describing.

  • As long as the venue price doesn't cut into the food/drink/dancing budget (ie.. the stuff guests really care about) I say go for it!  I personally would just rather have a more modest venue if it meant better food or an open bar, etc.  I would rather see centerpieces scrapped entirely at the expense of everything else.

Go with the venue.  My feeling is that you'd probably spend just as much money trying to recreate the same vibe in a cheaper venue, but with a less great result.

Also, IMO venues that seem "pricier" to start with often aren't much more expensive than the "cheaper" venues in the end.  I looked into several venues, and the "cheaper" ones wanted to nickle and dime me every step of the way for an end result that was just as expensive but not nearly as nice as the country club we are having our reception at.  I think a lot of brides get sucked in by the upfront cost of the cheaper venues and don't realize how much the things they are planning on using to make the venue look nicer (chair covers, linens, uplighting, etc.) actually cost, which they wouldn't need at a nicer venue that is a little bit more money upfront.

  • I'd go with the venue you love. FI and I picked one that is not only gorgeous, but provides tables, chairs, linens, food, booze, DJ, cakes, and ceremony space.

  • It sounds beautiful! Go with the vintage style venue and you can always find ways to cut back on something else.  Make sure its what you both want though :-)

  • @aurorasenvy: I'm looking at The Grain Exchange in milwaukee!  And thank you for all your replies, ladies!  It helps me a lot!
