Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Destination wedding or local? Any opinions?

We started out planning a wedding in Punta Cana so both families could be there.. But just found out most of thegrooms  family can't attend no matter where we have it. So now we are stuck. We live in Las Vegas so no shortage of venues. But we hate the desert and really want green, tropical and water. I'm finding I can be more particular about things like flowers and decor if we have the wedding in Vegas. We have to invite more friends so that makes it much more expensive.
Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to get just what you want at Destination wedding? I already had a wedding that not what I wanted. This is my one chance to get everything I want. Any advice?

  • Skell, my husband and I are looking into the same thing, but ours is a vow renewal. When we chat with the event coordinators at these venues, they tell us their vow renewals are done the same as their packages and offerings for weddings, but we can exclude or add what we want. They act very willing to accommodate our wishes. There was one place we talked to that said we'd have to pick one of their cake styles or bring our own from an outside baker, whereas two others told us to bring them a picture of the cake we want and they'd quote us how much that would change our chosen package (but that they would make the cake we want). It would make sense that they would try to give the couple what they want if they have the ability. We don't have actual experience with this yet, so I can only advise by the attitude we've received so far.

First of all, have you actually done your research on what it will take to be legally married in Mexico? Because it's not easy from what I've heard, Americans need to provide a lot of extra documentation and have blood tests done. There is also probably a residency requirement (you need to be physically present in the district you wish to marry in for a certain number of days).

Getting married at home doesn't mean you have to have a big wedding. Sure, it would probably be easier to have a big wedding but it's not required. Don't spend more than you can afford because you feel obligated to invite people.

If you want a tropical DW I would suggest Hawaii, Florida, or PR. Depending on what you want a DW will most likely not save you that much money.  If you want to go economical you could look into a cruise wedding.

  • Have a wedding at home and go to a vacation in the location that you want - you can have a small wedding at home
