Gift ideas for young children?

I don't have too much experience around young kids, so I need help with this! BF and I would like to buy small gifts for his 3 year old neice and 1 year old nephew since he's never given them anything before (BAD UNCLE!), and because their parents invited us to stay with them at their beach house for the weekend. Thus, I need to go to Toy's R Us sometime today and find something for them. Any ideas? I'd like us to spend less than $25 per child. Thanks in advance!

    I always like to get creative gifts - things where they actually get to make something.  Then I feel like it's a toy but they're also learning something.  They have age-appropriate things at Toys R Us - just check the packaging.  The one year old is harder to get something like that but really, they're good with anything!!  If he's a boys-boy think of trucks, dinosaurs, etc.  Of course, I say all of this having no children myself, so take it with a grain of salt.  And, when in doubt, check that packaging for the ages!!

    I don't really know what is in for young children right.  I always liked to get my niece play doh or crafty things when she was that young.  A barnes and noble gift card may be a good idea too, so they can go get books instead of another toy.

    The sales people will likely know exactly what that age group/gender keep getting. Did you already go?

    Yeah, I went yesterday. BF and I wandered around for 25 minutes and had no idea what to get. There were NO sales people walking around that we could ask for help. He's going to go back tonight.
