Placenta teddy bear... not for the weak stomached people!

What do you guys think about this? I came across this from one of my podcasts.

Don't look if you are eating or are grossed out easily. It's a teddy bear made from a placenta. Seems very strange to me, but not as strange as eating it I guess. Definitely not something I've been brought up around.

BTW, I was prepared for something nasty when I clicked on the link from your warning. It didn't really look all that bad.

Swhite: I didn't know what people consider gross, so I figured I'd put a warning up. I didn't think it was too bad, but if you think about what it is, it makes it pretty gross.

People are creepy. I don't get wanting to save clippings of hair, bellybuttons, foreskin, placentas. Like really?

I love that it's for people who are too grossed out to eat their placenta. They'd rather have it staring at them creepily from the mantle??

What podcast did you find this on? I'm always looking for new ones.

I listen to : "Stuff Mom Never Told You" and I think this podcast was "Should mothers eat the placenta?" or something like that. They have a lot of interesting topics focused on women.

Ditto. I was eating while browsing NEY and saw this thread, so I waited until I finished before clicking. It wasn't THAT bad, but since I knew what it was, it made it kinda gross.

I have heard of using the placenta to make your hair healthy and shiny, but never a teddy bear! I don't know where they find the people who are willing to participate in these things, but I have never seen this kind of stuff around here!

Gross fact: I did learn in nursing school that the hospitals used to sell the placentas to cosmetics companies so they could put it in lipstick, mascara and other products.

I've seen this before. I think it's kinda weird. However- if I had a doula that would capsulate the afterbirth...I might consider it as a supplement. It's supposed to be great for post partum depression. ::shrugs::

Well...maybe? Humans are actually the only mammals not to eat the after birth.

I'd talk to my midwife or doula before moving forward with it though. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" /><p><font face="Verdana" size="3">The placenta is composed of healing chemicals. </font><font face="Verdana" size="3">The known ingredients that give the placenta its healing properties are:</font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3"><u>Gonadotrophin</u>: the precursor to estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, </font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3"><u>Prolactin</u>: promotes lactation, </font></p><p><font face="Verdana" size="3"><u>Oxytocin</u>: for pain and bonding; produced during breastfeeding to facilitate bonding of mother and infant. Random fact my cuz is a doula.

I still don't think it is worth it...  I am already afraid of birth as it is.

Oooh...you'll have to ask her about it. I'm totally interested in whether or not she believes it's true.

That was...weird.  I honestly was worried it would be a lot more disturbing, but it was just odd.  I don't think I'll be getting one.
