Not Engaged Yet

Things I've Learned by Lurking

Hi everyone,

I'm officially renouncing my lurker status, assumed a proper profile, and bravely stepped into the world of at least occasionally daring to post on these message boards.

So I thought I'd start a new post to announce my new status (Yay!) and lay out a few things that I've learned in my months (yes, months) of lurking.

(1).  I absolutely cannot complain about not having an engagement ring yet.  I will be flamed.  There will be no mercy.  At all.  [And I don't have one yet...]

(2).  Grammar, proper spelling, and paragraphs are fabulous.  Flamings can possibly result from particularly egregious grammatical failures.

(3).  You all give honest advice and frequently make me giggle.

(4).  Trolls are not entertaining.

Nice to be here officially now!

I've been with my SO for close to two years now (in January).

I'm currently getting certified to teach Latin in high schools.  I'm super dorky, and I love dead languages. I work on the reading assessments for Kansas.

I prefer Greek mythological creatures, like Cerebrus, to Chupacabras!

As for the MOST important question:

I am vastly in favor of cheese!!!

As I'm vastly in favor of cheese, I'm a huge fan of mac and cheese too.  With extra cheese.

I prefer my mashed potatoes smothered in gravy.  My SO prefers them with corn.  So I always make him up a little bowl of corn whenever I make mashed potatoes.

I love Greek and Roman mythology, love Greek and Roman architecture, love Latin poetry, am in my third year of Latin, took a year and a half of Ancient Greek, and I survived Old English with a professor who puts Professor Binns to shame.  (If that's any indication, I'm also a huge Harry Potter fan!).

    Marry me.

No, but seriously. HP is awesome, but the Greek and Roman aspect is amazing. I took Intro to Classical Studies in my first year, and last year I took an entire course just on Greek mythology. It was heaven.

Desert, you will always be my mashed potato mistress.

Becunning, just out of curiousity, have you read any of the Percy Jackson books? I know they're teen books, but I love the mythology in them. Rick Riordan (the author) is really into mythology, he has another serious based on Egyptian myths.

I've heard some good things about the Percy series, but I haven't gotten around to reading it.  My full-time work & full-time school schedule has totally nixed any reading for fun this semester.

Since it appears I still have at least some of Bren's affections still, I suppose I can welcome you aboard, becunning. :)

I've read the Percy Jackson series and loved it. Although he cleaned things up a bit.  Much less sex and death. :)

I adore Kevin McKidd and can't bear to think anything involving him is a total waste, but the best thing I can say about the movie is it made me laugh in parts. Pretty sure they weren't the parts that were supposed to be funny, though. :(

Bren, if you like Egyptology at all, check out books from Elizabeth Peters. She has an incredibly long-running series of books set in late 19th century Egypt (with British Egyptologists).  The author has a Ph.D. in Egyptology.
