I loved the VC Andrews books, I read quite a few of them years ago. You have to make sure you get the rest of the series of the Flowers in the Attic. I can't remember the names, but it talks about what happens once they are out of the attic.

So here are my thoughts: Wow the powdered donuts.  Unbelievable.  Will I find out in later series how much the mother knew and who was more evil? Why did Cathy decide not to go to the police?  I just reread that part and she said a little bit about the glare of publicity but it seems the main reason was she thought her mother might miss them one day and she wanted to see her on the street and turn her back?  Like that's a real punishment?  I think if her mother saw them on the street she would run away?  Or was it because she wanted them all to stay together? And I guess it's hard to say what I would do since they were tortured and all but why the hell didn't they just convince the twins to climb down the ladder?  After they went swimming I was constantly mad they didn't just figure out a way to leave sooner. Also I was preparing myself for a lot more incest than what there actually was.And how do the next books in the series stack up?

It's been years since I've read them, and I can't remember all the details, but the series was really good. I think the reason they didn't leave sooner is because the way their mother had been before the father died. They kept thinking there was some good left in her and she loved them. And the reason for not calling the police, to me, would be for one....she's in love with her brother. Two, what you said, they wanted to make sure they stayed together. If I were you I would definitely read the other books in the series. The next one is Petals on the Wind.

See, I gather he's in love with her, but I think she is just scared of going to the police because she's scared of making a decision.  I can't blame her too much, she's only 15.  He should know better.  Foster care could be good for them right now.I'm gonna go pick up the second one today but now that they're out of the attic I can't imagine it being as good.  Maybe it will prove me wrong.

i am going to interrupt this conversation to talk of happy things. Like The Gargoyle. Which did for dark humor what The Time Traveler's Wife did for love stories. Made it amazing. I am so excited you're reading it I might pee myself. In other news, I got TWO new wood burning tools, so hooray! Thank you, you may continue.

Just started The Gargoyle at lunch today!  I confess I may lay it aside to read the second VC Andrews book but so far I'm into it.  Disgustedly horrified but into it. What do you do with wood burning?  Crafts and stuff?

Yeah. I carve gourds. I'm not very good at it. Someone resourceful such as yourself could easily find my etsy shop if you wanted to see what i have done so far. I'm not sure what else I can tell you without getting yelled at for being a vendor... In other news, I am just excited that you've started it. If you keep going PLEASE tell me what you think.

I read it a long time ago and don't remember it much.My mother was a V.C. Andrews whore and I think I've read so many of those books that I never really understood. I really loved one (the name of I can't recall) that was about a girl whose older sister died and she was always living in her shadow, etc. I think it started with an "A" The name of the book is the same as the main character.

I think that one's called "My Sweet Audrina" - that one was kind of creepy.  *shiver* The Dollanganger series (Flowers in the Attic) is my favorite one of VC Andrews, hands down.  I thought I'd be sadly disappointed in the other books, but they're all just as amazing as the first, only in different ways.  The second book is actually my favorite of the 4.  It talks about what they do from the time they leave Virginia until they're all grown up, out of school, married, etc.  And those "powdered sugar donuts" will come up again in the second book.....

Oh good to know.  I didn't get it yet because we went out last night but I'm dying to read it.

My Sweet Audrina was creepy, but a good read. As for Flowers in the Attic, Cathy gets her revenge, don't worry. I preferred later series, such as the Ruby series, or the one about the hillbillies (sorry, I can't remember the main girl's name in that!).

So I'm on Petals on the Wind now and I'm just not feeling it as much.  Only like 100 pages in so we shall see.

*Grabs book and checks out page 100*  Yeah, keep reading.  It gets MUCH better once Cathy is grown up and off on her own.  Revenge is sweet.  That girl is NUTS!  lol

So our internet server got hit by lightning last Wednesday and it's still down, but I finally had the good sense to bring in my laptop and connect to the wireless. UGH 3 days without internet at work is excrutiating! Anyways, I'm glad you liked the first one. Keep reading, they are SO good. Cathy becomes the QUEEN of revenge. Petals on the Wind is by far my favorite. The prequel tells the story of the grandparents from Flowers in the Attic and how they got the way they are, so that one is pretty awesome if you liked Flowers. After the first 3 books the series shifts pretty drastically to Cathy's children, which I didn't find as exciting as the original lineup, but it ties up loose ends pretty well and makes everything come full circle, so the last two are definitely worth reading.

Just finished Petals and I stand by my story that it wasn't as good as Flowers.  The revenge was good I guess but didn't really get to see that until the very end.  Also do they have to kill everybody interesting off?  That's annoying.  I'll probably read the others though as I'm still curious to see what happens next.

Sorry you didn't like it as much as the first one.  The others go in a completely different direction.  And don't forget Seeds of Yesterday - the one that talks about how the grandmother grew up.

Seeds of Yesterday is the last one. Garden of Shadows is the prequel. Just don't want you to get confused. :)
