Shopping recs/Poll

I want to buy new casual type clothes (for going out to eat or to a bar) but I'm having a hard time finding stuff that isn't either too young or too old looking- I'm 24.Anyone have any good recs?  Or what are your favorite places to buy clothes?

I frequent Ann Taylor. They have a petites section that always fits me well. What's your body type?
  • edited December 2011
Well to me its whatever your style is. I really like lucky brand, they have alot to choose from that doesnt look too young. I agree with PP, I like some Ann Taylor. You could also try dress barn if you have one.

Amber- I don't really have a certain style.  I guess I'm open to everything which is the problem.I just moved to the south FL and everyone's style is a little over the top for my taste.  So when I go out I feel like I look so boring.  Which is why I want to update my closet.

Yeah i definately feel you on the Tall thin body type.. I can't stand it when people dress over the top because then people that are dressed accordingly look down dressed. Lol Here where i live there's not really any place to really go out except to eat but when i go to nashville i always go for something bright or the classic black. I love wearing a black turtle neck with dark jeans and black heels... so simple but sleek.. but since you're in South FL.. i'd go for a black dress with bright heels. :)

Yeah I'm thinking dresses are probably a good way to go.  I can never find pants that are long enough for me.

I know the Loft was the one store at my mall that I shopped at.  Most of the stores at this mall seem to be targeted at rich old ladies.I guess we all have pretty similar style, b/c I also like Gap and ON, but I have the pants problem at the Gap- they don't make certain sizes in long.I haven't tried NY & Company though- thanks for the tip!

New Y ork and Company or Express um... I'm not sure what else. I'm short, so I won't be much help for tall clothes.

I'm 5'8" and I can always find pants at Ann Taylor Loft (not helpful for you), The Limited, and Banana Republic. I refuse to pay the prices at BR but there is an outlet store about 45 minutes from here so I go a few times a year and splurge. Do you have an outlet mall anywhere near you? I went to the outlets today and go AMAZING deals on clothes and shoes. I used to shop at New York & Co but haven't been impressed lately.Oh, and I hear ya on the in between age and clothes. I'm 25 and I feel like I have to really look for clothes that aren't too young but also not too frumpy and old looking. Especially since I'm a size 14 so a lot of clothes can look too young simply because their made for smaller people. Good luck!

The Banana Republic outlet is a good idea.  There was where I used to live and I got a lot of great stuff there one season.  I think there might be a really big outlet mall not too far from here as well, so I maybe I'll start there. Thanks everyone!

it seems like J Crew caters towards longer bodies. And they have a lot of materials that would be great in FL - was actually just talking to a FL friend about that yesterday.Good luck!!!

NY&Company and the Express are my staples.  What's your style though?  I found a great store in my mall recently, Charlotte Russe, it looks a little teenage-ish at first but there's some great tops there for cheap for going out.

I'm definitely going to try JCrew.  They also have a student/educator discount, which will help because students/educators don't make any money.Sadly, I don't really have a style.  But I do love Charlotte Russe and Forever 21 types for plain t-shirts and stuff like that. Thanks again!

I am totally an Old Navy girl. I LOVE their stuff. It's casual but can be dressed up easily with the right shoes and jewelry.I am short and have some junk in the trunk, though... so we're not very similar body types. lol

This is in stores only, not online, but still a great time to buy Christmas presents or stock up on tees and such.Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic are all having Give and Get right now.You sign up and save 30% on everything, and then they donate 5% of your purchase amount to the charity that you choose.http://www.gapgiveandget.com/I just got 2 pairs of jeans, a scarf, and 5 tees/tanks for $100 bucks at Old Navy. If you want to add a little color to your wardrobe for cheap, there's always H&M or Zara. I love them for trendy, mildly euro-trash stuff that you wouldn't want to pay alot for, and since I am short with very short legs, and their pants definitely don't fit me, I imagine they would work for you, lucky : ) Wish I had a tall and lean issue!

I have to do some traveling to get to a mall, but when I get the chance I always hit Charlotte Russe, Express, and NewYork&Company. I like Ann Taylor Loft too, but their clothes are usually a lot nicer than what I would wear out to a bar or something. I'm 5'8", and never have issues finding clothes at these stores. My friend and I were just shopping at Belk (one of the few stores in our town) today though, and commented on how everything is either for teenagers/college students or middle age women. It's very hard to find something cute but still suitable for the 25-40 crowd.

NY and Company has some great deals going on all the time. If you go in there, sign up for their rewards program. (Its FREE) and for ever 5 purchases you make you get a $25 off $50 coupon. There is no min $ amount each purchase has to be either.Once you sign up you get coupons in the mail weekly, some are even better than the discount you would get if you work for the company. Also, If you can't find anything in the store, look online. often you can get free shipping. My other recommendation is Target. They have some cute trendy clothes that aren't "too young" or "too old"HTH

l love New York and Company...their clothes are pretty transitional, in that I can wear them to work or out with friends, and they hold up really well. My recommendation would be to get their credit card if you plan to buy from them - they send you a ridiculous amount of coupons throughout the year when you have a card with them.ps. Ana, if you don't mind me asking, where in SoFL are you (general area)? I'm in the Fort Laud area myself...

Awesome, what a small world! :)Sawgrass is definitely worth checking out, but my advice would be to go during a weekday if at all possible. That place is literally a mad house during the weekends. Sawgrass has Gap outlet, and they have a really nice Marshalls as well.

Haha that's true! I would never drive to Homestead.  I'm still afraid of driving around FL.  The highways are just so much bigger than at home!Also- are you a scientist/grad student?  I noticed you  mentioned field courses in another thread.
