HALP with my art homework!

Okay, yes, I'm asking a silly thing of you. Here's my dilemma: I need to do some serious work on a 9-page project that's due Monday, and I have 3 pages done. Obviously, I need to buckle down. But I am running on like 4 or 5 hours of sleep here because I had an essay in Media Law due this morning and it took a LOT longer than I anticipated to crank that out.

I'm running on coffee and cinnamon chewing gum here.

What I need from you is inspiration. I am using things like dots, lines, simple shapes, and color to represent 12 (!) different expressions of the same word on each page. These are the words:

Balance
Rising
Falling
Rhythm
Calm
Aggression
Joy

So far, I have finished Falling, Joy, and Aggression (lines) and have begun working on Rising. Obviously some words need to be reused. Can you guys give me some examples of ideas or imagery that could communicate any of these words? I just need some fuel for my creativity here. It's a big assignment and I'm running out of steam. I'll try to post some examples of what I have done already so you can see.

I feel like I suck because I'm 100% new at this program and other students have a head start, but oh, well. I'll be thrilled just to have some passable, coherent examples.

    (Falling)

    (Joy)

    (Aggression)

    (Rising)

I have my last 3 "Aggression" boxes plotted out on paper, just have to fill them in on the Illustrator file. Be honest- what do you think and what kinds of things communicate or represent these words to you?

Ooh Jeana! I really like them! I can totally see how each page represents the word it's representing. I was a bit confused as to what exactly the assignment was till I saw the pics. I'll put my thinking cap on, but stuff like this has never been my strong suit.

Does each page have to either be black and white OR colour, or can they have some of both? If they can have some of both, I feel like some colour would be a nice addition in rising somehow (I think of it in a positive way, like joy). I also think muted colours and smooth lines or circles would go well for calm.

I think of joy with rising also. I also think of balancing with calm. The three things that I thought about with rising you have on your sheet already. What about using a sqiggle like lines going in a up direction?

You are really putting my mind to work today!

Also for calm I think of a ripple from a water drop.

As for balance I think of rainbows (corny huh?) Only because rainbow colors balance each other and have the perfect half shapes in multi lines. With same thickness found in each line.

Yes, you guys ARE helping. Please keep the ideas coming!

Beads- the assignment is a little complicated and I didn't want to bore anyone. Basically, each page has to use all the same tools and use them in different ways:

    1) Black Dots (Falling- done)
    2) Colored Dots (Joy- done)
    3) Colored Dots (but can change the color where dots overlap)
    4) Black Lines (Aggression- done)
    5) Colored Lines
    6) Lines that Imply Shape (Rising- in progress)
    7) Black Triangles
    8) Colored Triangles
    9) Any kind of Triangles (implied shape, color texture, etc)

Those are the 9 pages- one full page of each. I noted the ones that are finished.

What about doing a kaleidoscope of Triangle in different sizes in differnt blues and yellows for calming?
  • edited December 2011
For balance, I could see just a straight line going horizontally through the page maybe with a circle under each of the ends, a ying yang symbol, an upside down triangle, a pile of ovals (like rocks) of different sizes stacked up. A rainbow of color across the page but with both sides the same color, a checkerboard, or a color wheel.

With agression, I would use the color red and/or other hot colors like orange and yellow, such as flames?

With rising, maybe have blue at the bottom of the page and rise up in the rainbow spectrum to yellow, such as temerature is rising. (All I can think about is warmth and fire right now, I'm cold)

For rythm, I think of waves, like in a sine or cosine function or the ocean. Any type of continuing pattern across the entire page. A dancer, with all of their ups and downs and circles. I'm not quite sure how that would translate to a page though. maybe sheet music.

ETA: Just thought about a clock. Guess you could do some 'hands' lines with little dashes or circles at 12-3-6-9.

For calm - I see soft wavy lines with a pale blue, like water.

For rhythm, a couple things keep popping into my mind: the bleeps on a heart monitor (you know, the up and down upside down v's) and the other is like a southwest design - guess I don't know how to describe it quite right, but it's the pattern you typically see in southwest designs.

That's all I've got - hope it helps.

I have nothing constructive to contribute as I have no artistic abilities whatsoever, but I just wanted to say that I really like what you did with "falling".  Consider me impressed.

REALLY? You like it?! Awesome. I hope the instructor is impressed, too. Like I said, a lot of other students seem to have a better grasp on the program- but I'm not a graphic design major... so I'm a little behind on the learning curve.

If you guys are interested, I'll post the rest when I finish. Which has to be sometime today or early tomorrow, and of course I'm still open to inspiration!
