Elle - BF likes to ask me if Snape was Harry's father or make other snarky comments relating to that because he KNOWS it drives me crazy! He thinks the movies sort of gave the impression that Snape was really Harry's father in the last movie. And I loved the HP touches in your wedding :) I also get lots of crap for my HP obsession from other people. Those people can suck it though. I'll always love it <3

And Becunning - I really don't think Elle was trying to knock your love of Latin.

  • Confession 1: I'm counting down the next 12 months till I can seek new employment.

Confession 2: The first thing I see when I look at my E-Ring is my fiance and daughter. I never thought that is what I'd see but it makes me smile every time.

  • I'm a little late to the party, but whatever ...

U/O: I am beyond frustrated with the Penn State sanctions. I agree with everything Bri said. I've grown up adoring Penn State, and may be a little biased. I am apalled, sickened, and so very very sad at what happened. However, I do not agree with taking it out completely on the football program and the remaining players. They had nothing to do with the situation at all. To take it out on them is a little excessive. I don't forsee PSU having much, if any football program in the near future, and this makes me want to cry.

Confession: If I don't hear some good news by mid next week, I may seriously have a mental breakdown.

Confession: BF keeps saying that he isn't sure he wants kids, mainly because of all his health problems - and him not wanting to potentially burden me with raising a child by myself if his health issues caused a fatality. The more I think about it, the sadder this makes me- because I feel like at least having a child would be like still having a part of him with me. Is this weird? IDK... it seems odd to me...
  • Okay, I'm on my phone, so I apologize in advance if stuff is wonky and/or if I don't answer/address everything. My point in bringing up the academic allAmerican is because there was a broad generalization of college athletics. You can't judge college sports as a whole because of Penn State. For jaycee to say "I'm glad SOMEONE knocked college sports off it's pedestal" is doing just that. I have been in this business for ten years, and here is my main observation: academics HATES sports, and wants to limit athletics in the grand landscape of collegiate life. In the grand majority, athletic departments want to also ENHANCE the academic side of whatever college or university you're speaking of. Our university cut several academic programs over the last year, and there has been outrage... "how are we cutting academic programs yet building a new football stadium?" First, People don't understand that the money comes from two different areas. Second, they don't account for the fact that the university had been LOSING money by keeping these programs active. Third, they fail to acknowledge any of our highly academically achieving studentathletes... Because they are just "athletes" in the academic world, no matter what achievements we publicize. I said in my earlier post, I do think there should have been sanctions at Penn State. I think the fine, extreme monitoring of the department AND university administration, and even if you want to vacate Paterno's wins, great. But penalizing the current studentathletes, coaches and administration is taking it to a different, far too extreme level.

</div><div>Exactly. That's the point, and I think it's justified. I do really feel for the athletes that are there right now, but I think the football program deserves to be totally desiccated. That's what you get when you spend 20+ years covering up effing CHILD MOLESTATION. It's football. Life WILL go on. I think it will actually be a good thing for PSU to have the chance to rebuild a program that's not overshadowed by this. </div><div>
</div><div>Also, the more I think about it, the less that I think this is actually going to stop a majority of the Penn State football fans from paying for their season tickets, etc. The fans are die hard...I'm sure they will still be tailgating as always (if not more enthusiastically) up there come next fall.

  • I still don't see where you addressed my UO. I also still stand by my previous comments. I really feel for the players, but I think a lot of people were expecting sports to come first and foremost like they usually do. This is exactly the reason why a sex scandal against young innocent children was swept under the rug: the football program was more important to those who did the sweeping.

  • I did address it. I said you were painting a broad generalization of college athletics. Then I explained why.

Hard hitting sanctions tend to punish those who are no longer there.  Were you also against the sanctions at USC or OSU??  When have punishments handed down by the NCAA been felt the most by the ones who committed the acts?

I think that the financial penalties need to hit the university hard.  The culture of the university was so enshrined in the football program that it chose to look the other way while boys were getting raped on campus.  Nothing says lack of institutional control than deeming it not important to report alleged rape to outside authorities, or to let the football coach make those decisions.

Unfair to the student athletes?  It was unfair for such atrocious acts to continue because it wasn't in the football program's or the university's best interest to alert outside authorities.  That is unfair.

Does it suck that the financial hardships will be felt beyond the football field?  Yes.  However, the benefits of looking the other way were felt beyond the football field.

The $60M is the estimated equivalent to the annual gross revenue of the football program.  ONE year.  If they got the 'death penalty,' then they would have lost the same amount of money.

For the record, I loooooooooove college sports.  I grew up in a college town.  DH was a scholarship athlete.  I went to a huge football school.

  • Shoes, I'm so sorry about your dog. Hugs to you.

Becunning, I want to say that your use of Latin doesn't bother me at all. I'm sure I tend to gloss over it unless it's something I can convert via Spanish. We all have our subjects that are important to us. I'm very sorry that your BF makes you feel that way about it.

My confession for today: I managed to lock my keys in my trunk and felt like such a dumbass. I threw my laptop bag in the trunk and closed it and went where are my keys? Turns out they got caught under the laptop bag. H had to drive down to unlock it for me. Fortunately, it was still pre-rush hour and only took 30 min, but it was over an hour he had to take out of his work day.
  • Unpopular Opinion: I hate the "book" 50 Shades of Grey and get in a rage like bitchy mode any time one of my friends sayst "it's the best novel I've ever read!!!!"  Can't believe I bought it.  Still can't bring myself to finish it.  I'm even more so insulted that the main character is an English major.  An English major?!?!?!

Confession: I was really hoping that BF would propose during our anniversary trip to Disneyland in two weeks.  But, I know that there is still at least $2000 left to pay on the ring before he can even bring it home and then however long it would take for him to actually propose.  A girl can dream though.

Confession: I ate a hot pocket for lunch.  It made me feel like I was 10 again. And also kind of sick.

I like reading latin. I think it's fun trying to decifer since I have little knowledge of it besides botanical plant names.

My UO (don't hate me lol) I don't understand America's obsession with young adult novels. I read the first few Harry Potters... eh. Took me two weeks to get through Twilight. Should have taken me a couple hours. And that was only because I made a deal with my BFF that I would read it if she read Brahm Stoker's Dracula. Didn't even try Hunger Games. I'm a heavy reader but I tend to steer away from stuff that's written down to a young adult level. Didn't notice it so much with HP but still wasn't a fan. Just my opinion.

Becunning I don't like that you're feeling hurt, but I get what Elle is saying. She refers to HP in posts about books, or with newbs, but she rarely just drops random quotes or spells into posts. I have also noticed that you are using Latin all. the. time. Part of that could be from FB It doesn't mean you shouldn't continue to love it. It doesn't even mean that you should change your behavior at all, she just gave you her opinion. And I know you're going through a tough time with your BF, but please don't lump us into the 'disinterested' category. I have zero desire to read 50 Shades.

Yes, Jorja is correct. Her & I are right there with you on the 50 Shades hate. I actually posted a Facebook status about it the other day, because my eyes were starting to hurt from rolling them so much at people on Facebook raving about this stupid crap. My BEST FRIEND (ugh, it hurts my heart) responded, saying that she doesn't read books because of how well they're written... if she did, she'd be reading "<span class="commentBody">some boring Pulitzer Prize novel that's 700 pages long and puts me to sleep." I kind of wanted to punch her in the throat.

    I also love hot pockets.

  • I confess that I got home so late from my hair appointment that I didn't want to cook or order in so I had leftover Carvel birthday ice cream cake for "dinner".

  • Confession:

I'm way touchier than normal due to (1) major life changes and (2) hormones. Really, can't a uterus give a gal a break?

  • <3 thanks for the Latin love. I understand not everyone is going to love it like I do, but it is a big part of who I am. I also now have several facebook friends from my Latin camp, so there will definitely be a grip of Latin on my facebook page. I mean, my facebook page is SET to the Latin language. So when I "like" something on facebook, I hit "mihi placet." Such is my life, and I unapologetically love it.

I'm glad, Tarra, that you had a good conversation with your husband. I am also, as always, happy to translate things into Latin.
  • Confession: About a week ago, while good and tipsy, I told Donald, "I can't wait to marry you!" He responded with "It's coming sooner than you think." I was very careful not to engage in further conversation and have been really good about not bringing it up since then, but it does have me wondering what he's got up his sleeve. Also, even though I think I know it's not happening this soon, I wonder if he's planning on asking me at his family reunion this weekend. I'm worried that I'll be dissappointed if he doesn't and I realize that is stupid.

Confession #2: I have been smoking a lot of cigs since the loss. I know it's not good for me, especially if we want to try again as soon as we're able.

I can totally get why a lot of people don't like YA- but I really dislike saying that it's "written down to a young adult level". And YA is about SO MUCH MORE than just Harry Potter (which really started off as more of a middle grade read), and Twilight and even Hunger Games. (Which I think you should at least try- because I love it.)

There are some brilliant books out there that are still YA. Try Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein - it's remarkable. And YA is such a HUGE genre, that it really bugs me to hear it generalized and lumped all together.

I know I'm late but it feels good to confess things some times:

    1. I'm kind of terrified about starting law school. I'm worried that it'll be incredibly hard and I'll hate it and won't be able to adapt. But I'm more worried that I won't make friends, and won't find people I like there. I just want it to be summer forever!

    2. I found out a few weeks ago that my glaucoma is progressing - I was diagnosed a while ago, but it hadn't changed at all so I was hoping it wasn't REALLY glaucoma. But now it is. It makes me angry that I have this at 21, and I'm now taking eye drops and scheduling surgeries to try and prevent it from progressing.
