Olympics!

Can we talk about the upcoming Summer Olympics?  I might be more excited for the Olympics than I am for my wedding.

1.  Of course; I made the post.

2.  Summer, but I love the winter games, too.

3.  Gymnastics, judo, soccer, swimming, and diving.  In winter, I love the downhill skiing adn figure skating.

4.  When Kerri Strug clinched the gold for the US team in womens gymnastics in 1996 by landing that vault on a hurt ankle.  I still tear up when I think about it.

5.  I watch the medal count religiously and get irrationally annoyed if another country has more golds than the US.

I don't like that snowboarding is an Olympic sport because I have an irrational hatred (that's probably too strong of a word...maybe irritation?) of snowboarders. Oh and I don't think ice dancing should be an Olympic sport either.

What's not to love? 

I'm just a sucker for sports in general, and getting to see so many of them (especially ones you don't really see that often at any other time) crammed into a couple weeks is just Heaven on Earth.

I also love the emotion, drama, and stories in the Olympics.  There are amazing moments every time.  Broken records, come-from-behind miracles, instances of overcoming impossible odds...  it's just...  the best thing ever.

Gymnastics in the summer, hockey in the winter.

Hmm I don't think I have one.  I really loved the gold medal hockey game in 2010 (even though we lost), USA vs Canada.  A lot of the guys from the Devils were on both of the teams so that was cool to see.

USA! USA! USA!  I get so pumped & feel such pride for our country that I tear up way too much when I watch & we win (or if we lose).  I'm ridiculous.

Summer all the way. H and I argue about this, but he is clearly wrong He's a skier, I'm a swimmer, so there is that.

Any swimming events. Love women's gymnastics too. 
4.  Favorite Olympic moment so far?
Toss up between the Strug moment and Phelps eeking out those 8 medals. There was one race I didn't think he was going to win, but he pulled it out in the very last stroke. . . anyone remember that? I lost it watching that.

That would be #2 on my list.  He threw in that extra half-stroke and just barely managed it.  Remember how shocked his mom was?  She had to sit down.  It was adorable.

Downhill Racing, slalom in particular (mostly because I used to ski race and that was my event)

Nothing is jumping out at me right now.
ETA: Even though I wasn't around for it, 1980 US Hockey Team winning the Gold.

It is a freaking beautiful day outside today and I am stuck in class for 5 hours =(

Yes! Moreso the winter games though.

See above. I find there are very few events at the winter games I'm not interested in, but there are lots I'm not interested in at the summer games.

Luge, diving, downhill skiing - those types of things.

4.  Favorite Olympic moment so far?

When Alex Bilodeau won the gold in men's moguls last Winter (the first Canadian gold medal). Amazing. So was the Canadian men's hockey win. Basically, the winter 2010 Olympics were a big deal for us Canadians overall. 

5.  Any other random thoughts you'd care to share?

I love how the Olympics bring together the country. Or at least, it happens in Canada. We don't have a lot of national pride, but the Vancouver games really brought that out and it was cool to see.

That might be my favorite Olympic moment actually. I remember sitting in my friend's basement watching it and a bunch of us were ridiculously into that race. There was actual hugging/crying/cheering when he won. It's probably the most I've ever cared about the Olympics.

I don't really have a favorite, I don't really watch much of it unless it's the only thing on.

I liked the Hockey game where Canada won? I was at placement then and all the patients were in bed so I watched it with my preceptor. He was very socially awkward so we watched the Olympics constantly then. That's the one thing I remember about who won what.

Hmm... I'm not sure if I have a particular one. My mom and I would watch the ice skating competitions and eat thin mints.

My parents went to Nagano in 1998 for the winter olympics. They brought me back some really cool stuff, like a rubix hockey puck that glowed in the dark.

One of my friends from high school may be competing this year on the US men's gymnastics team.

The whole summer of 96 my mom kept reminding me that the wrong Kerri was on the Olympic gymnastic team.  I took gymnastics and stopped to dance more, my mom never liked that decision.
