Reduced dessert ----> Reduced fat?

I have vowed to not eat dessert (or snack after dinner) on week nights. I'm trying to loose the holiday/winter pudge I gathered these last few months. I don't want to restrict myself too much, because then I'll fail. But I think I was over doing it for wayyy too long.

Has anyone else given stuff up recently? Maybe for Lent? (Its Lent time, right?)
.

It *is* Lent time, as of today.

I don't observe, but I like it when people give up things besides food. I think the idea is you're supposed to either give up something you would usually buy and give the money to charity or give up something that's taking up your time and spiritual energy and devote that time and energy to something good for others or your spiritual growth.

Or is it traditionally a time to deprive yourself to show solidarity with Jesus's suffering? My Christian knowledge is a little fuzzy these days. Maybe someone can enlighten me!

ETA: Jen, go you on the healthy kick! You can do it! Let yourself have a few bites if you're really craving something, though!

I'm not even a little bit Catholic, but I'm seriously thinking about giving up alcohol for a little while.

The last time I drank, I got waaaay too drunk.  Didn't get sick or anything, but I was emotional, loud, and clumsy.  It wasn't even fun.  I don't have a desire to feel like that again any time soon, so I think I want to re-learn how to have fun without booze.  I can be somewhat socially awkward and drinking helps me deal with social situations, but I've become possibly too dependent...

Anyway, I rambled on about that for too long.  I'm working on dieting, too.  I'm really having trouble with my eating habits lately.  Blah.

Elle, I can totally understand this. I used to struggle with social awkwardness like crazy. These days, I sometimes still have my moments, and being a classic introvert (Google Myers-Briggs personality typing for more), it's still sometimes rough going for me in social situations. I know exactly how tempting it can be to use drinks to loosen up and feel more comfortable. I think it's very admirable that you're working on this! I also think it's okay to get a little silly among good friends, though. :)

There are a lot of delicious desserts that aren't too fatty - try mixing coconut milk with smooshed bananas and vanilla extract, stick it in the freezer until slightly slushy - it's delicious, filling, and healthy!  Coconut milk may be high in fat, but it's good fat.  Nothing like sugar and processed flavorings.

I'm an ESTJ. The first time I took that test in high school, I got an ISTJ. By the end of senior year I got my ESTJ, and it has stuck ever since.

calindi- that sounds tasty! I dunno if I have ever tried to make anything with coconut milk... something new to try this weekend!

Elle - too funny, I'm an ENTJ and while I don't know what my BF is, he's definitely an I.

jenjennifer - Maybe instead of saying 'no sweets on weeknights,' you finish off each meal with something small, like a tootsie roll or a mini reese's peanut butter cup. So you aren't depriving yourself, but you're also not adding 500 calories at the end of your meal.

I like to call myself a 'reformed Catholic,' I'm really closer to Methodist in my beliefs. I believe Lent is a time for you to give up something that is difficult for you to do, whether it's monetary or food, to show solidarity with Jesus' 40 days of temptation.

I'm planning on giving up alcohol, but only after my parents leave on Monday :) I really don't need the extra calories so I think it will be a good boost to all the working out I've been doing. Yes, I still give things up, because even though I'm not Catholic, I still have that Catholic guilt! lol

I taught at a Catholic school for three years, and was raised Catholic. I should really know it is the Thursday after Ash Wednesday (Please don't mention my mistake to my grandmother!). But I am not a practicing Catholic, I actually consider myself Agnostic. Not spirtual at all.

The fat seems to be reducing! I'm down a pound or two.

mmm tootsie rolls and peanut butter cups. I really suck at having just one. My bf likes to rub it in my face that I can't be "addicted" to candy, and that it is completely up to me how much I eat. But I rationalize each of the 37 pieces I consume before the stomach ache sets in. And when it subsides? I have another! I can't deny it. I love candy.

I only know when Lent is because I live in Mardi Gras land, and I never miss Mardi Gras.  I single-handedly ate 5 pounds of crawfish on Tuesday night.

Jen and Tiger, should I feel weird that, according to your personality types, you have more in common with my FI than I do?

When I lived in Germany my host-mom used to make this AMAZING dessert, and it only has as much sugar as you let it.  It never had a name, but I make it for parties as often as possible.

layer the bottom of a bowl/pan/whatever you want to make it in (you could do it in little cups to take to work/class/etc) with frozen berries or fresh chopped berries.
Fill the rest of the cup with plain lowfat vanilla yogurt.  Or, if you're feeling adventurous, it was initially supposed to be a mixture of 1/2 quark (you can't get it in the US) and 1/2 yogurt.  Quark is half marscapone cheese and half creme fraiche.
    Sprinkle with brown sugar.

Since you control the amount of brown sugar, you control the amount of "non-natural" sugar in the dessert.  It's amazing.

Jewish guilt is pretty hefty, too. (My family is part Jewish.)
