I am glad to be back in the US!

My two week trip to Peru was awesome! I had a great time in the jungle, those 9 days just flew by.  I experienced jungle rain, wildlife, insects, spiny plants, native stories, giant roaches, ridiculous food, no electricity, and all around relaxing tech-free awesomeness.  We caught a bunch of neat insects, I caught a few giant butterflies.  The days were long and full of hard work, but we had enough downtime.

This is me on our first night in the Amazon, that's the Tambopata river behind me.  I got this awesome jaguar stamp in my passport for the Tambopata reserve.  The trip into the reserve required a one hour bus ride from the airport and a two hour motorized canoe ride down the river.

This is a big megasoma beetle (scarab) that blundered into our sheet trap one night.  He was a big cutie! I wanted to keep him as a pet!

My favorite insect that I caught.  This is a day flying moth! We were curating this morning, the guy behind me is gutting and stuffing some giant katydids and grasshoppers.

A caterpillar party.  No joke, a congregation of leps is entomologically referred to as a "party".

Poor little buddy fell on his eye and got all squinty

My cute little moth that I almost took home with me.

Notice the lack of Machu Picchu pictures?????????? I got the Incan equivalent of Montezuma's revenge and was stuck in bed all day while everyone else got to see Machu Picchu.  I also enjoyed my 21 hour trip back home sicker than a dog.  I am still not quite normal, but I am at least done taking cipro from the sickness.

My GERD was not happy about any of the Peruvian food, heavy sauces, acidic foods.  I am so glad to be back in american cuisine territory again, even though I can't quite eat it yet!

The jungle was amazing and I would go back any day! I have never seen the stars so beautifully or heard such amazing thunder and rain.

I have also seen that a lot went on here while I was gone, breakups, an engagement, and a lot of new people!  It'll take me a while to catch up with you guys.

Welcome back! Looks like an awesome trip!

How do you go about catching bugs? The only bugs I've ever caught were lightening bugs with an old peanut butter jar :) I have feeling you have better technology then that!

    Oh goodness...that beatle is HUGE!

Welcome back. Thanks for posting lots of pictures! So sorry to hear that your tummy hurt when you were away. I was really hopeful that it was going to be fine. How long does it usually take for your body to readjust?

Do you think you'll go back?

Ember, someone actually used an old peanut butter jar on the trip! We have these tubes called falcon tubes that we fill with 95% ETOH (smells like hard liquor, bleh) that we plop insects into.

The tiny stuff gets sucked up into an aspirator as can be seen around my neck in the next picture.

Cyanide jars are used to kill the nasty wasps, spiders, and moths.  Butterflies are put into glassine envelopes to stay flat.  You can either pick up the insect by hand or with forceps.

Liv, my anxiety only bothered me my first night in the jungle, but I had my TA to talk me through it.  My friends were really good about distracting me during the flights.  After that first night I did really well.

ETA: Lunar, my stomach thing is based off of acid so if I stay on top of my medicine it doesn't take long to balance out. While down there I was on my medication and only sometimes had to pop some tums.

Aw, thank you so much Liv.

I did run away screaming on two occasions from my room.  First was when there were two giant roaches on my night stand, I had a boy remove them.  Second was when a rat went running across my friends nightstand, I had to get a boy to "shank" it (I was in a panic when I asked him to shank it, the poor little thing never got shanked and it was never seen again).  I'm pretty sure I scared it off with all my yelling.  The two things I stay away from in the field are roaches and rodents.

Glad you had an awesome trip!

(I totally used those tubes to store fish guts in last semester...mmmmbiology.)

And I would have run screaming from rodents and roaches too - we had roaches in Mexico and I was NOT happy hearing them scuttling across our floor in the middle of the night.

Also, I admire your ability to hold that gigantic beetle.  I totally thought it was a tarantula at first.  What family?  They aren't Hemiptera, are they?  I always forget...

    Yup, I study bugs.

Peek, it's a coleoptera in the family scarabaeidae, it's a megasoma. I love me some beetles.
