Dress

So I finished making this dress this past weekend. My favorite part is the flower.

I am considering wearing it to my cousin's wedding in May. The ceremony will be in her parent's backyard, then the reception will be at the country club less than a mile away. My "tasks" are to help with programs and cake cutting.

The biggy that I am worried about is that her colors are brown and turquise. Would it be akward if I wore this brown dress? I'm really nervous about wearing something I made at the wedding, although her mom is making the bridesmaid dresses. Am I over thinking this? What are your thoughts?

I think its really cute. I'd feel the same way about wearing a color that was part of the wedding. Maybe ask you cousin? It would be perfect for a springtime wedding.

I think as long as you aren't wearing white to a wedding (or the colour the bride wears in other cultures) than you are fine. Most guests do not know what colour the bridesmaids will be wearing anyways.

Great job on the dress BTW!

#1) That is HELLA cute! Great job!
#2) If you are comfortable in the dress, like the way it looks, etc then I say wear it! There will be lots of people around wearing whatever colours they want....your brown dress will be different than the BM's so I wouldn't worry about it. I wore a white and brown dress to FSIL's wedding in 2009 and the BMs wore brown...no one confused us. It's all good;)

That's cute. The dress will be fine to a wedding, regardless of the wedding colors.

I think it's ADORABLE! You're very talented, and I'd say go right ahead and wear it - there are so many different shades of brown, so unless the girls are wearing polka dots, I'd so go for it! No one will notice, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of compliments.

I have to make a running skirt soon (want something girly for the Princess themed race I'm doing) and I have to sew it by hand since I don't have a machine. But I'd love any advice you have on how to go about cutting out the pattern and figuring out the right size!

Thanks guys. I will probably end up asking her.

Now I need some shoes to go with it... Anybody want to help look? I am pretty clutsy so I usually like to stick to flats. I was kinda looking at these:

I would ask her. If I am close to the bride I always try to make sure I'm not too matchy match with the bridal party.

    I like the 2nd pair @ 6pm. I am considering getting them now :)

I don't see a problem with it at all.
And if you're cutting cake and handing out programs, she might like that you are wearing the wedding colors.

Oh, and you are awesome. That dress is great, and you look great.

Cate - I would suggest a pattern. I first tried to make a dress without one and it didn't turn out so great. I made a maniquin for it which was fun, but the end product wasn't quite working for me.

That stinks that you have to make it by hand. Do you not have any friends that have one that you could borrow? I made mine according to the pattern, but if there was anything that didn't fit right after I made a seam, I took it out and redid it.

Another option is to use a skirt that you do like and is about the same shape as the one you want to make and just use it as a pattern.

That manequin is so cute! Haha.

I've made a cape by hand before, and it turned out really fantastic! I'm pretty good with a needle and thread, but sadly I don't have any friends down here who have a sewing machine. I've debated buying one at some point, but I don't think right now is that time.

If you come across any skirt patterns you'd recommend, let me know! Can you PM me your name so I can facebook you so I can bother you directly with any questions I have as I do it? If you don't mind!!!

This dress is sooo cute! Don't be nervous about wearing something you made to the wedding because you are one talented chica! I think you should definitely wear it, regardless of the colors.

I like the brown shoes better with the dress. Keep in mind that you don't have to do white or brown shoes. You could always add some color with shoes and a handbag. I'm thinking purple would be so cute! The brown shoes you picked also come in "Violet Patent" which I think would look nice.

Cate - This one looks relatively easy. You could make the top a little bigger and use elastic to make it the right size. Although I'm not sure if that extra fabric would get in the way while you are running.

That could work! I'm going to need an elastic waistband instead of a zipper, but that's easy enough - and I could just cut the skirt shorter so it doesn't catch between my legs. I'm wearing running pants anyway, but the skirt will go over them.

    Something like these:

Start running! I'm SOOO excited for this race that I'm sure I'll be running it again next year - always up for running partners, if you wanna train for next year! It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought - I started running (for the first time in my LIFE) in October, and I couldn't even run a quarter mile without stopping. Just last night, I ran 6 miles without stopping, and last weekend I did 10 miles (with a few walking periods and rest stops built in). But I'm now addicted!

Niknik, that is super cute! I think you could definitely wear it to the wedding. I wish I could make dresses, but I never paid enough attention when my grandma used to make me dresses when I was little. Maybe next time I visit, I'll ask for another lesson. :)

I might have to take you up on that Cate! I can barely make it a half mile right now, but I'm sure I could work up to it.

SKP - To be honest, I would be a little nervous to add any other colors to this. I already feel like I'm kinda out there with my polka dots!

This is my first time to attempt dresses. It really isn't as difficult as it seems, especially if you have a pattern.

When I was younger my mom was weird and only let me wear skirts and coulottes (sp?). If I wanted to wear coulottes I had to make them myself. So after ripping several jean skirts playing football, I finally gave in and learned how.

Do it! Check out Couch to 5k program (just google it). It's a great way to get started. I'm telling you, interval training (running for a few minutes, then walking for a minute) is a great way to build up your distance and endurance.

That sounds terrible, only being able to wear skirts and culottes (those are like goucho pants that look like skirts, yes?). Was this a religious thing? My Mom's Mom used to make her wear skirts to school every day - she wasn't allowed to wear jeans at all, so she bought a pair and left them at her best friend's house and would stop by and change on the way to and from school. Her Mom never figured it out!

Yep, it definitely was a religious thing that I absolutely hated. Here was the style that I usually wore. Although, my other option was a highly pleated one that had about ten yards of fabric in it.

When my mom was making me do this, I always changed in the car on the way to my dad's house or when I was going to lunch with my grandma. I got really good at not showing any part of my body while changing!

Nik, that dress is adorable! I also love polka dots!

I would worry about matching the bridesmaids. They're probably not wearing polka dots (too bad for them). I feel like you need flats with a bow or flower on them.

Nik - no worries. You will look adorable.

Cate - I am doing the couch to 5K program currently (just started last week). Your experience is very encouraging because, at this point, I can't see myself running 3 miles non stop. I know I'll get there, but it is good to hear that you did the same thing and have progressed so quickly!

Keep going! If I had just done the Cto5k with no further goal, I probably would have stopped running entirely after doing a 5k. It wasn't until I started going the distance of a 10k that I got hooked.

My suggestion would be to book yourself for a 10k in 3 months. It'll give you motivation to train, and will push you to keep going. You can totally do it - I trained for a half marathon in 3 months (which is equivalent to 23k, so it's basically a little more than twice a 10k). If you don't have a race booked in the not-so-distant future, it's easy to just not run. If you know you're going to be held accountable by having the race, you're more likely to train and push yourself.

If you want any more tips, I'm happy to help!

ETA: If you want to know about how I went from a couch potato in November to being able to run 10 miles in January, read my blog: http://neverranamile.wordpress.com/
