WR: Another Check!

This morning I sent off the contract and deposit for our photographer! I'm so happy that this part is done, it was stressing me out. Although I must say photographers are the most attentive vendors I've ever seen!

Those of you planning, what check are you working on right now?

Nice! We're pretty much all done shopping wise. Waiting for the cake topper to come in. We've still got to rent some more tables and chairs.
    I'm not good at feelings.

    Yay Hazel!

We're talking to the photographers tonight to nail down the contract, so that's next up for us, too!

Which photog did you end up picking?

Cate - I bet you can guess :) It's the one that is more casual and I think will suit our vibe better.

Congrats on the check Hazel!  I dread looking for photographers because I know they can eat up so much budget.

No checks yet for us.  We have been scoping out venues to determine our date (probably March 2012).  We have decided that we want an outdoor venue for at least our ceremony with an indoor option.

However, last night, FI's aunt offered us her residence for our wedding, so we are definitely taking it into consideration.  She has a lake house on about 25 acres, so it would be absolutely beautiful.  Now we are comparing the cost of what it would take for tents, tables, chairs, linens, etc.  If it comes up to be close to the same, I think we'll use her place.

Well we have the venue picked, the wedding coordinator, and the next check is to decide on which caterer to hire.  The menus all sound so good!  Yay for everyone making progress!

From someone planning a residence style wedding, it is a pain because you have a lot more things to think about. However, you have a lot of flexibility!

    Date, venue and photographer.

Wedding is back seat to the house for now.  Those are what I wanted to get done right away... maybe this summer come back to planning.  Just too much at once.

    Hazel, you are on fire!

We got our food tasting done last month (it was delicious!), so our menu is all set.

I told FI he needs to start on the paperwork to allow his brother to officiate.

Mana - That is so exciting! When do you get to move in?

Leia - I try to swtich between vendor things and things we will do ourselves. I'm trying to figure out how much alcohol we need to buy because we will need to selectively shop. Alcohol pricing in Ontario is brutal! This is both fun and a bit stressful. I don't know how one planning tool says we need 30 cases of beer and another one says 16, being off my some 300 bottles of beer is a little much for me.

Caterer A: Apps: poke wonton cups (poke is raw tuna that's been cubed and tossed in sesame oil and Japanese soyu sauce with onions and other herbs), grape  tomato and baby mozzarella skewers with a  balsamic reduction and chicken satay  Entree:  filet mignon with demi glaze and a cajun seared ahi, red bliss potatoes and lemon grass infused rice, veggie malange, they are also doing wedding cupcakes.

Caterer B: Is Apps: Ahi poke with wasbi and ginger, sweet and sour caramelized maui onion and goat cheese tartlet and a selection of satays. Entree: Herb crusted prime rib and seared fresh catch with cilantro butter and garlic lime, they can also do wedding cupcakes and creme brulee.  FI and I want to crack the top of the bruelee rather then cut a cake.  Hahaha

Caterer C: Apps: pretty much the same as above. Entrees: Prime Rib and Sauteed Macadamia Encrusted Mahimahi with various sides.

Caterer D: Apps: Seared lemon pepper ahi on a fried wonton skin, pan fried chicken dumplings and Skewered herb shrimp with a pesto sauce.  Entree: Buffet of Tri-tip with a Cabernet Black pepper sauce and fresh coconut crusted mahimahi with citrus cream sauce and apple banana macadamia nut salsa.

As you can see the trend FI wants beef and I want fish!  Tuna steak.... hmmm yummy.  Which one sounds good to you?

Hazel - well our situation is, FI is getting out of the Army.  So from what he told me, the Army will move him one last time to either to the state where he joined... or closer.  So moving us 20 miles is WAY closer than 500 miles.  Also, they won't move him/us unless it's within 6 months before he's getting out.  His date is mid Nov, so Mid May is the earliest they will move us.  Once we get a firm date to move we have to set it up with the movers (they pack and everything for us from what he told me) and break the lease on our apt.  It's ok, i'm a civilian lost in the Military world sometimes...

Elle getting the venue is the biggest thing that was for me.  So I say once you have your venue everything else falls into place.

Hazel you can come!  I need people with taste buds to help me pick food.

I like all teh caterers but Caterer A and B are my top choices now.  Hence the next check mark.  Added bonus caterer A though has all the rentals (chairs, tables, linens) and bartender and bartending supplies included in their quote.

Cate - So exciting! Has the lawyer gone over the contract with a fine toothed comb? My FI did, I think it caught our photog by surprise because he is pretty small town. My response was, "Umm, sorry, FI used to work in film in LA so he has a different view of contracts than most".  How many hours are you thinking of doing?

Mana - Dealing with Ikea is enough of a pain, I think you are sufficiently suffering :)

Motolyn - I could definitely use a trip to Hawaii! All sound like excellent choices, so that should be a big relief for you. To me though, the creme brulee option is clearly the winner :)

Elle - Have you come any closer to a venue decision? I noticed that the girls around here were giving you views contrary to what you expected.

Oh gosh, yes!  We have a phone call tonight so he can grill them.  I think there are several sub-clauses my soon-to-be-lawyer wants them to insert.  We'll see how that goes.

They have some weird clause about how if they can't show up that day, all they owe us is the deposit back.  Uh, no.  If you blow off our wedding day, you owe us damages, not just our money back.  So we want a "2 week notice" clause - if they cancel with at least 2 weeks notice, they owe us the deposit back and that's it.  If they cancel last minute but can send a mutually agreeable photographer, then that's fine, too.  But if they cancel and leave us without a photographer at all?  No way!

They also have a clause about how if the equipment fails, they're not responsible to deliver photos.  So we want them to agree to bring at least 1 backup camera for each photographer before we'll agree to an "equipment malfunction" clause.
And to require them to back up the original digital images on at least 2 separate machines after the wedding.  I don't want to hear, "Ooops, my computer died, no more photos!"

We're doing 8 hours, 2 photographers.  They're also including an engagement session and a trash-the-dress session (which my guy is SUPER excited about - he's adament that I need to buy an inexpensive dress so we can go wild in the TTD - water, dirt, sand, mud, paint - you name it!).  Yay!

Me, too!  I feel like I'd rather deal with them as a hypothetical, though, than not get it in writing and end up in a very bad position should a real situation arise!!!  Andplusalso, living with a law student makes you constantly aware of 'worst case scenarios'.

A girl on my local board had her caterer cancel and not refund her deposit with only 2 weeks until her wedding!  Yikes!  She had to take him to small claims court to get the deposit back, and nearly a year later she's still not got her money back.  Luckily she found a great caterer able to work with the 1/2 catering budget she had left and come up with something awesome.  I can't imagine, though!!!
