*Jorja..Nursey...and other nurses*

I'm revising my resume and have a question about job experience. I wasn't planning on listing non-nursing related work experience, but I don't want to leave out the fact that I opened/owned a business. Do you think that it should be included even though it isn't related to my field?

Also, my university requires us to develop a professional portfolio that is expected to be taken on interviews. We were advised that along with our resume to include copies of profession development courses, certifications, clearances, awards, honors, and any presentation materials or other "creative" ideas to enhance the portfolio.

Would it be obnoxious and unnecessary to include a newspaper article from when FI and I opened the pizza shop? I feel that emphasizing this experience could help me with management roles and so forth in the future.

  • I think you should definitely include it on your resume. Anything demonstrating leadership is great. Plus, you could totally talk up your customer service expertise in your interview, as we all know that's the new catch phrase in healthcare. I'm not sure about the newspaper article, because all I ever had wast resume and cover letter. If you're including other extras, though, I don't think it would be obnoxious. Do you have an advisor or something whose opinion you could ask? Good luck with the job search!

  • I don't think I would include the newspaper article. Keep it short and simple when you're first sending things out. If you score an interview. keep it in your purse and if they ask about it, show them the article.

  • I have to run to a few meetings, but I promise to answer it later. :)

  • Sorry, I meant I would bring it in the portfolio on an interview...I would just be sending out a cover letter and resume!

Jorja, those are my thoughts as well! I'm going off of what our professors are harping on us, but I don't want to make a bad move and end up ruining an interview.

  • I agree with Jorja - definitely include the experience on your resume, but leave out the newspaper article.... especially if the job isn't entrepreneurial or pizza related.
