Penn States Charges

Have you guys read or heard about the Penn State charges?

Here is a link:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/07/justice/pennsylvania-coach-abuse-charges/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

CN: One of the old assistance coaches for the Penn State football team, Sandusky, is being charges with sexually abusing boy from his foundation to help young boys (I am not sure what they had to do to be in this foundation) for over a decade. Apparently a bunch of people knew about it and did nothing to stop it. Perjury was filed against the programs directors for lying to the grand jury (that they knew nothing) and failing to report sexual abuse.

Apparently Sandusky was having sex with these kids in the locker room showers.... How horrible is that? How is it that no one stopped him? Why is that it went on for a decade and NO ONE made any attempt to stop it? It just makes me so sad. Preventing sexually abuse is very close to my heart and I feel for these poor boys. :/

Thoughts? Issues? How do you think this will affect Penn state?

This is just awful. We've been talking about it all day around here. (It's a little-known fact that our football coach is 2nd behind JoePa in active wins leaders, in all of Division I college football!)

JoePa is a legend... but if he knew about it (and he did know about at least one allegation) and didn't push anything further, I think you need to hold him at least partially responsible. He was told about one incident, reported to the AD, who then did nothing... but WHY did Paterno not take it further?? If you, as a head coach, heard about a child getting sexually abused by one of your former assistant coaches in YOUR LOCKER ROOM, and your athletic director doesn't take further action, isn't it on you to push the issue?? I just can't see any reason why it has taken this long... it's unacceptable.

That is awful. Unfortunately stuff like this happens more than we'd like to think and nobody does anything about it. In a town about an hour away from my hometown it came out that 4 boys who had been on the high school basketball team had been raping and sexually harassing younger boys on the team and people actually DEFENDED them. It infuriated me.

Ugh...stories like this disgust me and make me so angry. How could someone KNOW that was happening and not do anything about it?

Its so sad, frustrating and scary. That people knew and nothing was done to stop it. I don't even have anything else to say. I don't get how you could know about something like that and not do anything to prevent it.

I think the whole story is just too sad. What's even worse is the people on one of the morning radio shows I listen to were making fun of the boys who were hurt. They said they should've known better. People just don't understand.

I hope people called in and told them off. We should never blame the victims! Talk like that is what prevents people from coming forward. I will never understand why so many people lack compassion for others.

From what I heard, JoePa told the AD. And the AD did nothing.

They are not seeking charges against JoePa.

Here's a good article from Sports Illustrated... Paterno should be, and needs to be, charged with something... HE knew, HE accepted that the administration didn't do anything, and HE allowed Sandusky to continue to be around the Penn State football program after his retirement.

[QUOTE]Everything I've read about this is just awful. After reading the Grand Jury Presentment ( http://www.attorneygeneral.gov/uploadedFiles/Press/Sandusky-Grand-Jury-Presentment.pdf - WARNING - very detailed and unpleasant), I cannot imagine a scenario in which Paterno and the University President should not be held accountable. I'm not familiar with the mandated reporting laws in PA, but I believe they should be revisited to include college administrators and coaching staff, given their contact with minors. I'm also incredibly confused by the actions of the graduate assistant who walked in on Sandusky victimizing a young boy. His first reaction was to call his own father? And then go tell Coach Paterno the next day? What about calling 911, or the police, and reporting the horrendous crime you just witnessed?????
