Its called a semi-mount, setting without the stone in it.  This is where I'm confused, you have a design in mind and the jeweler is going to show it to you?  Or you have a design in mind and going to go look for it?

Just ask what types of shapes the mount will hold?  Sizes the basket (which is where the stone will go) will accommodate.  Prong strength, how many prongs to secure your stone.  Good luck.

EDIT: Karat the gold is, the higher the karats, the softer the gold and more pliable it is.  Also any warranties or things that the jeweler will do for you if your purchase from them.  Sometimes they jeweler will have a cleaning kit or instructions on how to clean your ring at home if you can't bring it to them.

I'm assuming you picked this jeweler because you trust them and/or are happy with the quality of their work. In that case, I wouldn't worry about things like whether or not the prongs can hold the stone. How would you know that anyway if the stone isn't set and you're not a jeweler yourself?

I would focus more on the design, like you said. Do you like the height of the setting? Do you like the thickness of the band? Is it nice and smooth or are there rough edges that need to be fixed? Make sure it's comfortable.
