Ring PIcs plz?

I was wrong... AGAIN (thinking he didn't want marriage)... and boyfriend took me into a local jewelry shop when we were going on a walk Saturday.  We looked at settings and I realllllly like this jewelers, because its where my family has bought jewelry since before I was born and they're very nice people, but they don't have diamonds in the settings for you to look at.  They have diagrams of what a 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 carat diamond looks like in a setting, but they don't have them alredy mounted to try on, just the settings.  Does anyone have pics of their solitaires?  I'm just wondering what the different size diamonds look like on a hand.

That too would depend on your hands.  Some ladies have long slender fingers and some are shorter.  My jeweler had settings without diamonds in it as well.  But they would pull out loose diamonds and with tweezers our jeweler would place the diamond in the setting.  Of course I had to hold really still.  Sometimes they would place the diamond in the line between my ring and middle finger so I get a feel for the size.  I don't think there would be a good judge in size from just looking at the sizes of diamonds on someone hands.  Also the size is over all how heavy it is.  So two diamonds can be the same weight but one can have a bigger face than the other and so it would look bigger.

I hope that you and your BF have fun looking at settings and that you find the perfect one for you.

It is really going to depend on the size of your finger.

    What size do you wear?

My ring finger is a 6.75, so my ring might look ridiculous on someone who has a size 4 or 5 ring finger.

The shape of the diamond makes a difference, too.  Do you know what shape you want?

Round diamonds typically look the largest.  A 1 carat round appears significantly bigger than a 1 carat princess, cushion, etc.  I have a 2 ct cushion, but I would have stayed under 1.5 if I'd gone for a round.

DH wanted to buy me close to a carat. I tried one on (I've got long, thin fingers) and, to me, it looked like costume jewelry. We ended up going with a half...that's considered small for some, but it suited what my tastes and looked far more appropriate on my hand to me.

You should really try them on and see how they look on your hand. If the store you want to purchase from doesn't have that option available to you, go to chain jeweler and try rings on there. It's incredibly hard to judge what will look right on you to you until you have it on your hand.

I guess I should maybe go to a chain store where stuff is already mounted, just to try on different carats.

I don't have any pics of my rings on my hands, but here's some shots of the rings themselves...

Another thought is, try them on as a set (e-ring and wedding band). The wedding band can totally change the look of your e-ring. When I paired my band up with my e-ring, it made the center stone look bigger/more prominent (in a good way), but I didn't know it would until I tried them on as a pair.

Elle - I don't remember seeing a pic of your ring. Could you AW it please? Innocent

lkp797 - It really does depend on your finger size, your finger shape and your personal preference. Deciding on a shape of stone makes a difference too, as Elle said. Also, what kind of budget do both you and your BF feel comfortable with? Personally, I would prefer a smaller diamond of better quality than a larger diamond that looks like rock salt, but again, it's all about personal preference.

ETA: I say "both" not because you should feel you can increase BF's comfortable price. I say "both" because when BF and I discussed the budget issue, he had a number in his head that was much higher than I felt comfortable wearing on my hand daily. I was flattered that he felt I deserved that, but it was almost triple where my comfortable budget was.

In all honesty, I think that your BF needs to figure out his budget before you figure out what size center stone you like/want.  Maybe I missed that part or you left it out.  However, the budget for all of those sizes varies a ton and varies even more when you get into the other factors of a diamond.

When we went ring shopping, we looked at settings and I tried on several.  We narrowed it down to 3 that were my favorites.  My husband chose the final setting and the center stone.  I was not comfortable telling him how much $ he should spend on the ring and trusted his judgement when it came to the center stone.  Then again, I tried to  convince him that I didn't need a ring.

ETA to add my ring, because what girl can resist showing off her frosting

[QUOTE]I'm a ring size 6.5, but I have really slender fingers, and anything over 1/2 looked ridiculous on to me.  Mine is a 1/3 with a small diamond halo.  The 2mm band helps to make it look even more impressive I think.  <strong>Width counts.</strong>

    That's what she said.

I do agree that the daintier the band, the more prominent it makes the center stone.  I gravitated towards bands with less metal.

And I love, love, love your find the ring picture.  It seems so romantic to me because of all of the soft colors.

Mutley & Sunbird, your rings are gorgeous!

Mutley, I think I remember you saying your side stones are prong set, right? Do you find that they get caught on stuff any more than just the prongs around your centre stone?

Sunbird, do you still have an etsy shop or a website? I would love to window shop your stuff :)

They are petite prong set, so they are smaller then traditional prongs.

Not sure if this will show the prongs better.

    <a href="#" title="Click to view a larger photo" onclick="return gSiteLife.LoadForumPage('ForumImage', 'plckPhotoId', '866be6a8-13b5-4cfb-8f57-48933cb04279', 'plckRedirectUrl', gSiteLife.EscapeValue(window.location.href));"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/6/15/866be6a8-13b5-4cfb-8f57-48933cb04279.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>

It is somewhat between being micropave and the larger prong set side stones.  I really loved the micropave settings but the jeweler said that petite prongs are better at keeping the stones in.

They don't get caught on anything.  It is actually a rare occasion that I've ever got my center stone caught on anything.  And I've never scratched Gavin.  (For some reason, I get asked that a lot.)

ETA: This might be better since it is from the jeweler's site.

Width definitely matters, in rings as well as other things. ;)

I have thinner bands, but b/c of how they crisscross, and b/c there are three of them, I think my center stone (1 ct) tends to look a bit smaller. But I'm happy with my setting and bands b/c they suit my finger shape.

My ring size is 6.5, and I have small hands with short fingers.

I have a 3/4 carat equivalent (6mm Lannyte) on a size 5.25 ring. I have a criscross style similar to Desert's. When I first got it, I had a 6.5mm/1-ct equivalent stone, and I thought it was too big.

FI also had a ring budget 3X what I was comfortable with. We compromised on a lower number, so I have a somewhat expensive setting with an inexpensive center stone.

Here is a pic. I wear a 5.75 in ring size.

But FI bought it as a wedding set and they gave him a deal for it. That's not my hand its FI's fingers and he took with his camera phone.  The side of the band taper when it meets the center stone and each side has 7 small stones.  The wedding band is cut to fit the e-ring.  The stone is just a hair over a carat.  The side have filigree on it.  I do have a question, ladies are your wedding bands soldered together or still separate?

I feel like Mutley and I have a good contrast to show how ring size/band size matters. My fingers are a size 3.5 and I think my ring has a 1/4 karat center stone.

Mutley's stone is obviously bigger but my hands are so darn small it makes my stone look a lot bigger than it is.

Moto, lovin' the sparkle and detail work.  My bands are not soldered together.  I like being able to wear my wedding band alone at times.  Plus I may have to in the future because I think that my e-ring will tear gloves.
