Venue dilemma (WR, obviously)

FI and I have been looking at/researching venues and we're getting a little frustrated.  Because I live in the middle of nowhere, all the places that are even remotely nice charge you egregious amounts of money and require that you use their vendors, etc.

My mother has always envisioned my wedding reception happening in their back yard, and I've been hesitant about that for a while because renting a nice tent makes it just as expensive as doing a venue, and other than that, we don't really have a backup plan for in case it rains.  Don't get me wrong, they have a GORGEOUS back yard:

Their walk-out basement is on its way to being finished, and they can wait on putting anything in it until after the wedding.  They have a gigantic, pretty basement as well (totally finished, will have cork flooring at the time of the wedding, lots of lovely windows and double doors), and it occurred to me that as long as there was nothing in the basement, if the weather was bad we could just move everything inside.  Basically, it would just be the empty room with all our decorations in it.

So my questions for you ladies are these: is this tacky/gross?  What are your thoughts?

Re: Venue dilemma (WR, obviously)

  • I think it sounds lovely as long as you enough room for everyone.  One of my favorite weddings that I've ever attended was at the bride's parents' house.
  • LOVE the idea. Not tacky at all.
Used to be bourgehm. +1,500 posts. Silly knot

  • Not tacky. I say go for it (as long as there is room for everyone).

  • Definitely not tacky. Sounds gorgeous.

  • Space isn't an issue.  Their basement is seriously bigger than some of the venues we looked at.

This is where we're looking at having the ceremony if we choose to do it this way:
