Helping to motivate each other

Alright... So, I thought we'd each start out by saying what we need help being motivated with...

I'm currently working on a dissertation. I just started, so I'm at the beginning stages. My very generic topic at this point is physician-patient communication and mistake disclosure. So, I'm currently finding, printing, reading, and taking notes on articles. My goal for this week is to have 100 articles read (I'm on number 62).

PS... We need a name for our group!

PS... If you don't want to give a ton of details on your research that is fine :)

I already presented my idea at our national conference and my paper is floating around on the internet somewhere :) So, the cat is out of the bag for me. I just need to prove my model is a good one and actually works at this point!

The rest of this semester is about conquering Family Health Promotion and Pharmacology with an emphasis on family needs.

This week: I have a quiz and a discussion board that I need to do tomorrow by 4pm.

Name Idea: Why Families Need Drugs

I just need general motivation.  I have to head to the museum next week to collect more data (blah, mostly because it sucks up gas and travel time...), and I have an organic test on Tuesday and a calc test on Wednesday.

Oh, and my other research project (I'm terrorizing live fishies with their alarm pheromones) was a big fat pile of fail yesterday.  I did a test run and got zero reaction from them.  No hiding, nothing.

Things I've accomplished this week: ALMOST done with a funding request for a conference this summer.  I also made the decision to go to grad school.  That one's been plaguing me since we got engaged.

EDIT: Wow, I apparently am more exhausted than I thought.  I thought Nursey needed a name for her discussion board.  Name idea for the group?  I'll come back to this.

Raven, I'm a lowly undergrad too.  Although only for the next 44 days.  And then I'm a grad student.  Which doesn't feel possible.

Raven/Peekabo..... I'm not sure what I am going to do with myself when I graduate from grad school. Maybe I'll go back for something else and be a perpetual student. Hell, that way I won't have to start paying on my loans!

Nurse.... I have thought about being a perpetual student too!  :)  Not a bad idea but one needs some money to do that!

Raven - enjoy it while it lasts.  I feel like I blinked and they're about to hand me a degree.  It doesn't make sense in my head.

Nursey - The plan is to get my PhD and do a post doc and then get a tenure track position at a university teaching biology so that I can do research.  We'll see how that works out.  Between my loans and FI's loans, we're in debt up to our eyeballs.

Nursey-Sadly FASFA is not my friend right now :(  Currently my age and my parents income make me a government no no.  But that is okay.  I don't need it right now.  In a year I will but until that comes I am not going to worry about it. :D  I am glad that FASFA is a friend to grad students :)

hahahahahahaha I wish.  I've been out of class since 3:30 and have done absolutely nothing.  That's 9 hours of procrastination.  Wow, that looks much worse written down here than it sounded in my head.  I think it's bedtime for me.   I have to help set up a lab practical for the munchkins (freshmen) in the morning.  A little piece of me dies inside every time they have a practical.  They're not hard, you should do better than a 30%.  They've only had pre-practicals (about half the size of tomorrow's) so far, and our grade range has been between 6% and 100% (only 1 person got a 100), so I'm shuddering at what the grades are going to be tomorrow.  Especially since the majority has scored in the 30's.  Bah.  And it's things like this that make me question whether or not I really want to teach.

    RIGHT?!?!!

I spent last fall assisting in running a lab for nursing students (and by lab I mean talking manikins for them to run through scenarious). The students either asked me questions I had no clue (thus felt stupid) or asked me questions that they should know (thus I had a hard time not making them feel stupid). That was when I realized that working with fresh meat (freshmen) might not be for me. I've started looking into "what else can I do with my MSN????"

I think my favorite so far has been when they were studying.  I hang out with them on Monday nights to answer questions so they can study for their practicals.  They were studying for plants, and we have a smattering of different plants in the lab, and they were running through phyla and genera.  And one girl looked at me, touched a cycad and said "So this is chlorophyta?"  WHAT?!  Did you bother to read your lab?  Chlorophyta=green algae!!!!!  She then proceeded to touch every plant on the cart and guess chlorophyta.  There's no helping some people.

Of course undergrads can join in :) Everyone needs motivation in some part of their life!

Lauren... What is your candidacy process like? We had to write a prelim paper (basically a lit review with hypotheses) and take 10 hours of written tests and 2 hours of oral tests. I got sick during the time and ended up losing a semester. Good luck!

Good luck to all of you ladies.  My school is on Spring Break, but I work anyways so its really not a spring break for me.  I just need to get motivated to finish my grad paper so that I can finally get out of school!  Slowly chipping away.  All the research and work is done, now to tie it all together and write it up.  Perhaps hearing you guys making progress will motivate me to do so.

    Things I've accomplished today:

Funding application for meeting (needs to be signed, scanned and emailed)
Went to lab (hooray! Although I just realized I totally forgot to feed my fish.  FAIL)
Letter of Intent - Sent for Proofreading

    Things Still To Accomplish:
    All my freaking homework.  Crap.
