Food Restrictions/ "Weird" Food Choices

I was reading this article (click) about restaurants refusing to serve or sell a certain food item. Some restaurants even refuse to omit certain ingredients because it messes with "perfection". One restaurant on the West Coast did have any salt or pepper in the dining room because the chef believed he "achieved perfect seasoning" while cooking.

This got me thinking, I'd have a horrible time at restaurants like that. I have weird food restrictions and if I wanted my (veggie) burger without cheese, I better get it that way! And I love me some salt and pepper. It doesn't mean that the food wasn't cooked well, I just like taste of salt and pepper much more than the average person.

The most obvious example of my food restrictions would be my vegetarian diet. I need to know if my soup was cooked in chicken stock or if the beans were cooked with ham. I so much appreciate it when my servers are understanding of my restrictions and try to help me out, and I hope I don't come off as offensive.

Another example is if BF and I eat breakfast, he cannot have ketchup on his eggs. I don't eat eggs anymore, but I grew up eating them and my family always put ketchup on our eggs!! Who doesn't like ketchup on their eggs?!

Anyone else have "weird" food restrictions? Is there anything commonly eaten that you're repulsed by, or is there something strange you eat yourself? My mom is a big fan of pickle and peanutbutter sandwiches....and that's quite strange!

    Me. Gross.

If you ask for something to be left off of your food, I don't see what the big deal is for the restaurant, but in the other hand, I guess they don't have to if they don't want to.

I don't like ketchup period.  It weirds me out.

Stillwell and I are gluten free, which is pretty restrictive.  I mean, you cut out all wheat, barley, rye (and most oats based on cross contamination issues) and you tell us how that goes for you.  It's crazy what they put in food these days.

That being said, I'm usually not picky when I eat.  Other than my issue.  Usually because I feel like I've already been too much of a pain.  :)

Ketchup on eggs is gross! I only eat eggs that are cooked over-easy with salt and a ton of black pepper and served on toast. I never ask the server or cook to put them on the toast though. I just move them over once the food comes.

I bought a book about how to make sushi and it mentioned that it's offensive to sushi chefs when you mix wasabi in with soy sauce. Apparently, they feel as though they've created the perfect balance of flavoring, so adding extra spice is a huge faux pas. That means I've been offending sushi chefs like crazy...along with almost every other American out there!

I am a vegetarian as well, so no soup with beef stock or chicken stock.  I ask to make sure rices aren't cooked in chicken broth or anything like that either.  Also two weeks ago at the doctor I found out I was lactose intolerant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just take lactaid pills before eating dairy but now I have to worry about that before I eat any dairy too.

I'm shocked at the lack of love for ketchup and ketchup on eggs! What's a breakfast sandwich without eggs and ketchup?!

Danser, that nearly makes you a vegan! I had a vegetarian lactose intolerant friend.
It's going to push you to be healthier, I'm sure. Think of it as a good think :)

I have a lot of food restrictions. The worst is pickles (the preservatives often make me sick - I don't really get it, but whatever). A lot of restaurants put pickles on everything, which clearly doesn't work for me. I'm also lactose intolerant and allergic to peanuts. BF can't have tomatoes (although he sometimes eats them anyway), peanuts, or shellfish (which means no sushi because of cross contamination). Combined we're kind of a nightmare to cook for, although we're pretty good at cooking for oursevles and being cogniscent of one anothers sensitivities. Not being able to have peanut butter is a real downer when it comes to making lunches. Everyone else just packs PB&J. Not us. We do eat nutella, but honestly, it's not that great. You also have to be super careful when buying granola bars. Oh, and ketchup on eggs is majorly nasty. Same with ketchup on KD (which I'm not supposed to eat either way). There are lots of other things I dislike, but avoiding the foods I can't eat is a first priority.

I can't have dairy or eggs because I'm allergic. I can't even have dairy or eggs in bread products. Plus I have a lot of issues with food textures.
