I Need an Audition Song!

I noticed it's helped other girls here in the past, so why not me? =)

I'm auditioning for an original musical at my alma mater on Monday. The audition notice asked us to prepare a ballad and an uptempo - but it doesn't mention if they want Broadway or pop or whatever, so I'm going to take it as carte blanche.

FI is a musician and is helping me prepare. My ballad is going to be "Drops of Jupiter" by Train but we are having MAJOR disagreements on my uptempo.

I originally wanted to sing Amy Winehouse's version of "Valerie", but during rehearsal, FI told me I was singing off-key. Rather than work on getting me ON key, he told me we should pick a new song. This is the list of rejected songs:

"Dog Days are Over" - Florence and the Machine
"I'm Yours" - Jason Mraz
"Marry You" - Bruno Mars
"Just The Way You Are" - Bruno Mars
"Rolling in the Deep" - Adele (I was good up until that damn chorus!)
"Out Tonight" - RENT
"All My Loving" - The Beatles
"Don't Let Me Down" - The Beatles
"I've Just Seen a Face" - The Beatles
"Help!" - The Beatles

There's probably more I'm forgetting, we went through so many last night.

I'm an alto and open to pretty much anything; it just has to be able to be played on a piano. Procuring sheet music is also a nonissue.

Thanks in advance!

Out Tonight is my favorite song from Rent :)

Hmm...Popular from Wicked MIGHT be uptempo, but I'm not sure if it shows enough range/power.

But Honey, Honey and Money, Money from Mamma Mia are awesome and might show power (maybe not range.)

I have no idea.  What about Chicago by Kate Voegele?  It's kinda amazing.

    Good luck!

For uptempo maybe something by Ingris Michaelson (Everybody)

You could try another song by Adele or Florence. I'm an alto too so it can be hard but "My boy buids coffins" or "Set Fire to the Rain" tend to work for me...at karaoke. I don't know if they count as uptempo but I'm sure you could do a fabulous arrangement :)

Tori Amos - Sweet dreams or Happy Phantom would be good too. Sheet music for Tori is easy to find.

I Have Confidence - The Sound of Music
You Can't Get a Man with a Guy - Annie Get Your Gun
I Enjoy Being a Girl - Flower Drum Song
The Wizard and I - Wicked
"How Can Love Survive?" from THE SOUND OF MUSIC

    HTHs!

What's the issue on the "Rolling in the Deep" chorus, does it go too high? I'm just trying to get a sense of your range.

    "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar
"What is this Feeling" from Wicked would be fun if you only need a short portion prepared (to get around the fact that it's a duet)
"You Had Me" by Joss Stone
"Take Me or Leave Me" from Rent
"Good N Evil" from Jekyll & Hyde

Yeah, it's a little too high. I can't quite nail that note without cracking. I'm okay with the pre-chours and the build-up, but when it gets to "We could have had it all...", I just can't seem to get it out.

Maybe if I warm up more...

You can definitely try to improve your upper range by doing scales and vocal exercises daily. But it you don't have a lot of time before the audition, I would recommend sticking to something you know you can nail, so you don't worry about it.

What type of a musical is it?  If it's similar to an older type musical pick something that matches the era like rogers and hammerstein.  If it is a pop/rock type show pick something from Rent or even The Who's Tommy.  Something with a belt if you can belt.  I would even ask if they prefer musical theater or not, they may prefer that.  I have found unless asked most auditions require a musical theater type song.

Break a leg, feel free to PM me with any advice or for more song suggestions.
