Do Not Play List

Just wondering what songs played at weddings make you think WTF (like they don't belong to weddings)? Just curious.
One of them that I can think from the top of my head is "I'll Survive".

I love old, cheesy, goofy songs. But any inappropriate lyrics (a lot of rap/hip-hop/pop songs) always make me give a side-eye to whoever is in charge of the music

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the chicken dance. This should only be for children's birthday parties.

I don't love the Cupid Shuffle, either. Too easy of a dance and the guy's voice is annoying.

YMCA has been done to death.

But I'm on board with the Cha Cha slide.

I do not know the Electric Slide, but I wish I did.

Anything that has a dance that goes along with it.  No hokey pokey, chicken dance, electric slide, line dances...none of it.

At FI's company Christmas party this weekend, there was music and dancing after the requisite cocktails and dinner.  There was a song that had a dance that we had never seen in our lives, but the younger folks were tearing it up in lines.  It was sort of cute, but being in the group that doesn't know a dance is a little awkward.

Chicken Dance, Macarena, Hokey Pokey, Electric Slide, The Hustle, etc.

Then anything talks about break-ups or other 'love sucks' kind of songs.  It may be a good song, but really...it's a wedding, gotta be all about the love.

At my company's Christmas Parties, YMCA is always played and people are dragged to the dance floor and have to wear hats, helmets, feathers, etc. To make matters worse, my coworkers have no clue how to dance.

I've heard "It's Raining Men" as a bouquet toss song! I thought about it, but used "Eye of the Tiger" instead.

And we totally played "Bad Romance" at my wedding b/c my H and I are both into Gaga. :)

But I tried to avoid anything overly sappy like "I loved her first" or "My heart will go on."

Apparently for a while there, You're Beautiful by James Blunt was one of the top wedding songs in the UK. Made absolutely not sense. It's all about loving a girl you saw once and will never get a chance to be with! How is that a good first dance song??

I once heard "The Lollipop Song" at a wedding... I gave that one major side-eye.

It wasn't the "lollipop, lollipop, Oh lolli-lolli-lolli" one...

I dont care for the chicken dance and macarena either but I am also not a big fan of only lovey songs being played. Once the ceremony is over and it is time to dance, anything upbeat works. except for inapropriate rap songs. I love I will survive. its a fun song to sing.

My BF is very traumatized by "It's Raining Men". He heard a male coworker singing it in karaoke, as I mentioned in another post.

I would play some of Lady Gaga. Love almost all of the songs, but I believe Bad Romance is not the most appropriate for weddings. I wouldn't mind line dance as long as I wouldn't have to dance since I really suck at line dancing.

There are so many songs either BF or I absolutely hate that I imagine it's probably best to just do an iPod wedding so we can create the playlist ourselves.

Anything too sappy, like Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (along with that, anything easily recognizable from a movie).

Anything that is about a breakup.

Anything that would make my grandmother blush (there's probably about a dozen artists that would go on the DNP list because of this).

I'm not so opposed to the dance songs, but I don't really care either way.  I have a feeling BF will hate them, but we'll see.

Thankfully, our DJ is awesome and puts up with my anal-retentive music requests. When we hired him, I flat out told him I was going to be very picky/specific about what music got played, and his response was "considering you're going to make my job a whole lot easier, I'm game". Rock on.

Our current Do Not Play List:

    Macarena
    Chicken Dance
    Hokey Pokey
    Electric Slide
Anything Kesha, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Faith Hill

Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back
    Sean Kingston - Fire Burning
    Flo Rida - Low
    Sugarland - Stuck Like Glue
Faith Hill/Tim McGraw - Your Love
Keith Urban - Making Memories of Us
    Lonely Island - I'm On a Boat*

    * Note that I actually wanted this on our must play list. However, I was told (in no uncertain terms) that my mother would kill me if we played it. I have to put it on the Do Not Play because I know about 10 people that would specifically request it.

Lady Gaga "Telephone" may or may not be on our playlist... Innocent

We had people request "I'm On A Boat" and the DJ came to ask me about it, and I was drunk enough at that point that I was like "Yeah, whatever." He was like, "It's filthy. Are you sure?" And I said, "It's fine."

I don't think anyone paid attention to the lyrics except the people who already knew them.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Also, I don't even know the right name of this song, but I call it the Bed Rock song, and I hate it. HATE IT. It was also on our DNP list.

I will politely disagree with GPB because I think Bon Jovi is always appropriate.  =)

I don't have a "no way" list yet, but I think it would contain:
Any "group dance" songs (Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey, etc)
    Any rap
Anything marked explicit or contains the "Parental Advisory" logo
Any country, unless it's the pop adult contemporary kind like Taylor Swift
That Enrique Iglesias song right now that annoys the sh!t outta me
    Any Celine Dion

    ETA: Beyonce - "Single Ladies"

I think it would be easier to hand someone an "okay to play" list because I'm pretty picky about music.
  • edited December 2011
    Before he cheats- Carrie Underwood
    Stay- Sugarland

These are two songs that I think should not be played at a wedding along with the chicken dance of course.

I don't really care if a song has lyrics that aren't necessarily wedding appropriate if they're dance songs that will get people up and dancing.  Mainly I wouldn't want the Chicken Dance or Who Let the Dogs Out of the ones commonly listed.  Other than that, I'm not overly picky.

My bigger concern would be that all of the songs that sound like they belong in a club with dirty lyrics and/or swearing not be played for the first hour or two of dancing.  My grandmother might freak if I had songs with obviously suggestive lyrics while she was there, so I figure the later in the night that kind of music comes on, the better.

Wow...this thread has me thinking about this more and more.  Basically, there will be no current Top 40 pop, rap, or country.  The play list will be heavy on classic rock, Motown, and older pop/hip hop.

We so rarely listen to top 40 radio that we probably won't have a very "up to date" song list...but our friends are the same way.  Anyone else a big fan of Siruis/XM?

I don't know if it's just my PA-Dutch familia, but I learned to polka at a very young age because of weddings.

    Seriously.  We polka.  At weddings.

Needless to say, my future wedding will have NO polka.  I don't care who says what.  In this situation, I'm a pretty princess and I say NO POLKA.  BF agrees.  I will take NO money from anyone who insists on polka-ing, since I know that if they pay, they have say.  So there.  No polka.  Period.

Did I make that clear enough?  Hahhaa
