WR - Hotels for OOT guests

My FFIL called me yesterday right before I was about to leave for work, so I didn't get to talk with him at length, but he was calling to ask for information on hotels that would be here in town and where we would like the OOT guests (namely, Steven's family) would be staying.

He told me that he would like to book early, that way they can make sure everyone is together and that the rates don't jump higher the closer it gets to the date.

My question is this: Everyone I've spoken to on FI's side of the family are talking about the situation like they fully intend to be the ones paying for the hotel rooms. However, I was under the impression that it's my duty to make sure I accomodate our OOT guests, especially since they're paying for plane tickets. I imagine there will really only need to be 3 rooms for 3-4 nights.

I think they feel it's their responsibility to pay for their stay (since they're not contributing to the wedding, which was originally agreed upon because they're already doing so much with our upcoming living arrangements), but I feel like it's my duty because they're already paying so much just to come into town for the wedding.

Advice? I'm fairly certain it won't completely break the bank, but it will leave very little left for the things I haven't booked yet (photographer, caterer, officiant/marriage license/legal stuffs).

  • No, IMO, if a guest chooses to fly in for the wedding, then it is up to them to take care of their accomodations.  Setting up a block of rooms at a hotel at a discounted rate is a nice gesture, but not required.

The only exception is your bridal party - it's in good taste to take care of them if you can.

  • I'm with Nursey. Part of the expense of going to an OOT wedding is the flight AND the hotel. If you can afford to pay for the accommodations for your WP, that's great, but not expected. We got a discounted rate at a hotel and gave everyone the information... the end.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I guess I wouldn't feel so obligated if it wasn't FI's mother, father, and sister, but I am happy to hear that that's one less thing to worry about. There's a couple of hotels in the area that offer discounted rates with a AAA membership (which I have) so hopefully I can at least do that much for them.

I would also like to have little gift baskets for their rooms, especially since none of them are acquainted very will with the south and our heat/humidity. Maybe some suncreen thrown in there as well as a cute little fan for his mom, lol.
