Not Engaged Yet

So what are you reading?

About to go on vacation and looking to download a few books to the kindle before I go.  Any reccomendations? Any books to avoid?  The only type of book I really don't read are sappy romance novels.

I miss the NEY book club.

I appreciate any suggestions. I'll be back later,
Have a great day!

Re: So what are you reading?

  • I'm in the middle of 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children'.  It's cute.

I'm also planning on re-reading HG before next Friday :)

If you like HG, by the way, 'Divergent' was really good.

  • I've been reading the Game of Thrones series.  I'm on the second book "Clash of Kings" - it's good, I'm quite fond of Bran and Arya, a few of the other characters are fun to read about too.
  • I'm also reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series, but I'm still on A Game of Thrones right now. I absolutely love it and Tyler and I have already decided that if we have a daughter, her name is going to be Arya because she's so badass (though that is slightly awkward because the computer system at work is Aria, so hopefully my coworkers wouldn't think I'm naming it after our horribly buggy system).

That is awesome.  I've had suggestions from my gaming group to get a few characters from the series into our campaign.  Though your (pl.) idea is amazing.
  • I'm reading "The Remains of the Day."  It was recommended to me by a friend.  It's ok so far, but it's getting better.
  • I'm still finishing a couple lighter series from my vacation, right now I'm reading Changeless (Book 2 of the Parasol Protectorate Series) and it's taking a while because I'm not really digging it.

I also read the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning on my vacation too and I actually really liked that one.  It's 5 books and you don't get any real sort of answers or resolution until the end, but somehow that makes it seem better.  The main characters are pretty well written and have good development throughout the series and it's an interesting take on the fantasy/faery topic.  I enjoyed them.

If you want some cutesy teen-ish romance (not sappy), try the Anna/Lola books.  They were really light reads and cute, but obviously not overstimulating, which I liked for vacation.

  • I'm currently reading a hulking novel called "A Widow for One Year", by John Irving. It's about a children's author and his estranged wife over the course of many years, beginning with the summer he hires a teenaged assistant who looks like his dead son, who subsequently ends up having an affair with his wife. It's dark, with a lot of sex and quite a bit of humor. I don't know if asn't of you ever recall me talking about a movie called "The Door in the Floor", but this book is what that movie was based on.

  • I second the recommendation of "Divergent."

I also read the first two books of the Fever series. I should get back to that. Do you like things related to the zombie apocalypse? Hollowland by Amanda Hocking was pretty good, and it's free on Kindle.

These are also free and were good enough for me to get the next books in the series:
Jenny Pox by JL Bryan - another YA paranormal series
Reckless Magic by Rachel Higginson - a teen witch sort of series

Hmm...I seem to have been on a YA paranormal tear of late, but I mostly just cruise the Kindle freebies.

Tyler wants a kid named Mishra... but that's from a Magic novel, so... we're gonna have to have intense discussions about that naming possibility :|.

  • Alyaki- Don't get too attached to the characters!  I promise you will thank me later.  lol

I am reading the series that Desert and Leia I think recommended me.  I am on the Amelia Peabody book 2 the curse of the Pharaoh.  I love it :) I am so hooked on this series.

Me too! I'm thinking I'm going to try Divergent when I'm done though.

  • I'm finishing the third HG book right now - Mockingjay.  I burned through the first two really fast and am reading the last one slowly.  I don't want it to end!!

I think I'm going to read The Descendents next.  My mom read it and said it was really good.  I usually don't read too much fiction but so far that's all I've read this year!  Enjoying a little something different.
  • I love these suggestions, thank you! I'm going to have to look as these on amazon tonight :-)
