Do you like rose gold?

BF and I have been talking about metals... everything I have now is white gold, but I'm not one to match my metals anyway. I was thinking that I really like yellow gold, but he brought up rose gold. I've never actually seen it on someone's finger, just pictures of the jewelry on the internet.  I know its from adding copper... does it still hold up the way yellow gold does?

I actually wanted a rose gold ring, I'm thinking that it should be fine. Gold jewelry is alloyed with another metal anyways. Gold is actually really soft.

I believe that it will be slightly softer than yellow because of the addition of copper, which is very soft.

Personally, I like rose gold better than yellow gold (but white gold the best).  Whether or not it looks good on you probably depends on your skin tone.

It terms of the appearance of rose gold, I personally think it's pretty...not what I would want in an e-ring (I'm a white gold girl at heart), but on the right person, it would probably look gorgeous.

As for durability, you'd probably want to talk to a jeweler to find out how durable it is compared to straight gold. I imagine it depends on what quality of gold they mix with it - 14K and 18K gold is going to be stronger than 24K.

From what I know, it is softer than yellow or white gold.  I think unless it's right next to yellow gold it looks too much like yellow gold to me (I'm a white gold girl), but that's just my personal opinion. I think if you like yellow gold, you should just go with it--but I would talk to a jeweler to get the facts on the upkeep and such, this is just what I remember from ring shopping over a year ago.

I actually like rose gold more than yellow gold. I like that it's kind of different, but not completely in-you-face different.. if that makes sense.

Either way, it's not my decision. I have a feeling that he's going to go with one of his grandmother's rings (which i think is so cool) and he just likes talking about different options with me to throw me off.

I saw a rose gold ring with black diamonds and it was so cool looking.  I mean, I love pink and black together, so it was kind of a no-brainer. But I was really suprised at how much I loved it.

rose gold would be gorgeous on an e-ring (I'm a white gold girl at heart). I had a friend who prefers rose gold and wears it all the time.

I like it. Not to wear everyday, but it is nice. That is what my grandma's locket is made of that I am wearing on my wedding day. I personally think that rose gold has an antique look to it.

Like loopy, I have some heirloom jewelery that is rose gold and it's really pretty. I don't wear it though because I'm more of a silver and white gold girl.

Everyone else has commented on strength.

I think someone else already mentioned this, but I would suggest looking at a rose gold and a yellow gold ring side by side to see which you really prefer, and try them both on your hand, because sometimes your skin tone can really change how you feel about it.

Rose gold is super popular for wedding bands here in Germany, and while I have never tried it on, I love the look. But I'm also so white I'm practically blue, so I think warmer metals look better on me. If your skintone was very tan, I don't know if the color would be as noticable? Like everyone else said, I'd try it on. Out fo curiosity, is it a "traditional" engagement ring in rose gold, like with a stone? I've only seen it in bands and earrings, and if you happen to have a link, I'd love to do some vicarious jewelry shopping....

Yeah, definitely something with a stone.. I haven't actually found too many of them, and none with diamonds (which i'm find with, but BF feels like it would make him look cheap... whatever.)

I'm not super tan, but I'm not really white either. I guess I have a little more of a light olive skin tone.

This is what I've found (sorry, pic heavy)

I like the amethyst rings. I think they look good with the rose gold.

I love white gold but I really like the look of rose gold. You don't see many e-rings in rose gold and it would be different but I think very pretty.

If you were wanting rose gold with a diamond(s) I bet you could go to a custom jeweler to get this.

A friend of mine has a rose gold wedding set.

It's not my taste, but she loves it and hasn't had any problems with it due to the relative "softness" of the metal after about 4 years of marriage.

I can ask where they bought it, if you like, but I have a feeling any reputable jeweler would be able to find you or custom make you whatever you wanted. :)

Those rings are gorgeous! But what are they sparklies if they're not diamonds? This is why I'm not so sold on the "diamond is forever" jazz - you can't tell the difference unless you're trained, or so it seems to me. I personally like the amethyst ones best - what a striking color combo!
  • edited December 2011
I really like the amethyst ones too.  The first three are morganite. It's like a 7.5 on that hardness scale, so it's perfect for everyday wear. Although it won't look like diamonds, its more of a peachy color.  I really like it though.

Ooh I love the morganite and rose gold.  They look so good together.  There's actually a fairly affordable one on overstock.com that I'm tempted to get.  Morganite is just a pink aquamarine.  Or a pink emerald too I guess.

As far as the diamond thing goes vs. another gemstone, my dad is a geologist and goes on rants all the time about how diamonds aren't the most naturally rare stone, wouldn't cost near as much if they were traded on the open market and not monopolized etc etc. And I liked the peachiness of the stones - I thought they were diamonds that had some yellowness/pinkness to them. It really doesn't matter as long as you like how it looks and it means something to you.

ooh Ana, you're a geologist, right? Is it actually true about diamonds not being the rarest stones, or is that my dad's BS? I always wondered if it was just a way to get out of buying them...

Haha yeah I agree with your dad.  They're not the rarest.  Colored diamonds are pretty rare though.

Edit:  I mean natural colored diamonds.  A lot of colored diamonds are artificially enhanced.

Great! Some more leverage to share with BF as to why he doesn't have to buy me a diamond. ;)

I'm allergic to rose gold and yellow gold so I'm not much of a help. But from the pictures I saw, it looks pretty
