Pnina Tornai dresses...

...specifically the ones that look this this:

Discuss.

(My personal feelings on these dresses [the ones with the see through corsets. Some of her dresses I really do love, but these are the ones I see most often purchsed on SYTTD] is that they're as tacky as tacky gets and BF and I cry out in pain whenever someone puts one on when we watch SYTTD).

I don't really have a problem with the see-through corset thing.  It's not my style, and I think it'll end up being one of those "what-were-you-thinking" type fashions, but it doesn't really irritate me when it.

On the other hand, I think it's strange to pair a transparent corset with a big poofy skirt.  They just don't seem to match.  The risque corset suggests edgy and modern to me, while the big skirt is all Victorian and princessy.  Am I the only one who thinks that?

I find it funny that every girl who says, "I want a unique dress, something that no one else has" ends up with a Pnina Tornai. Of course, on Say Yes to the Dress, it ends up being about 80% of the brides who get one!

Yeah, I'm not too big on the whole see through belly thing. I hate to say this, but it seems like something that's more meant for the bedroom... =/ I do think a lot of her dresses are really pretty, just not something that I envision for a wedding dress.

I always think it's for the slutty girls who want their princess day.  It's just trashy, to be honest.  I wouldn't try one on if it was free.

I do not like them at all. I agree with Jordyana...it looks more like lingerie to me. Why would you want your family/grandparents/FIs family seeing you in that on your wedding day? I just don't think it's appropriate attire for the event...but maybe that's just me. Obviously some girls like that sort of thing.

Elle, I think it's a weird clash of styles too.

I don't like them. I do think it's trashy. I remember there was one girl once who wanted the WHOLE dress to be see-through (even the bust). And another who got one of this Pnina's with the corset, but it was strapless and a mini dress. That one really looked like something from Victoria's Secret.

I do not like the Pnina dresses at all. I agree with you girls in that they are a little slutty and meant more for the bedroom. The whole see through corest does remind me of lingerie. I couldn't see how anyone could walk down the aisle in a dress like that in front of your family, your FI's family and so forth.

I think they're trashy. There is no reason to be showin' all your goodies on your wedding day, IMO. One woman on there wanted the drop waist to be so low that they HAD to add a lining near the bottom because her freaking hoohah was showing.

Although I did see one where the girl bought a see through one, but got it fully lined, and it looked really nice.

I think to say it's totally trashy is to insult anyone who likes it - and I'm okay with that.  If someone wants to show up nearly naked to a wedding, in something many women would feel uncomfortably exposed even as lingerie, I'm totally on board with saying that's trashy.

Now, if someone likes the style LINED, then that's their call.  I don't think that's trashy, just NMS at all.  But I wouldn't wear a ballgown either, so there's that.

I remember that one.  She stood there with her hands on her hips like she was on a catwalk.  She was a pageant queen or something.  She kept going back to it and finally bought it.

It was cute, but I can't believe she wanted to wear that for a wedding.  It looked like a white ballerina costume.

Agreed. Some of the see through ones would be pretty with a little extra non see through fabric in the mid section. I was actually thinking this when watching SYTTD the other day.
  • edited December 2011
I agree, they're not completely horrible when lined.  I think the 40 or 50 something year old woman who got one in pink (and really, the woman was not the body shape that could pull off one of Pnina's dresses) looked hideous in the dress.

I would never tell a bride (esp on her wedding day) that she didn't look beautiful in her dress, but I my start talking about it on the way home.  I had a friend that was quite plump and very short that chose a strapless dress and a very full skirt complete with pick-ups.  It made her look like a giant marshmallow, but she was still a glowing bride that day.

Not all of her dresses are see through, I think she designs some really pretty dresses. I remember a red one she did that was stunning. I don't think the dresses with the see through tops are white trash though. They aren't my style but if thats what makes someone else feel beautiful or sexy or whatever it is she wants to feel on her wedding day I won't call her a slut ot trashy because why should I care?

And the dresses tend to have a lot of detail on the top that makes them a little less see through.

  • edited December 2011
I don't think I recall if any of the women on Say Yes to the Dress were going to wear their see through corset dresses in a church, but I can't imagine that'd fly. Also, I'd feel weird wearing something that semi-revealing in front of all of my elderly family members, they'd die, and then gossip about it for the next 6,000 years.

I did see one episode where they lined the inside of the corset (but then the dress isn't very different from all the rest of the dresses at Kleinfelds, I think). It did look nicer in my opinion after it was lined on the inside....Oh well! Everyone has a different idea of what they want to look like at their wedding, I just know that I don't regularly wear see through clothing, so on the one day everyone I know is looking at me, I'm going to want to wear something I feel comfortable, and like myself in.

I personally hate them, especially for a wedding dress. I feel that you should be classy on your wedding day and this dress just screams the exact opposite to me.

I can't find a picture of it, but I do know that someone on SYTTD ended up buying a Pnina that I really liked. I had no idea it was a Pnina until the end (I think that was in season one though). I don't like many of her dresses, but that one was awesome.

I dont like most the dresses but I actually loved the corset one - but NOT as a wedding dress. Or if you are going that route at least have a tailored slip or undergarment under it and I think it could be very renaissance classy - as it is it screams trashy as a wedding dress - as a party dress it would be awesome.

I want to know what is going through these women's heads when they want dresses like this.

It's almost as ridiculous as women getting boob jobs for the SOLE PURPOSE of their wedding day.

    Very bizarre human behavior.

Does anyone else remember that episode of SYTTD when a bride was worried about how her "new boobs" would work with her dress? She was going in for a fitting and saying how she had just had her breasts redone...I don't know if that was FOR the wedding specifically, but MAN, was she falling out of that dress!

...If I remember correctly, she also wore a Pnina Tornai. We come full circle.

I thought about that too! One episode I saw the girl was wearing a particularly see through one with her boobies looking like they were sititng on a shelf and they showed her ceremony, which looked like a really traditional Catholic ceremony. It was mind boggling.

Did you guys see the one where a lady who was probably in her 40's with HUGE boobs bought a runway dress for like 20 grand? I think it was a Pnina dress, it was humongously poufy at the bottom, and the top like came to 2 points with bows on them. It was ridiculous in so many ways.

That 40 year old woman had lost her son and deserved whatever she wanted, no matter the price. Usually I would think that spending almost 20 grad on a dress is outragouse bu after hearing that her son died and it was her way of starting over the best she could, I get why she decided on the alaberat dress.
