AW: Furbaby! [PiP]

I'm getting a bunny rabbit! It's my birthday gift from FI. After the infamous I Do Not Want a Cat conversation, talk of a pet died down for awhile. But then FI breeched the subject again, this time with a bunny rabbit. I couldn't resist this. I've raised rabbits before (I had 3 over the course of 8 years) and my last one died around the same time I started college. Now I'm ready to have one again.

This is the "little" guy we're adopting and his name is Dickens (I say "little" because he weighs a whopping 8 pounds!)

He's a "returned adoptee", meaning that someone adopted him a few years ago and then his owner returned him to the shelter because she couldn't care for him anymore (here's his "story", it's a bit sad: http://www.safehavenrr.org/adoptfiles/2010/DickensStory.htm )

We went to visit him at the rescue on Sunday and we fell in love. He sat very still when we petted him and let us cuddle him for quite some time. The foster mother emailed this morning and said that Dickens seemed to react well to us and that we could adopt him officially! He is arriving on Thursday afternoon! =D

Cute bunny! We had 2 bunnies when I was in high school. They lived in our back yard and made tons of tunnels underground. They loved Slurpees.
    I'm not good at feelings.

[QUOTE]YAY!!!! I love rabbits. They rock! He's so cute! I love his name! This day rocks!!!

LOL thanks. His first foster mama was a big literature nut and named him and his siblings after authors. We're welcome to change his name, but we're not sure if we're going to. He's already four, so he's probably used to the name Dickens.

I always wanted a pet bunny, but couldn't cause I never am home enough. I read some where when a bunny jumps and kicks its hind legs up its called a "binky" hahaha. I had a friend who had this huge rabbit with only one ear named Barney. Barney's mom bite off his other ear when he was little. Your furbaby is so cute. Congrats!

Adorable. And I agree, I love the name. He kind of looks like a Charles Dickens, what with the color of his fur...

Lyn - isn't that like cannibalism?! Wow.

Yes, it's called a binky! =) And yes, they can be attention suckers. The foster mother was concerned that FI works a full 40 hours a week and I was looking into getting a job, but once she knew that FI only works 2 minutes from the apartment and could easily come home on his lunch break to check up on Dickens, she was very pleased.

Aww, poor Barney. The mama rabbits can be a little aggressive and have been known to kill their babies accidentally.

Wow! Apparently, house rabbits are living longer than they ever did because their diets have been refined (more hay, less pellets, daily fresh food) and they no longer suggest leaving rabbits outside to live in hutches. My oldest rabbit lived to be 9 but that was six years ago.

When I was single I seriously considered getting a rabbit. I had one in HS, a miniature one named Snowball. My sister once tried to take him on a walk on a leash. As soon as she got outside, he took off. It took us an hour to catch him. It was funny, but a little scary at the time.

Anyway... Dickens is ADORABLE! Congrats Bside! :)

    So cute!!! Congrats!

I had a pet rabbit when I was in college, his name was Sugar. I didn't know anything about bunnies, and I assumed it was a baby girl bunny, since it didn't have anything down there. A few months later, I found out that little boy bunny parts don't drop until about 6 months old. Sugar ended up being a boy :) I didn't change his name, we just called him the transvestite bunny :) I loved him soooo much! I had to have him put down because his teeth grew in crooked, and there was this whole process of having to file down his teeth once a month because they weren't grinding. I cried like a baby at the vet as he was put to sleep. He absolutely LOVED to play with my parents lab. He would play chase with the dog and clean each other. And I'd sing him Sugar Pie Honey Bunch... Awww... Sorry, I'm done reminiscing about my Sugar.
