Hunger Games! Who's addicted?

So I haven't been around recently because well...Hunger Games took over my life. I finished the first one in 5 hours a month or so ago. Finals hit and I had the second and third, but no time to read. Friday night and yesterday, I not only finished the second, but am halfway through the third.

Who else is addicted? (I promise no spoilers on this thread! Especially for people that haven't started reading.)

I was skeptical of the Hunger Games at first. People raved about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I thought that book was absolutely miserable. But I LOVED the Hunger Games. I'm excited for the movie :)

<div>Yeah my friends started reading it a year before me. Then I saw the trailer for the movie. I couldn't pick up the first book fast enough!</div>
  • I've been meaning to get the Hunger Games. I have a bunch of other books to read right now, but maybe I'll get those next.

Beth - I started the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and hated it too (I didn't get more than 1/5 of the way through before I quit)! I'm going to try reading it again, since everyone loves it and I want to give it a fair chance, but ya - so far, not a fan.

  • I really want to read these, and the Girl with The Dragon Tattoo too. All of these will definitely be my next Amazon purchase... can't wait! I've been reading up on the descriptions and reviews... I already know I'll be an addict!

  • I've stayed away currently from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Should I give it a shot? I'm not even sure. I haven't seen any of the movies or anything.

It's still on my Kindle and occasionally I consider picking it back up. I didn't get very far and everyone says you have to get pretty far into it for it to pick up but I have enough boring reading to do for school without forcing myself to get to the interesting part of a book. The trailer for the movie doesn't even interest me. Maybe one day I will read it all the way through though.

<div>FI wants to see the movie, so we'll probably rent it once it comes out. My friend said it was really good, but I think she liked the book too, so that could explain it.</div>

  • I loved the Hunger Games, cannot wait to go see the movie, and really hope they don't mess it up.

As far as Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, it literally takes like 150 pages for it to get good. I enjoyed it, but I definitely wasn't as impressed as some people seem to be. But yeah, it does take a really long time to get into it.

  • I agree -- I looooved the whole series, and recently read it for the third time. :) This is one that I think will translate well to film, so I'm planning to see the movie and am super excited for it. (Sometimes I won't see a movie if I think it might spoil the book for me -- Time Traveler's Wife is the one that immediately springs to mind.)

I have such mixed feelings about TGWTDT. I actually liked the beginning of the book and found it not that hard to get into. I also really liked the historical/old mystery/family aspect of the story. What I had a hard time with was the violence. If you have a hard time with violence, especially toward women, I would say avoid the whole series. I think some would argue that Lisbeth (the main character) is an example of an anti-hero or anti-victim, but I'm not sure I agree. Again, I have very mixed feelings and kind of wish I'd never read the book or seen the movies.

  • The books are amazing! I'm actually looking forward to seeing the movie. I kinda hope Suzanne Collins write more about that "world." Maybe from a different districts POV during the 1st ever reaping? Or during the first revolt... Or ooh the start of Panem! I dunno... I just want more lol.

Maybe I won't try to read the series then. I actually kind of felt a little sick reading the rather mild violence that was in the Hunger Games. For some reason unless violence is in a horror movie setting it really gets to me.

  • I'm excited for the Hunger Games movie, too. I actually expect the movie to be much better than the book, which I almost never say.
  • Elle - Really? It's so rare when a movie is better than the book! I'm interested to see how they do with the outfits that are supposed to be over the top amazing.

Same. I feel like there is so much more she could write about, especially the world after book 3.

I am obsessed with THG. I read all 3 in 3 days when I had off lol. I was kind of disappointed in the end because it wrapped up quick, IMO, but I still loved it overall. I am so unbelievably excited about the movies now.

Has anyone looked up the cast? I waited until after I read the 1st book to see how different they were than I had imagined. Peeta was a shock, but he has really grown on me.

I didn't picture Peeta like the actor they cast either. It's something about his face that is off to me.

  • I wholeheartedly approve of Woody Harrelson as Haymitch and Stanley Tucci as Cesar.
  • I started reading HG right when it came out.  I was working at a bookstore and thought it looked really cool when we first put it on display.  So I had to wait a year inbetween each book, which drove me nuts.  Plus a year isn't even bad considering how long some of my other favourite authors wait before releasing a new book.

I'm honestly looking forward to the movie, but I don't have high hopes.  Some of the cast I love and others I really don't know about.  I hope they do a great job but I've been disappointed by book adaptations so many times.

In the first picture I saw of the actor playing Peeta, he had dark hair, so I didn't really see it then, but he looks good in the pictures on the official website.
  • I loved THG also! I hadn't even heard about it until recently on the boards, so I am happy I was clueless until after all the books were out. It would have drove me nuts having to wait, lol. I'm also pretty hopeful that the movie won't suck like many do. And yeah, Peeta's character was a shock to me too, but I think it'll be ok. I can't wait!!

  • I loved the books (just read them for the 2nd time) & I can't wait for the movie!  I don't like who they cast as Peeta or Gale.  Woody Harrelson is growing on me, I didn't picture Haymitch to look anything like him.  The girl they have playing Katniss I think is perfect, I really liked her in X-Men.  I'm sad though because I don't think I'll be able to go see it at midnight when it comes out (stupid, dumb work!).

  • The one I was most shocked about was the choice for Cinna. I just didn't see him in my mind like that. I love the rest of the casting though, especially Jennifer Lawerance.

  • I loved the books too and I'm really excited for the movie.  I agree that the story definitely superceeds the writing, but I can overlook that because the story was so engaging and creative (better than a beautifully written, terrible story).  I'm really excited for the movie though, judging from the trailer, it looks like a great representation of what I imagined in the book.

Has anyone read Suzanne Collin's earlier series 'Gregor the Overlander'?  I lent my MIL the HG books and when she finished, she realized that she was the same author as the Overlander books, so she checked the first two from her library out for me. (she works at a middle school library, the Overlander books are a few years 'younger' than HG and more science fiction-y, but she's read them to give recs to the kids).  I got about halfway through the first book, but I'm not as into it as I was the HG.  I don't know if it's because it's so young (I think it's like a 4th or 5th grade reading level) or because the story isn't as engaging, but either way, not nearly as good as the HG.

Same here.  MIL has to read a lot of younger books for the kids, so I'm sure she was already thinking of it on that level, which is why she enjoyed them.  But as an adult who reads mostly adult stuff, I just can't get into them.  Although I can definitely see why she recommends them to the kids because I think they'd be a great read at that age.
