Color Blind

Just heard a lovely statistic on the news tonight. Interracial marriage is at an all time high. As of 2010, 1 in 6 couples are interracial. Only 30 years prior, in 1980, about 3.2% of couples were interracial. Also, did you know that the same year the movie "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?", which is about a young interracial couple, premiered, was the same year the Supreme Court ruled against making interracial marriage illegal? Just goes to show that love truly is color blind! What's something new you learned today?

I had to read this twice before I realized what you were talking about. I thought you meant actually color blind, lol. I'm a bit slow today, lol. I think that's awesome. I would love to know the statistics for how many people still get harassed for it though. I think it's sad when people can't just let others be happy, especially in cases like this where it's obviously not hurting anyone.

I am torn on the words "color blind" though. I took a lot of classes on race in college and it has been drilled into me that "color blind" is not a positive thing because usually it means people are choosing to look beyond it (as if the color is something that needs to be ignored for it to be ok). Not relevant, but just something that came to mind.

  • Oh....do you want me to change the title of the thread? They called the story that on the news, so I thought it would be ok.

Oh, no, it doesn't offend me or anything. It was just a passing thought, so I thought I'd mention it, lol. You're fine.

  • I was just telling BF that I noticed three interracial couples in the small restaurant we ate dinner at on Valentines Day. It's crazy to think about the fact that 50 years ago, not only was it illegal, but they could have actually faced harassment and violence.

I hope soon, we'll look back and think how ridiculous it was that same sex couples couldn't go eat a romantic dinner without facing harassment or violence, much less have the right to get married.

<div>My family is from NorCal, and mom talks about how she had friends that were getting married as interracial couples when segregation was still going on in the South.</div><div>
</div><div>And I think that mixed babies are absolutely adorbz.  A girl I know from college married a black guy, and they just found out they're pregnant.  Seriously, that baby is going to be adorable.</div>

  • H and I are interracial, and we still get a lot of weird looks and even behind-the-back comments, especially from older generations.  we just ignore it.  and, actually, his culture makes a bigger deal out of it than mine...  they are always making comments about my race, or staring if we're in that part of town.  we just ignore it...  it's their problem, not ours.
