Not Engaged Yet

Theme Opinions please

sooo I have been looking around for themes because I want something different. There is no set date yet but definitely July 2012. It seems like summer weddings are all about beach/tropical themes, I want something different! So I really like the idea of a fairytale theme...the only thing is I don't want my guest to think it's childish..would you agree or disagree? I would appreciate feedback :)

Since this is NEY, I will presume you are NEY.

You do not need to think about a theme until you're engaged.

No one needs a year and a half to plan a wedding regardless of theme.

    Ditto Desert.

Also, weddings do not need themes. Themes are for children's birthday parties and proms.

Thanks for all the responses. I am engaged, new to this website so I think I might have posted this under the incorrect forum. I don't really have a budget my parent are paying for everything and I have about 270 to 300 people, that's all family and a few close friends. This is definitely going to take quite a bit of time to plan considering the amount of people and half of the people in my bridal party don't live in the US. I have foun some colors I like just been browsing around and everything for summer seems to be heading toward beach themes and that's just not me I like to be different.

Then I suggest browsing some wedding blogs or websites. There are lots of cute ideas on TK and I also love http://www.stylemepretty.com/ Google is your best friend for ideas! Look around and see what appeals to you, instead of focusing on a theme focus on what represents you and your FI.

You have over a year so you have lots of time! And congrats on your engagement!

You still have a budget. Make sure to find out what your parents are willing to spend. You don't want to bankrupt them.

Okay, if you're engaged, then it's fine to be planning your wedding. :)

I still don't think you need a theme, though. Try to find a style that suits you. Classic, modern, vintage, etc. Then try to find colors you like, flowers that work for your colors, and invitations that kind of set the mood.

I had a July wedding, and I wanted something simple but modern with a bit of sass. Not overly girly, b/c my H is kind of a manly man. So, I ended up with a dandelion motif that I used for the invitations, and our colors were navy and lime. There are lots of pics in my bio. Click on the link under my siggy pic.

Ditto Leia on your budget -- you need to talk hard numbers with your parents. Sometimes they don't realize how quickly things can add up. It really is best to set up at least a rough budget early on, even if your budget is $50k.

You can still post on this board if you want. You'll see we have plenty of NEY girls, as well as engageds and marrieds. You might just read this to get a better feel for the board:

Yeah you don't have to have a theme at all.

I love love love Tiffany's, so I am incorporating that into "my special day".  Ha ha, just kidding with the "my special day BS".

Also OP, if you really want to add in some sort of fairy tale theme that would be ok.  Just don't over do it to the point where your wedding is basically puking fairy tale.  Do it in an orderly fashioned.

Also Alfred Angelo does the princess theme dresses if you ever need inspiration.  Hope it helps.

I photographed a fairy- tale wedding in a beautiful butterfly garden in Northern Florida. The flowergirls wore the most beautiful handmade wings that clipped onto the back of their dresses. If you want a theme, have a theme. Your mind and ideas will really change within a year. If you want to keep things more uniformed or structured, try sticking with colors and let the ideas evolve! Good Luck!

    Zombie Fairy Tale!

But no, I don't think "Fairy Tale" is immature. It's fun, and the guests will probably think it's fun. The colors will be beautiful, and there's so much you can do with it!

I don't know how realistic this is, but it would be even better if you found a pretty clearing in the woods to hold the reception or ceremony. Of course, the guests would have to walk through the woods to get there.

what about doing kind of a woodland fairy type thing? Twinkle lights, candles, flower girls with wings. For centerpeices you could do something in a lantern like what Tinkerbelle sleeps in, maybe with a pretty wildflower that matches your colour? Or you could do centerpieces with some sort of branch. Then for colours stay away from beachy colours like blue, yellow sand etc, and don't bring in elements like seashells and what not. Green would be a good colour for a start, then maybe brown accents and a little bit of a bright colour if you want something to really pop?

Incorporating a theme is all about tasteful details and overarching unity.  Focus on the big things (such as the budget, guest list, and venue) first.  Then find your vendors, like photographer, videographer, caterer, florist, DJ/band.  After those are all done, you can start putting together the details.  Small touches are key for making a theme look tasteful and not tacky.

Google for ideas, and check out StyleMePretty.com and TheKnot.com to find inspiration.  If you come up with one or two pictures that you really love, it will help you build from those (either colors or concepts).

A good way to incorporate theme details would be escort cards, favors, the cake, and small touches like napkins or drink stirrers.
