A Toast for the D-Bag!

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Former President George W. Bush admitting in his memoirs and telling Matt Lauer that Kanye West's criticism of his response to Hurricane Katrina was "the worst moment of (his) presidency"...

Really, Mr. President??

Hurricane Katrina itself?? No??
9/11?? No??
The Iraq & Afghanistan Wars???? NO?!?
Might I suggest Kanye West calling you a racist?!?!? Oh, of course!!  Kanye ruined my life, too!!

There was nothing indirect about what Kanye said. Blurting out "George Bush doesn't care about black people" in the middle of a telethon for Katrina seems pretty direct to me. Even the co-host looked at Kayne like WTF man?

I can see how this would be a really bad moment in his presidency. This got a ton of media attention and at the time (before the Taylor swift incident) Kanye was really influential. Remember, the people who listen to Kanye West, and unfortunately look up to this guy, are the ones who voted Obama into office. And noooo I don't mean black people, I mean young people.

    Just to clarify...

SeaTea, you're right, the word 'indirect' was misplaced...

but my whole point is that of ALL the things that happened during his 8 years in office... the ONE thing he can say was the 'worst moment in his presidency' was someone else saying something negative about him... it couldnt possibly have been anything else??
  • edited December 2011
That was probably a super embarrassing time though. That story wouldn't die. There were comedy skits and all kinds of stuff from that. I bet more than anything else during his presidency that hurt his feelings.

No doubt it was embarrassing... but his whole presidency sparked comedy skits... there are youtube video montages of all the stupid things he ever said... it's pretty embarrassing when you can't articulate your thoughts as the President of the US...
and Kanye is NO angel... He's been the center of controversy, as well... and he admitted that the fallout from the Taylor Swift incident made him realize how Bush must have felt following his statement... and he is not proud of any of his actions... which, in no way, lets him off the hook, in my opinion...

I would have hoped that finding out that nearly 3,000 American lives had been lost on 9/11 would have been the worst moment. Or maybe finding out that there were not WMDs, or watching the stock market tumble in 2008...
I mean if Taylor Swift is adult enough to get over being insulted by Kanye, then I would think that a grown man could do it.

You don't see President Obama crying because Glenn Beck (who is way more crazy then Kayne) blatantly called him a racist.

An insult from Kanye being the worst moment of his presidency?

Yeah, he wasn't always great with words.
Atleast he didn't make a word up in that sentence.

Honestly, I can see how there were worse things in his presidency. I am just trying to see it from his point of view, and since I didn't read it so I don't know his reasoning. Maybe he defines that as the moment he realized public approval was dropping from the response to Katrina.

9/11 would have been a much more diplomatic response yeah, but it is how he feels.

Also, I tend to just feel really bad for politicians. Yes most of them are scum... but think about all the criticism they take and the hurtful things they hear everyday because no matter what they do someone will think they are doing a poor job. I also feel bad for refs at sports games when the entire stadium screams "ref you suck". Even thought they do suck and I participate in the screaming I feel bad for them.

No matter your thoughts on a politician's policies, IMO, it is just plain disrespectful to refer to the president as a "D-Bag". That is what is wrong with alot of people. There is no respect. He is a former president. That does not mean I agree with him but come on...show some respect.

And really, can we move on from bashing him??? There are alot of other more important things going on in the world.

Not that I don't think he is one... but the title of the Thread is actually a lyric from one of Kanye's songs and wasn't, by him or myself, a shot at Bush...

I'm actually much more intelligent and could think of a number of fitting adjectives that describe him, honestly...

As far as moving on from bashing him... it's too much fun... LOL Sorry, if you're offended...

That is so stupis. It is a pink whistle. it isnt like they wore a pink and white striped shirt. I hate power hungry individuals who really have limited authority but take it to the extreme.

I was heavily involved with my high school athletics (i was an athletic trainer for like very sport at one point or another) and I want to know who told on the refs. I only skimmed the story so maybe I missed it, but who was offended enough to report them? The athletic director? Coaches? None of those individuals at my high school would have looked twice at a pink whistle.

I didn't read that article, just linked the first one google offered that sounded correct.  I read it a week or so ago.
I just remember there was a director that said something along the lines of, "We have to punish the refs to show our youth that rules are there for a reason."

Yup, that's the lesson they need to know.

And it ticked me off to no end that the refs were donating a weekly paycheck, and then were going to lose two more paychecks because of the suspension.
Refs don't get paid jack either.  It's around what subs get paid.

THIS.  Really?  A personal insult is the worst moment of a very controversial presidency?  Even taking away whether or not you like Bush, I find it hard to believe that 9/11 wouldn't rank up there as the worst moment.

    Bakes,

I only give respect to those I feel deserve it. If you guys haven't noticed in the past few days I made it pretty apparent I am a Republican so George Bush bashing I will not.

I would insult Obama any day of the week... granted D-Bag isn't the term I would use... He had never done a single thing I feel worthy of my respect. You don't automatically get respect because you are voted into office, you have to earn it once you get there. For some Bush never earned their respect and for some Obama never will. I don't think we should judge anyone else's opinion or name calling honestly. If that is how she feels then why should she just not say it out loud? Seems silly.

He hasn't given up much. He has played more golf and taken more vacations than any president in our nation's history. There are working class men and women who have given up more to put a meal on the table than Obama. I just can't respect him simply because he got elected. I would not shake this man's hand if we were to meet.

Idk, when I start taking classes, I really want to go to a politics course.  I honestly don't understand a lot of it to be commenting on things.  So in my ignorance I choose not to bash either party.  I just know, not one President is perfect and it seems they never will be.

Oh gosh, I would never call ANY one perfect, or any party.

I think the most valuable thing I have learned as a poli sci major is to respect the other side's viewpoints and presence rather than their actors. I would never want all republicans all the time. Without a balance of power this country would be screwed. I am glad that since we have such a liberal president we have a conservative congress. If you take a 101 class it wont be too deep, it will be kind of like a high school course where you go over the branches of govt. If your professor is cool he/she will do current events.
