I'm stealing danimarie88's Idea - Birthday and Christmas ideas?

So I usually ask for one or two big-ish, frivolous things (aka fun stuff I can't afford for myself) for my birthday and Christmas (my birthday is exactly 2 weeks after Christmas FTR).

This year, however, I graduate in December and am planning on moving to Boston ASAP after my birthday. I'll be living with one of my best friends and her BF for a few weeks while I look for a job and hopefully the 3 of us will get an apartment by March.

Any ideas on things that I could ask for to start my life there? I already have a bunch of stuff I've gotten over the years from my dorm/apartment college experience - cooking stuff, microwave, blender, closet stuff, 2 different sized bedding sets (*sigh*). I obviously have no furniture (we're renting the funiture in my current apartment because my lease is only 6 months.

Any of you real live adults have suggestions for me? Would it make me a horrible person to ask for like...a matress or something?

Hmm, I'm not sure if you are a traveler or will be traveling for work, but a good set of luggage is something every "real live adult" (haha) should have. That's actually what I got for my college graduation. A decent mattress can be expensive, but if your parents are okay with getting you that for Graduation/Birthday, then I don't really see a problem with it.

Or maybe some good, key wardrobe pieces for your grown up work life. My college wardrobe did not involve tailored shirts, reasonable pumps, or suits, so my mom and I always have a "Back to school" date to go shopping for some nice work attire (though now I pay for my own clothes and it's just a mom/daughter day. But I'll admit, even at 29, sometimes she'll buy me something nice). Depending on your career, you may not need that many things (lots of companies are very casual now), but a few Ann Taylor Loft or Banana Republic items might be cool.

Honestly though, if you already have kitchen stuff, and you're not in the market for furniture, and you aren't asking for anything frivolous, there's really nothing I can think of that's a "necessity" you'd need to start off with, except money. But IMHO asking for money, even from your parents, in this particular situation is a bit...off. But if they want to give you some starting off money, then I wouldn't say no!

Let us know what you pick!

My birthday is exactly 2 weeks after xmas too! A pain isn't it! I've asked my parents for a dyson for xmas-that seems pretty sad - it used to be jewellry and make up now it's practical stuff. Good bed pillows are helpful and an expense you normally wouldn't pay out for yourself. I can't really think of anything necessary either you normally get things as you go - but anything that will make it feel like home whether it be a fleecey blanket for the sofa or nice smelling candles.

I'm two weeks before Christmas.  Well, 11 days, but same thing.

I usually just ask for a few things, and mom will pick up things I've mentioned I like, but there's usually a bit of money left over.  So, the day after Christmas mom will tell me how much I have, and we get whatever I need.  It gives me the freedom to pick out what I want and what I need and saves on what we have to return.

My suggestions would have been things that you already said you have from before. Do you have a really nice interview outfit? If you're going to be job hunting after your move, that would be a good thing to get.

My birthday is a week before Christmas (so many December babies around here!), and this year all I asked for as a joint Birthday/Christmas present is a flight home and back to school for the holidays. By the time I go home, it will have been 4 months since I left - the longest I've ever been away from my family! Awww... now I'm homesick. :(

My birthday is December 5th! There really are lots of us with December birthdays!

I always ask for very necessary things. Nice professional clothes, new tires for my car... things like that. My b-day and Christmas is combined a lot too.

Oh I love the idea of interview/work clothes. I have a ton of cardigans and a few pairs of pants (could use some more) but I could really use professional shoes especially.

    Thanks ladies! :)
