NWR/AW: Non-Newbiness

So, my FI and I's birthdays are two weeks apart, so his mom/my FMIL sent us a joint gift the other day....gift cards for IKEA to go buy this:

A REAL DINING TABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, let me just say, neither one of us has ever had a real dining table of our very own. My FI had an old card table that his old roommate took with her when she moved out, and we've been using a card table with a table cloth on it since we started living together. I've been secretly pining for a real dining room table, and apparently, my FMIL overheard me talking about it with my mom, and got us gift cards to go get it.

It conveniently matches this:

...which my mother has been hinting heavily at as being my future shower gift. In which I plan to put every gorgeous fish glass/dish I own on proud display.

Yes, I'm a nerd.

So, besides being an AW for the sake of bringing some degree of sanity to this board today, I do have a genuine question...

Does anyone have any advice on protecting the tabletop? It's stained wood, so it won't show much in terms of staining, but it wouldn't be hard to dent/gouge the wood. I'll be putting table clothes on it for most holidays/dinners and such, but I would love to be able to have it be bare wood sometimes too (it such a purty color).

I thought maybe putting a sheet of glass on top to protect, but do they even make them that big? If so, where on earth would I get one?

Anyone else have anything AW-worthy? Post away!

You can get glass cut to specific sizes. Where though I have to clue. We had to get it when my mom decided to go HULK once and flipped our coffee table, busting the glass inserts.
You could probably get some type of sealer to go on top. My dad put it on out dining room table but I think he used the clear coat he uses on cars.

We have the same dining table. My BF has had it since before we met. It's actually quite durable. We did accidentally scratch it a few months ago because of BF's super heavy poker set case that had some sort of sharp metal rivet on the bottom. I pulled it towards me to pick it up and saw the trail behind it...oh noes!

I think if you get some placemats and such, you'll be just fine. Are you getting the matching chairs, too?

I know my mom had pads to protect the table that she puts a tablecloth over.

You can definitely get glass that big, we have it on top of our wood baordroom tables at work. However, I believe it can be rather expensive. You may want to price it out before deciding on that option.

Unfortunately, I can't tell from the web what chairs match the table. These look like what we'd like to find:

But I think they're too dark against the table.

I like it. I don't know how you could protect it though.

OOoooo!! Love it!  It will be gorgeous!  I second the glass top.  My parents have one for their dining room table and it makes life very easy cleaning wise.  But moving it is a biotch.

The furniture looks great. I unfortunately have no suggestions for preventing scratches on the table, well other than don't put anything on there that will scratch it. Well, I don't think that is very feasible.

As a pp said, I think placemats would help a lot.

When do you get to obtain this table?

We're waiting until we have the money to get the chairs to go with it, so probably sometime next month.

oooo Oceana our coffee table and endtables are the same style from Ikea and they are the gorgeous!!  I love it!

How big is the table?  Glass for what size I'm thinking it is will be pretty pricey.  I had a friend that got a roll of the rug non-slip stuff (you know, the waffly spongy kind) and made a table runner.  Also, she took some vellum (clear) sheets and printed huge 8x11 B&W photos on them and then got it laminated at the bookstore where they had a large laminator.  You can see through it and the pics are adorable.

I'm really jealous b/c I've been secretly pining for a nice table and chairs as well... and that is just beautiful. I have never been to IKEA but the girls I work with are obsessed with all their stuff. The china cabinet just makes me think of everything I could put in it and what of mine I can sell like right now on craigslist to get it :)

You can get glass from any glass shop but I agree you might want to get it priced first. I hate getting super nice new stuff b/c I'm always afraid I'm going to ding it or something, then I'm super careful, too careful and it never fails, I somehow ding it/dent it/ something. Blah.

    Enjoy!

I love IKEA. FI and I furnished our apartment last year for less than 600 for a couch , dining table and 4 chairs , a bookshelf with all the different size squares , a 5 drawer dresser and 2 nightstands , and it all still looks awesome.

Wish I had some advice on protecting it though. /><

I'm sooooo way jealous!!  FI & I were just talking about the "must have" things we'll need for our move in the next couple of weeks.  Unfortunately it seems like we'll be doing the "college dorm room" thing and having a craigslist-type table and chairs for a while :(

Oh, I love that table and cabinet btw!!  IKEA rocks.
