What in the...

11 & 12 year old girls getting bikini waxes. WHAT?!?!?!?!

How can anyone possibly think this is ok?

How can a mother actually take her daughter for a bikini wax at the age of 11?

I definitely do not remember needing a bikini wax at all at that age or even close to it.

Yeah, that was on tv this morning.  RIDICULOUS!!  I definitely didn't need a wax at 12 years old, nor did I even know what the hell a bikini wax was!  What happened to letting kids be kids?!

That should be like a form of child abuse or something.

That shiit hurts. How does a little girl stand the pain of it?

Not to mention, I personally was SO shy when I was that young.  I would have so not been okay with stripping my bottoms off in front of a stranger.

Ok, I was pretty hairy for a girl when I was little, but I definitely never needed a bikini wax!  I think I was at least 15-16 before I started shaving anywhere near there! WTF?!?!?!?

I think an every now and then (ie: big birthdays, every two or three years, etc), a salon or spa day is fine for girls and tweens, but bikini waxes? I didn't even know what that was until I was in high school, and I sure as hell didn't want one! Every girl gets called ugly and is made fun of, no matter how beautiful they are. Instead of building them up with product, we should be teaching them how to present their God given beauty.

I work with a bunch of tweens and teens and many of the girls have beauty issues. When we go on weekend camps, I always challenge them not to wear make up. (It's not a rule, just a challenge) and to check in with me or a friend at the end of the weekend to see how they feel. The ones that do it usually feel more confident in their natural appearance.

    Gross.

I think I was 16 before I even knew what my "bikini area" was.

I'm sorry, there's a market for little girls to "really relax"??? If they are having a good childhood, they shouldn't need to relax!!!

    So creepy.

I admittedly haven't read the article, but I know my aunt was taking my cousin for bikini waxes around that age. She was on a competitive swim team and her skin didn't react well to shaving in that area. I can see where there might be appropriate circumstances...but definitely not for everyone.

WTF?  That is so freakin' creepy.

I wasn't even allowed to shave my legs until I was 13.

I never did anything to my bikini area until I was well into my 20s...

Me either.  I got in trouble when I tried to use my mom's razor before then (it was obvious since I cut the shiit out of my legs, lol).  I had to wait until 8th grade before my mom would let me, and even that was early, but because I had two older sisters and she couldn't really keep me from doing it anymore.  LOL.

I've <em>still</em> never had a bikini wax though...I'm scared of them. ha ha

That is so sad, can't kids just be kids for awhile.  They have the rest of their lives for bikini waxes... why do parent's let their kids do this????????????

    Do what the f*ck now??

We always got manicures and pedicures whenever Mama would go when we were kids, but bikini waxing? Like hell! I wasn't even allowed to shave my legs until I was 14!

  • edited December 2011
That's really weird.  I can understand the whole swim team situation but seriously?!  Girls that young shouldn't be getting bikini waxes done.  I also wasn't shaving my legs until around 14 or so and didn't go anywhere near my bikini area for years after.

I don't really get how kids that young need a spa day.  Mani/pedis I don't see a problem with if little girls want to get it done but that's just weird.

    Just... wow.

Mani/pedi on occasion, sure. Swim team situation, I can see why it could be justified. Anything other than that is ridiculous IMO. I'm almost 26 (2 more weeks until my birthday, squee! ok, maybe I'm almost 5...haha) and I STILL don't know how to ask for a bikini wax the right way at a spa, and as a result have only had it done once!

As a probably TMI side note, how do you ask for the different types of bikini wax? I'm sure there isn't just "bikini" and "Brazilian", but do the variations in between have names too?

<div>Hmm what variations do you mean?  I've only ever heard of bikini & brazilian.  Do you mean like a brazilian with a "landing strip"?  I've never done this, I feel like if I'm getting a brazilian the point is to take it all off, what do I want that little strip for?  I don't get it. </div>

I guess I mean, is there anything that's more off than bikini, but less than Brazillian? I'm not too sure how I feel about the 'back' etc with a Brazillian, but a bikini is jus the very outermost sides, right? I don't know... The whole process confuses and intimidates me a bit, lol

<div>You can get a brazilian & tell them you don't want the 'back' (you mean butt, right?) done or if you want the landing strip you can tell them that too, they usually ask if you want that or not.  The butt is the least painful LOL. </div><div>
</div><div>A bikini is just the outersides, yes.  It's so worth it IMO in the summer or when you're going away & plan to be in a bathing suit. I love not having to worry about anything down there. </div>

I remember my mom telling me that once I was 10, I could start shaving my legs. I remember going into the living room before I was about to take a bath and saying "Alright, momma, you promised!" Lol.

As far as for THAT kind of shaving, not until I was, like, at the very least 18. I'm not a swimsuit person, and up until this past summer, I didn't even wear shorts, I was so self-concious. I'll be 24 tomorrow, and I won't even hesitate to tell you I have no interest in a bikini wax, lol.

I started shaving my legs in 7th grade after a slumber party where all the girls were talking about shaving their legs. I was the only one that wasn't doing that yet. They weren't mean or weird about it, they were more like "Oh you should shave, your legs get so smooth feeling!"

    Interesting perspective....

So if your daughter needs to be shaving at that age...what's so different about waxing? I don't think I started shaving until I was 14 though.

But times are different- the age that girls are reaching puberty is getting much, much younger. My sister started when she was 11.
