Not Engaged Yet

I quit

Please help me find a bridesmaid dress... I love them dearly, but I can't please them to save my life. Here is their list of "must haves" (In my mind, this is a list of "it would be nice")

1. Pockets
2. Long
3. Rouching across the tummy
4. Comes in red
5. Can be cut off to make into a cocktail dress
6. Bling
7. Doesn't make them look like 20 year old bridesmaids
8. Around $200
9. Be able to try on before purchasing
10. A wintery fabric

Okay, so my must haves are long, red, and will look decent on sizes 2 to 26.

I have a headache and I've been to 7 or 8 stores already. I need to stop trying to please them all, I'm too nice. Please help!

Price (according to TK): Less than $150

ETA: Bling could come from a sparkly brooch that they can add somewhere on the dress. I had a similar style as a formal dress and added a brooch where the roucheing (sp?) gathered.

That's pretty low in the back to be a BM dress, especially of a must have is to not look like a 20 yr old BM. I rock it, but it is a looker of a dress.

I really like the first one peekaboo posted. It doesn't really fulfill the could be cut off or pockets requirements, but otherwise it seems pretty good. I agree with adding a brooch - it would be really pretty.

Why not just pick a color and designer and let them choose their own dresses? Put it on them to make a decision for themselves instead of trying to make a group of people with diverse tastes happy with one single dress?

That seems like a heck of a lot of requirements just for one dress! I don't know much about fashion, but I just imagine a long red dress with pockets + rouching + bling to be really intense.

This dress is long, has pockets and some rouching. I'm not a fan of the orange-ness, but I imagine it comes in other colors. The designer is Jim Hjelm. I found the picture on a blog, so there isn't a link to the exact dress but I'm sure it's searchable.

This one is great... though if it doesn't work for them, I'd have to say if your BMs are demanding pockets, that's going a little too far. If there were aspects you needed to cut out, I'd say pockets and cutting it off to be a cocktail dress. We've all had to buy dresses that we'd never wear again... they can donate them to HS girls that need prom dresses.

I was going to ask this, too. I think if you say pick brand x, color y, in whatever floor-length style you like. Also, you may have to specify fabric as part of color.

For example, I said pick any long Belsoie tiffany chiffon dress in teal.

If it's long and in the same fabric and color, they will totally go together.

I agree. This is what I did. I have three BMs: my 24 year old girly sister (size 12), my 27 year old lesbian sister (size 18), and my 29 year old girly-ish best friend (size 20 and pregnant). Because of their different tastes, sizes, and situations, I chose Alfred Angelo, satin, grape color, floor length, and then let them decide. They actually ended up picking somewhat similar dresses that all had ruching on the front and a corset back.

My aforementioned BF did the same for her wedding last fall. There were 4 of us, of varying sizes, and she chose the designer, color, fabric, and length. We ended up picking similar styles with asymmetric ruching and we got a lot of positive comments about how it was nice we got to choose our dress styles and that they all went together anyway because of the color, length, etc.

I'm the type of person who likes everything to be symmetric and equal and look the same, but I decided my BMs' happiness was more important to me. Honestly, even if I put my BMs in the exact same dress, they'd wouldn't look like triplets anyway because of different hair colors, sizes, etc.

OP, this way each BM can find a dress that has the requirements that are most important to her, as I imagine not every single one of your BMs feels everything on that list is a must must have!

FI and I really like when all the dresses match, so I'm trying to find something that everyone is okay with. I think I might have gotten a "I would wear that" from all my bridesmaids (so far) about the MoriLee 230 (the one peekaboo found).

I'm glad you found something that could work for everyone. My advice was going to be the same as Desert's- choosing the color and length and letting my BMs pick their own dresses really took a lot of stress out of my hands. So glad I did it that way- I'd do it again, no matter how OCD I am. It just wasn't worth the hassle.

any dress with a side seam can have pockets retrofitted quite easily. If they want the pockets (and who doesn't love a pocket?) they can have it done with their alterations.

I let my bridesmaids pick any dress they wanted from http://ariadress.com/DressThumbnails.htm

Since all the dresses come in the same colors and are made to order, you get the same dye lot. It made everyone really happy, and I think they all looked great! My only requirment was that they all be knee-length, but some of the full-length skirts have pockets!

So, I went to the store to look at that Mori Lee dress today, and I instead fell in love with this dress...

Why are so many dresses strapless? I'd feel like if I leaned forward I might flash Grandma Betty or something. And the YMCA would be totally OUT of the question.

But it's a pretty dress. And it seems to match most of the requirements. Nice job Smile
