Weekend Update

So how was your weekend? Do anything exciting?

Just this past Thursday and Friday I went to a leadership workshop for work.  It was so much fun, I really enjoyed getting to meet a lot of new people and discussing my job with others.  It made me do a lot of thinking about my job and where I want to take things in my current position.  In relation to that:

What are some job skills you wish you had or wish to improve?
How are you leadership skills?
How do you work in group dynamics?

Anniversary

Re: Weekend Update

  • My weekend was good! Friday I went to dinner & to see 'Ghost' (on Broadway) with my mom, grandmom, aunt, & cousin. The show was fantastic! Saturday I was mostly lazy. My bff came over & we lounged & watched the Olympics all day. I went for a mani/pedi that night.

Yesterday I got my hair & makeup done (also booked the MUA for my wedding on the spot) & then we had our engagement pics FINALLY! We had such a fun time & I'm feeling a lot better about my photographer. She said she'll get them back to us in about 2 weeks so now I put on the patience pants & play the waiting game.

Nothing exciting to report here (that I didn't already on Friday). I fixed a major scheduling snafu so I'll be able to race and get my scuba cert in the next two weeks before my vacation. Huge relief there. :)

My job is pretty awesome. Though, I wish I had better focus. I'd probably get a lot more done. Not that my job necessarily encourages anything beyond minimum standards. My leadership skills used to be pretty good, but my current job is very solitary. Which is awesome in some ways, because I can do things on my own time without dealing with others. But, it means my group work skills are nil. I hate working with others. I do better when I can just do it on my own. I know it's done and I know it done to my definition of right.

  • My weekend was a bit of a fail, diet-wise (pizza on Friday and Chinese on Sunday...ugh).  Took care of my dad though and made him a nice supper on Saturday evening.  Getting my butt back on track today.

The leadership workshop sounds like fun.  I wish we had stuff like that where I work.

What are some job skills you wish you had or wish to improve?
-- />I need to work on networking more.

    How are you leadership skills?
-- />Pretty good, I'd say.  I'm nice but I don't get walked over and any team I'm on I always ensure that the job gets done.

How do you work in group dynamics?
-- />Also pretty good...though I tend to take over for people if they aren't doing what I need them to do if we are under a severe time crunch (rather than explain what other people need to do/delegate).  I could work on that.

  • rdr- glad to hear you booked your MUA and that the engagement shots went well.  I can't wait to see the pics!
I wanted to see Ghost but it's closing next month and there just isn't enough time.  BF & I really want to see Book of Mormon, tickets are so expensive though.

  • Hey guys!!

I didn't too too much exciting this weekend. We went out to eat on Friday night at this nice Italian place in the city. I was being totally grouchy because I was "having an ugly day", and absolutely hated how I looked. BF thought he had done something wrong, so spent the whole drive into the city trying to cheer me up. He wouldn't believe me when I said it was just "a girl thing". Oh well.

Saturday night we went out to Long Island for my little cousin's high school graduation party. It was at this nice restaurant right on the water and there was lots of food and free drinks! I ate the best coconut shrimp I have ever tasted. Also - my 23y.o. sister came over to BF and I and said "You guys are gonna have the coolest babies. They're gonna, like, come out with sunglasses on. That's how cool they'll be." I didn't even know what to say, but to BF's credit, he just laughed and said "We'll absolutely have the coolest babies ever. Just wait til you see theiur Xbox skills." My stupid sister.

My grandpa tried dancing to Lady Gaga. Wish I had it on video!

Today I'm cutting out of work a few hours early "Dentist appointment" to go upstate and go out on a lake on BF's old roommate's boat. I'm excited about the boat, but I'm even more excited about possible meeting his 2 month old baby girl! This baby was basically the reason BF and I moved in together 10 months ago (his roommate knocked up his GF, so he was moving out and thus BF needed a new place, etc.) - so I feel like I need to thank her...

  • I stayed up way too late last night playing poker with some friends.  I didn't get to sleep until 2 AM.  I am too old for that.

I also went mountain biking yesterday...  or, rather, I tried to go mountain biking yesterday, but it was so damn hot I couldn't make it far.

    So, yeah, I'm exhausted today.
  • We just got home from vacation (I came home sick, so I'm not thrilled about that, haha)

I have an interview tomorrow.  They called Sunday night and I have to prepare a 20 minute presentation.  So far so good, although it's closer to 16 minutes than 20 minutes.

Oh, and I've been watching the Olympics ALL weekend long.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • Congrats on the wedding check, rdr.

Our weekend was relatively quiet.  Saturday we went to the Red Hot Art Festival with the kiddo, then back at home she wiped the board with us at Monopoly.  Sunday, kiddo was with her dad, and FI and I went to the cheap theater, where they were screening Back to the Future.  Then, we went on a walk and got a case for the Kindle Touch my dad is bringing for me when he visits this coming weekend!  YAY!

As for job skills, I would love to work on leadership skills.  The only time I have been in leadership roles is with teaching or in volunteer settings.  Not too much paid experience leading teams of my peers.  Also, there is some software I wish I had more experience with to be marketable.

I think I work cooperatively in groups, but step up if it seems like there is something not being addressed/deadline is getting close.

  • I'm sorry you are having a bad day Tarra. I hope it gets better.

    Anniversary

  • Hugs, Tarra.  I'm sure your H means well.  I hope the rest of your day goes better.
  • Tarra- that dude needs to pull his head out of his arse.  I will then replace said head with my foot for good measure.  WTH kind of jerk is that!  Funny thing about guys (and gals) like that, however, is that karma has a way of coming around to those people...his time will come.  Keep your head up, Tarra.

I'm sorry about the mood swings and sorry to hear about the fibroid.  You are entitled to some good things going your way...sending you lots of T&P for those good things coming your way sooner rather than later.

[QUOTE]I just saw him and he tried to be all like I heard what happened, it'll happen for you, don't worry. I told him he is the last person I want to talk to and I was really hurt by what he said to me. He then tried to explain it away and I was like "please don't talk to me, I am serious, I am about to start crying" and then he made it all about his feelings and how he "can't say nothing right to anyone." he wanted to say he was joking, but who jokes with a pregnant woman about getting their husband a photograph so he can show people how nice she looked before she got fat and unrecognizable? Shenanigans. And saying the most trite things possible to an offended, angry, grieving woman is the worst thing I can think of. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, but you made me miserable for two days!

Good for you, Tarra.  He's an idiot who clearly tries to deflect his idiocy by trying to turn it around and make it all about how he is the victim.  Good Lord, my ex did that all the time.  I hate people like that...probably why the ex is an ex, eh?  Then again, I was the idiot who dated him for 3 years.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" />

Anyway, I'm proud of you for not putting up with that crap but still standing up for yourself in a dignified way.
  • Saturday I woke up at 7:30 am to register my car (in and out in 30 minutes!  wow!).  BF and I went to breakfast... then he had to work, so I went to Target with a friend, spent too much money and tried to get a tan by the pool.  Sunday I had an awful headache all day, but managed to go to breakfast with BF again before he went to work.  The rest of the day was all about the Olympics and napping.
