Update: Breast Milk Ice Cream

Re: Update: Breast Milk Ice Cream

Well, "the best way to deal with" it is to test it under similar standards as all other food. I understand that it needs to be approved- you're selling it for people to eat. I don't really know much about Britain's health laws or how they test and approve their food. I know it's different from the US in some ways.

Ew, I heard about PETA trying to get Ben and Jerry's to consider using breast milk...

    okay, here, found it...

My mom didn't breast feed me when I was a baby and I certainly don't want to be breast fed by a bunch of strange women when I'm an adult, either. But thanks.

For the record, I would totally eat breastmilk ice cream. It's not any more odd than goat cheese or having an cafe au lait.

    Agreed, Hetshup.

I heard the news about the flavor being suspended last night, too.

To me, it's a little weird and gross to drink someone else's milk, unless you're a baby. But that's just me, my personal opinion/reaction, and not in any way a judgement about what other people should or shouldn't do. As long as both the milk-giver/seller is cool, and the person consuming it is cool, I'm cool. And again...I freely admit that this is a gut-level thing and not based on logic.

To be clear, I don't think it would be so weird to me if it were, say, my husband drinking or tasting my own. It's purely a gross-out factor thing. I feel exactly the same way about coming into contact with any other bodily fluid of someone I don't know intimately. Even if I'm assured it's free of disease, etc., that's just not my bag.

I don't want to reopen the previous discussion, but I do understand why the thought of it, on a visceral, totally mindless level, would gross you out.  It's unusual (at least in this country) for people over the age of 1 year to consume human breastmilk.  Things that are unusual often seem gross.

Like I said before, I think all milk is disgusting unless made into some other dairy product.  So breast milk doesn't really affect me any more than cow's milk.

For me, I don't think it's because it's unusual so much as it's another person's bodily fluid. I'll try just about anything.

    Right, but...

If you had never stopped breastfeeding (I'm not sure whether you were or not, just be hypothetical with me), you would probably never have formed the aversion to that specific bodily fluid.  If drinking breastmilk was normal to you at the time you started to gain perception of the world around you, you would probably still not have a problem with it.

There are a lot of things we do that might seem weird or gross to anyone who wasn't used to it.

Nope, I'm going to be the odd man out here and say I really don't want to drink or eat any fluids that come from another human being. The thing is, there might be benefits to it if you are a baby and it's your own mother. But as an adult, it's purely a taste thing, so to me it makes as much sense as drinking a stranger's blood because it tastes good. Breast milk is natural for babies. We're not babies.

Yep.  Humans are the only species on the planet that continue to consume milk (of any kind) after infanthood.  So if you use the "we're not babies" argument, you can't drink cow's milk either.

    lolwut?

Cow milk still has some nutritional value for adults. Breast milk does not in the same way.

Humans consume milk after adulthood because we have the knowledge of it's nutritional benefits and technology to obtain it so we don't have to drink it directly from the source. Animals haven't figured that one out, yet.

I think you're being a little contradictory, SF.  You say that you wouldn't try breast milk because it's not natural for adults to drink it, but you also suggest that we can drink cow's milk, even though it's unnatural, because it's good for us?  Which is it?

Without even mentioning the fact that there's a lot of debate about whether cow's milk is indeed healthy for adults, I'm confused about why you think breast milk shouldn't be?  It has a lot of essential amino acids, unsaturated fats, iron, vitamin c, etc.

I'm just trying to understand your logic, not be rude.

</div><div>Well, if I were a lambbie, sheep milk (dairy) would be natural for me. If I were a kid (goat) goat milk would be natural for me. If I were a kitten, kitty milk would be natural for me. The point is, all dairy, whether cow/goat/sheep is natural for babies. But not natural for adults. So I don't understand why human milk is any more gross than those milks. </div><div>
</div><div>The main thing that I do get, human milk should be cost prohibitive for most people considering there's no economy of scale production of milk. Unless you are Mutley, I've seen pics of sumo baby. </div>

I wouldn't drink/eat it because of the disease factor. Even with testing and pasteurization things can slip by, so there is a risk present there that isn't with other species' milk.

I drink soymilk, too. It agrees with my belly, unlike dairy. But I do love me some cheese and ice cream. In moderation and with Tums. Embarassed

How about coconut milk ice cream? That crap is GOOD. I ate some mango coconut milk ice cream DH got me at Whole Foods (aka Disney World for vegetarians) and I was in LOVE. With the ice cream. He's okay too, though. Wink

This may be a dumb question, but how much does coconut milk taste like coconut?  I mean, is it overpowering, or it more like a subtle coconutiness?

Because I'm not often crazy about coconut, but sometimes, mixed with other flavors, I like it ok.  The coconut mango ice cream sounds like it could be good.
  • edited December 2011
I don't find that it's super-coconutty. I've used coconut milk in plenty of recipes and it's usually sweet but not too overpowering.

However, I tried the chocolate coconut milk ice cream and didn't like it. Mango YES. So I think you still have to consider how well it meshes with the flavors of everything else. Unlike soymilk, which I find replaces the flavor of dairy milk very easily... especially since I've been drinking it for years now.
